Chapter 128 Three Days

Chapter 128 Three Days
The communication sat on Nadia's device for four minutes before she showed it to Damian.

Not because she was concealing it. Because she needed four minutes to read it three times, to authenticate its routing against the network maps they had been building for months, and to arrive at a level of confidence about what it was before introducing it into the operational space they shared. She had learned, through the sustained experience of a situation in which every piece of incoming information carried the possibility of being exactly what it appeared to be or precisely the opposite, that the four minutes spent confirming were always worth more than the four minutes saved by reacting immediately.

The routing was unusual. Not the standard channels used by their legal team or the forensic analyst or any of the operational contacts that fed into the operations room's regular information flow. It had come through a personal address, one that was not publicly associated with her, which narrowed the field of people who could have sent it to those with access to information about her that went beyond the professional surface of her current position.

The content was brief.

It said: I know what is planned for the forum. Meet me before it happens.

Nadia showed it to Damian at the four-minute mark.

He read it. Read it again. Then looked at her with the expression of someone assessing two possibilities simultaneously, the possibility that it was genuine and the possibility that it was a sophisticated attempt to draw them into a controlled meeting under the guise of offered intelligence.

"The credential detail," he said.

"Is accurate and is not publicly available," Nadia confirmed. "Which means either the sender has access to our private investigation materials, which suggests a compromise we have not identified, or the sender has independent knowledge of the boundary amendment documentation, which narrows the field significantly."

Damian looked at the routing metadata on his device. "The channel it came through," he said. "It is adjacent to the infrastructure we mapped around Clifford Eze's consultancy. Not identical. Adjacent."

Nadia absorbed that. "Eze," she said.

"Or someone connected to him," Damian replied carefully. "Who has decided, for reasons we do not yet understand, that providing us with advance intelligence about the forum serves their interest more than withholding it."

They spent the remainder of the morning working through the authentication of the communication with the forensic analyst, pulling every available piece of metadata and cross-referencing it against the network maps and the communication patterns they had documented over months of investigation. The process was thorough and it was slow and it produced, by early afternoon, a confidence level that was not absolute but was high enough to act on carefully.

The communication was almost certainly genuine. The sender was almost certainly operating from within or adjacent to Eze's network. And the offer it contained, advance intelligence about what was planned for the forum in exchange for a meeting, was almost certainly motivated by something the sender wanted that they had not yet disclosed.

Nadia responded with a single line proposing terms for the meeting, time, location, conditions, that protected their position without communicating the level of caution they were exercising in the response. The reply came within twenty minutes, accepting the terms with a single modification to the location that moved it to a venue slightly further from Blackwood's operational geography, a modification that was itself a form of communication about the sender's desire for distance from the institutional weight of the Blackwood environment.

They confirmed the meeting for the following morning.

The three days between that confirmation and the forum became the most concentrated period of preparation either of them had experienced, which was a significant statement given everything the preceding months had contained. They worked in parallel streams simultaneously, the forum counter-strategy continuing to develop on one track while the meeting preparation ran on another and the ongoing governance and legal work maintained its momentum on a third.

Nadia moved between the streams with the focused efficiency of someone who had learned, through sustained practice under sustained pressure, to hold multiple complex threads without losing the specificity of any of them. She had become, over the months of the situation, something she had not been when she walked into Blackwood Tower with nothing but desperation and the hope that a powerful man might listen. She had become someone who could stand at the center of a complex and dangerous situation and operate within it with the clarity of someone who understood not just the individual pieces but the logic connecting them.

Damian noticed. She knew he noticed because the quality of his attention toward her had changed in ways that were not dramatic but were consistent and cumulative, the attentiveness of someone who was watching a person they already valued become something more than they had understood was possible.

On the second day of the three, Osei arrived.

Not announced. Not with the formal advance communication that board-level contact typically required. He arrived at the tower in the early afternoon and asked for Nadia specifically, which was itself a communication about where he understood the center of gravity to currently reside within the partnership he was choosing to trust.

He brought documentation.

The proxy challenge had advanced further than their most optimistic projection had anticipated. The legal enforceability argument around clause fourteen had found a sympathetic ear in the preliminary review process, and the reviewing authority had issued a provisional finding that the proxy provision as constructed did not meet the disclosure requirements for a power of attorney instrument under the company's constitutional documents.

Provisional. Not final. But sufficient to suspend the proxy's operational validity pending the completion of the formal review process.

Nadia read the provisional finding and felt the shareholder mathematics shift in real time. With Osei's proxy suspended, Selena's removal threshold dropped below the required majority. Not permanently. Not conclusively. But for the period covering the forum and its immediate aftermath, the specific window in which the opposition's strategy was designed to execute, the numbers no longer supported what Selena had been building toward for four years.

She looked at Damian across the table where they had been working. He looked at her. Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then Damian looked at Osei. "Thank you," he said. Simply and completely.

Osei nodded once with the manner of someone who had made a decision they were at peace with and required no elaboration of that peace from anyone else.

On the evening of the third day, as the forum's morning approached with the particular imminence of something that could no longer be prepared for and could only be entered, a final piece of intelligence arrived through the monitoring system that changed the quality of the night entirely.

Someone within their own preparation team had made an outgoing communication to an external address. The address resolved, through two routing layers, to a node within Victor's intelligence infrastructure.

The element of surprise they had been counting on was gone.
