Chapter 269
Chapter 269
Everyone followed Elisha through the bar's pool area, then they stopped in front of an unremarkable little door.
The small door wasn't really noticeable in the dimly lit bar, but because there was a fluorescent sticker right in the center of the door panel, everyone immediately saw something unusual about it.
Daryl was about to ask why they'd stopped when he heard a voice from the side of the door.
"Who?"
He looked over and only then noticed a burly Black man standing beside the door.
Actually, he couldn't really see how tall the guy was, since the lighting here was even worse than in the middle of the dance floor - almost no light reached this spot.
He could only guess the man's height by the occasional flash of white teeth when he spoke.
"They're here to see Emory." Elisha raised his chin and jerked his head backward.
Daryl could sense the tall Black man's gaze sweep over them, then heard that deep voice again.
"Emory? Them?"
Daniel understood the situation better than Daryl, so he handled the talking.
"Rocco sent us," Daniel mentioned Rocco again.
After Daniel brought up Rocco, Daryl could clearly feel the man by the door's attitude soften instantly.
"Rocco." He laughed first, his tone like he was remembering an old friend.
The small door quickly opened.
Inside was a long corridor. As soon as they walked in, Daryl frowned.
That side must have been connected to somewhere else, bringing in heavy cold air. His suit blocked most of it, but his exposed face met the cold air directly.
Daryl felt his facial skin tighten. Looking at Daniel beside him, there was almost no change in his expression, but looking closely, you could see his brow furrow.
"Pretty cold," Daryl said.
As soon as he opened his mouth, white breath puffed out.
Daniel glanced at him, his words wrapped in white breath, "It's fine, this is normal for them."
"What?" Daryl didn't understand.
But Daniel had no intention of explaining. He just patted Daryl's shoulder lightly, then gestured for Daryl to keep moving forward.
Daryl looked around - the people around him all seemed used to this temperature, so he could only swallow his questions, keep his mouth shut, and follow Daniel.
He followed the group deeper inside. He thought they'd enter another room, but unexpectedly, they went straight into another building.
The first floor of this building was completely open, the space looked large but also empty, because there wasn't much equipment here - just cooling units placed in the four corners of the first floor.
Obviously, this bone-chilling cold was caused by these four cooling units.
However, Daryl looked up at the ceiling, and sure enough, there were temperature control system pipes above.
He found it strange - why would this building have so many cooling units?
"Hey! What are you looking at!"
In the distance, someone saw Daryl's movement and shouted at him.
Daryl looked over and saw a Black man with a mean face yelling at him.
He frowned. The next second, Daniel pressed his head to turn away. He clicked his tongue, about to speak, when he heard Daniel's voice in his ear.
"Don't look around if you don't want to die."
Daniel's voice was serious, basically squeezed out through his teeth.
Daryl frowned, feeling vaguely uneasy.
"This is our boss, show some respect." After saying this, Daniel raised his head and said coldly to the man who had just spoken rudely.
As Daniel's words landed, the people following him drew their guns and chambered rounds.
The crisp sound of chambering echoed especially sharply in the empty hall.
"Hey!" Someone immediately stepped forward with raised hands, "Sir, don't be like this, we're friends, friends."
Others half-circled the earlier man and pushed him back.
The dispute was stopped through the mediation of several people.
Daniel and his group went up the stairs and soon reached the third floor.
The temperature on the third floor was even lower than downstairs.
Someone brought thick coats for Daniel and the others.
Daryl frowned, somewhat disgusted, but it was really cold here. His autumn suit couldn't block the cold at all, so, although disgusted, he still decided to put on this padded jacket that clearly many people had worn before.
As soon as the padded jacket was shaken out, Daryl smelled an indescribable stench.
That smell was like dead maggots mixed with horse manure.
His nose instantly wrinkled.
He couldn't help it - he dry heaved.
Then he threw the padded jacket back.
"I'm not wearing it."
He pressed his lips together and said immediately without any hesitation.
Daniel didn't wear the padded jacket either. He hadn't even taken the one-handed to him from the start.
Daniel wasn't surprised by Daryl's reaction.
He turned and said to Elisha, who was watching the show, "Have your boss bring over a brand new scarf. Our boss isn't like those lowlifes you've dealt with before."
Elisha didn't say much and turned to find someone.
Their group passed through another corridor with glass partitions on both sides - glass rooms.
Daryl only glanced once before immediately looking away, his pupils shaking and his expression turning serious.
"You noticed?" Beside him, Daniel spoke with a smile - this was the first time in a while he'd heard him speak Chinese.
Daryl looked up, his eyes sharp, "Francis said we absolutely can't..."
"Quiet, people are watching." Daniel stopped his anger, his eyes scanning around before landing back on Daryl, "Don't change your expression, speak normally."
Hearing this, Daryl's expression softened slightly. He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, "Those are illegal goods?"
"Yes." Daniel didn't deny it, nodding lightly.
Daryl gritted his teeth, barely able to stay calm, "You should know Francis doesn't let us touch this stuff."
"I know." Daniel sighed somewhat helplessly, "I haven't touched it either, but the person who knows his whereabouts is the boss here."
Daryl looked at him sideways, his eyes cold, "So we have to come here and do business with him to trade for information?"
"No, we're using money to buy his information." Daniel glanced back at the briefcase carried by Seraphim's people, his tone calm, "Buying and selling information is much safer than dealing in illegal goods. He won't turn down this business."
"Then who's this Rocco you mentioned earlier?" Daryl continued asking.
"He's a middleman." Daniel didn't elaborate. He glanced at the people around who looked over when they heard Rocco's name, his tone steady, "Don't mention his name, walls have ears."
Daryl obviously noticed the surveillance from people around them, too. He frowned and took another deep breath, "Fine, but how can you be sure he'll tell the truth?"
Daniel laughed at his words.
"Daryl, we're buying information, not words. Understand?"
