Chapter 113 A Mother’s Blade
Lucifer stood at the hill’s edge, cape snapping behind him as the wind roared across the open land. Below, Andrew and Luke tore across the field, their horses pounding the earth with furious rhythm. Dust curled around their hooves, rising like ghosts chasing them. Lucifer watched it all with a slow, curling smile the smile of someone who already knew how the story would end.
Andrew rode with the reckless confidence of youth, unaware that death galloped just behind him… wearing the face that once kissed his forehead goodnight.
Vampires were born hungry for blood, for power, for thrones. Seraphine was no exception. Her ambition clung to her like a second skin. Lucifer knew she would shed anything, anyone, to get what she wanted. Even the child she once rocked to sleep.
Boots brushed against gravel behind him. Morgana stepped forward, keeping her distance as if the air around Lucifer burned.
“Master… everything is ready. Seraphine will strike soon.”
Lucifer didn’t spare her a glance. His gaze stayed glued to the riders below, pupils narrowing with anticipation.
“Good. I’m curious to see my brother’s face when he realizes his perfect little family was nothing but a fragile illusion.”
Morgana hesitated, the wind tugging at her cloak.
“Master…”
Lucifer raised a brow, still not looking at her. “Speak.”
“You raised Andrew,” she whispered. The words trembled, though she tried to hide it. “You trained him… fed him… protected him, even though you didn’t love him. Just as you did Luke. And Selena. Yet you still want him dead? He’s innocent.”
Lucifer’s smile deepened, though no warmth reached his eyes.
“A demigod should never have been allowed to exist. A creature born of an angel and a vampire is an insult to both realms. And Andrew…” He exhaled, the sound almost amused. “…is the son of Michael. The Archangel of War. Tell me, Morgana what do you think my father will do when he discovers that Michael created something so forbidden?”
Morgana swallowed hard and looked away, unable to answer.
A low rumble trembled across the field. Then the thunder of a single horse cut through the chaos.
On the far end of the plain, a rider burst into view Seraphine. Her hair whipped like black flames, her eyes locked on her son with a focus that had nothing motherly in it. There was hunger in that gaze. Determination. Madness.
Lucifer leaned forward on the hill, a spark of wicked delight lighting his expression.
Andrew sensed something the shift in wind, the tremor underhoof but he turned too late.
Seraphine closed the distance in a heartbeat.
Her blade flashed.
The steel buried itself between Andrew’s shoulders, sliding in with a sickening, wet sound. His scream ripped through the wind, sharp and raw, echoing across the field before the air swallowed it.
His body sagged, fingers slipping from the reins. Then he toppled sideways off the horse, hitting the ground with the limp, empty heaviness of a broken doll.
Lucifer’s laughter spilled across the open field, low and cold, rolling over the land like a storm that had finally found its home. The sound made the horses below rear, made the wind itself hesitate, as if nature feared what it had just witnessed.
“Take Luke and Selena away from here,” he said without looking back. His voice was smooth, almost bored. “I’ll be having visitors soon.”
Morgana bowed once, her face pale in the gathering darkness, and slipped into the shadows, swallowed by the storm.
Above them, the sky twisted. Clouds thickened, curling inward like something alive. The air grew heavy too heavy until every breath felt like swallowing thunder. A jagged bolt split the sky, lighting the world in a stark flash.
Lucifer descended the hill with slow, deliberate steps. Rain began to fall, soft at first, then harder, drumming against the earth in angry bursts. Water soaked into the dirt, mixing with the blood that slowly pooled beneath Andrew.
The boy lay still, his skin pale under the stormy sky. His chest rose only slightly soft, fragile breaths that sounded like a dying candle flickering for its last bit of air.
Seraphine knelt beside him, her hands limp at her sides. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t reaching for him. She trembled in a way that had nothing to do with grief. It was fear raw, bone-deep fear of the monster standing behind her.
“You don’t want to witness what comes next,” Lucifer murmured, his tone gentle in the way a knife could be gentle while slicing through skin.
Seraphine shook her head quickly, droplets of rain flying from her hair. Lucifer flicked his wrist, and she vanished snuffed out like a candle flame.
Thunder cracked again, closer this time, vibrating through the ground. The rain thickened until it fell in sheets, blurring the world, drowning the field in silver.
And then the wind shifted.
Something ancient pressed into the air behind him bitter, cold, and furious, as if the world itself held its breath. Power rippled across the grass, bending it toward the figure that had not yet spoken.
“I’ve been expecting you, sister,” Lucifer said, not bothering to turn. His voice carried calm amusement, like he had been waiting for this moment.
A second flash of lightning tore open the sky.
Dorcas emerged from the storm, each step cracking the ground beneath her. Lightning danced along her fingers, alive and trembling, hungry for destruction. Her eyes burned through the rain as she stared at her brother.
“Lucifer,” she breathed, and her voice shook not with fear, but with barely-contained wrath. “What have you done?”
Another bolt of thunder slammed into the earth, making it tremble beneath their feet.
