Chapter 36 I met the devil’s mother but she's mad
Chapter 36
Elena pov
Just a few meters away from the house and something flew in my direction. I flinched, screaming and running back but Kai’s grip around my hands was the one that held me back.
He stared at me, and I felt relieved. The fears which gnawed on my nerves fleeing.
There's something about Kai’s gaze that I can't lay my hands on or get off my head.
No matter how troubled I seemed to be, his gaze seemed to be the only antidote to my troubles.
It soothes all the pain leaving me with nothing but peace.
A faint smile from him reinstated my failed morale and took me out of my petrified state.
We continued to walk towards a wooden house with faint light flickering from the inside.
Immediately, we stepped foot onto the pavement and I'm about to take another step, Kai snapped.
“S-stop,” Kai whispered urgently, but it was too late—my foot had already touched the pavement.
In a flash, he spun me around. We stumbled, and I almost bit his jaw. My cheeks flamed red.
“What… was that?” I asked, looking away.
Kai’s gaze followed mine to the pillar where blades were embedded. “Traps. I set them around the house.”
“Traps?” I stammered.
“You’ll understand once we’re inside,” he said, helping me to my feet.
His hands slipped away from mine and I watched him with a gaping mouth as he trudged forth and ran his hands over the outer wall.
White fluorescent Light came flickering on, and something slid on the wall, exposing a keypad lock.
A beeping sound emanated from the keypad as Kai pressed the keys.
Then the door opened, and he gestured for me to come in.
My mouth dropped open in shock at the interior design, and modern equipment. Truly, a book shouldn't be judged by its cover.
“This… this is incredible,” I whispered, taking in the sleek furniture and modern tech. “It’s nothing like the outside. How did you—?”
He gave a faint smile. “I’m glad it impresses you. But that’s not why I brought you here.”
“Then… why?” I asked, biting my lip.
I promised not to ask him and now I'm eating my words?
“Follow me,” he said, motioning down the hallway.
Having followed him into a room, my breath hitched in my throat as I saw a woman on the bed, sleeping.
What sort of mystery is this? What is a woman doing in this house?
An IV stand where the drip hung was standing beside the woman and a tray where syringes and bottles of medicine lay sat pretty on the side table.
When I turned to ask him a question, I noticed a creak from his left, the door opened exposing a plump woman with her packed bun.
The woman flinched and almost knelt to greet Kai.
“Good day, sir.”
“Leave us,” Kai said coldly.
The woman swallowed and quietly left.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Kai’s broken voice erupted in the air and my heart shook with fear.
I thought men don't cry. I thought they were made of the strongest clay but here is Kai, sobbing.
“Kai?” I called in a perplexed tone.
“This is my weakness, Elena. I thought you should know this.” he pointed towards the woman on the bed “my mother.”
He once told me about his mother but...
“Ssh…” I shushed him, tapping my hands on his shoulder and dragging him to my side to comfort him. “It's okay. She will be fine.”
“Her condition… keeps worsening—” His words cut off as his mother twitched in her sleep and suddenly grabbed a vase from the side table.
“Don’t kill my son! Please, Lara! I’ll leave your husband, just don’t hurt him!” she cried, swinging it toward me.
I screamed, and Kai leapt in front of me. The vase shattered against him. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, holding him tight.
The woman looked in our direction and there was a puzzled look that settled on her face.
Her voice trembled. “Son?” A deep line etched into her face. “Take that woman away from me. She's evil!”
Panic surged through my heart. Was she talking about me? She hadn't even seen me before and this was my first time meeting with her.
I felt my heart shatter at her words. It makes me feel like an unlikable character.
“That woman said I'm mad but I'm not. She beats me and injects me!” Kai’s mother shouted, and I presumed she was talking about the woman earlier who had left.
I presumed the woman Kai had asked to leave was either a nurse or a psychiatrist.
Kai’s mother tore her clothes. Blew mucus from her nose into her palm and began to eat. “I’m not mad! I’m okay.”
I felt Kai tense beneath my touch. “You can wait outside if you wish,” he suggested.
My voice was sharp and swift. “No. I can help.”
“She's mad! She may hurt you if you get close to her.” Kai tried to persuade me, but I was already moving toward his mother.
I flashed a warm smile at her, and she also returned my smile.
Just when I thought I had calmed her, Kai’s mother yanked my hair. “You barren! Leave my son alone!”
I struggled hard to let go of her grip around my hair but her strength was unmatched for me.
Kai stepped in to push her mother away from me. His actions earned him a slap from his mother.
“Horgan! You fool are you going to let that witch kill our son?” she bellowed, shaking Kai.
“Mother it's me Kai, and she's Elena and not Lara,” Kai said.
Her mother’s grip around his shoulders dropped and she collapsed to the bed sleeping peacefully as if she was not the one who had just talked some moments ago.

We stepped out and the first thing Kai did was to challenge the woman from earlier on.
“Were you beating and calling her mad?” Kai gripped the woman by her throat.
The woman shook her head. “No…” she struggled to speak.
Kai let go of his hands around her neck. “I didn't hurt her. She's lying.”
Kai spat and stormed out of the house.
I stared at the woman intently and she looked away. “I swear that I never hurt her.”
“It's okay,” I mumbled as I walked away.
“She’d hurt her!” Kai yelled in the air as I tried to persuade him.
“Okay, I suggest you check through the cameras to know if she's hurting your mother or not.”I stared at him.
“Unfortunately, there's no camera. I didn't fix that in her room because of some reasons known to me.”
“Why?” The words slipped out of my mouth.
“I’ll be tempted to watch and it's no joy watching your mother misbehaving,” he said.
There was silence.
“But, you have to do something. Your mother may be unstable but what if she's telling the truth?”
