Chapter 24 What They Do Best
Darius
I arrived at the motorcycle working my way through the night.
Thoughts of this afternoon flowed in my mind. It had been a couple of hours since I warned her. And now, since she had blatantly refused to tell me the truth, I was going to get the one thing she was trying to protect here.
I was going to turn her plans around on her, and make her suffer for it. If she was going to lie, then she would have to be willing to face the consequences.
I drove through the night, the roads whizzing by, calling out to my pack.
It was time for a pack meeting.
I drove downtown, through everything, and entered the forest immediately, knowing exactly where I was going. The trees whizzed by, as I searched for it. The one place we had our pack meeting.
A high hill. A clearing above.
Perfect for everything we needed to talk about.
I stopped at a distance from my stop. The moon rose over a steep hill, lighting the entire plateau up. I drove forward, parking beneath the hill, and stepping down from my motorcycle.
I walked around the place to make sure it was secure. We had to be. That was the only way to make things work out. I needed to secure the place. Because if whatever I was talking about got out, it would be very, very hard to deal with.
I was sending my pack out on a manhunt. I didn't need the entire world finding that out so quickly. I needed him gone, cleanly, easily, and pulled off without unnecessary drama.
After scouting the perimeter and making sure it was all clear, I walked up the clearing, standing at its top, and transformed. I needed us in wolf form for this.
That was the only way I could get the exact effect I wanted. This was urgent, and we needed matters of urgency treated in our truest form.
The transformation was easy enough, the pain was already a regular occurrence, and soon I was done, sitting there, the wind blowing between my fur.
The moon looked beautiful tonight, and it was time for me to finally let my pack know what worried their alpha.
I waited there, and it didn't take long before everybody started showing up. Bruno, my beta, came up, his engine revving just before, and within a few minutes, tires screeched across the soil, engines roared beyond.
They were coming in groups, and parking, and transforming as they walked up to our meeting place.
I waited there, taking a mental note of all that I wanted to say, and also noting where and how the reports would be taken.
Mostly Bruno screaming out what and what was the update with our pack safety, and wherever we needed to invade for more resources, but that was it. There was very little to our pack meetings, especially with the general calmness within our territory.
I'd made sure of that once I'd taken care of the Alpha before. He has no heirs, so all I needed to do was get him out of the picture.
Once that was done, I proceeded to take care of security, invading nearby territories to prevent them invading ours. Once there
was no one else for miles, I rested easy facing the interpack business and exchanges.
Simply put, nothing worked better than earning a pack's trust.
They didn't suspect a thing. They couldn't.
No one picked the past over me.
Once most of us were gathered, the betas surrounding me and the omegas behind them, at the far back where they belonged, I began.
“We are gathered here today for another pack meeting. What we need is to come together to get a general target, but before that target is revealed, reports. Bruno.” He stepped forward, his reddish brown fur swaying in the breeze.
“Alpha, thank you for the opportunity. Our surroundings are well secured, and all families within our pack are protected and safe. We have lost none of our wolves in the last month, omegas included, and all banished have been completely exiled now.” He paused, looking mostly at me.
“There are threats of an incoming pack to invade our territory, but that is well taken care of. Wolves have been assigned to guard the borders.” He said the few lines that we had gone over already, hoping to rest the fears of the wolves.
We didn't need them to know the details. They needed to know just enough to keep the pack running smoothly, because the only way to get obedient wolves was to keep them assured, safe, and fed.
“Okay, Bruno, that will be all.” He stepped back, taking his place at the top of the betas.
“Why we are gathered here today is to set out in search of one man. He's human, and his name is Jess, Jess Andrews.” I paused, checking their reactions.
“I want you to catch him, alive or dead, but catch him. And when you do, bring him back to this clearing, and I'll meet you here. Just send word and bring him to this meeting place. Is that clear?” I barked.
“Yes, Alpha.” Layered voices came clear, a symphony of high and low tones blended over themselves.
Some growled, some murmured, and some eyes flitted between me and the pack around them. Some smiled ferociously. Nothing like a good target to get them wandering.
“Is that clear?” I asked again.
“Yes, Alpha.” A few nodded. I locked eyes with some of them, establishing dominance, so they knew where exactly they were bringing the target to.
“That will be all.” The meeting broke up into smaller groups. Families getting themselves together and leaving.
Betas flitting through other betas looking for their mates. Some just rode off into the distance immediately.
I waited as the entire place cleared, soon leaving me and the moon alone.
I spoke to the moon.
“You know what's best.” I raised a paw. “Guide them.” I dropped it, nodding to myself.
Itransformed back, walking down and riding home again.
Another pack meeting was done.
It was time to sit back and let my people do what they do best.
