One hundred and Seven- Mamazing
One hundred and Seven- Mamazing
SARAH PIERCE
Nathaniel was right. Tomorrow might come, and I’ll be forced back to that dreadful hell. I know that because I can feel a darkness slowly creeping into the depths of my soul with a hunger that might not be easy to fight against.
The joy I feel now, thanks to Nathaniel, I might not get to experience it tomorrow.
And annoyingly, even the doctor confirmed my fears. That my state cannot be considered stable.
That’s so sad. And I hate it!
But…
I have to at least enjoy the excitement I feel now.
So, when Raya and my mum entered just after the doctor and nurses left, I showed my beautiful daughter the biggest smile ever, my arms embracing her so much that I think I might have scared her a bit.
“My baby.” I scattered kisses all over her face. “Mummy is so happy to see you!”
“Mummy, wait.”
“Huh?” She had her palm pressed to my cheek, stopping my love attack, her face looking super serious. “Was I hurting you?” I asked seconds later. “Where did you get hurt? Here?” I checked her knees. “Here?” Her arms next. “Raya, talk to me,” I insisted when she didn’t reply.
“Mummy,” she whispered, and my beating heart replied louder than my lips that answered to her. “I…” My frown was now very deep. I was starting to contemplate jumping out of bed to take her to the doctor. “I miss you, Mummy.”
“Uh?” Within my subtle confusion, a precious feeling filled my soul, and it grew bigger when she moved and planted a long kiss on my right cheek. “Raya…”
She wrapped her tiny arms around my neck and whispered, “I know mummy fine now.”
“Raya…” My eyes were not holding back tears this time.
“I also fine. And… And Dada fine too.”
“Oh…” My voice trembled so hard, my silent crying turned into a little groan. “You just said Dada.” As I hugged her more, I said, “You are right. Dada and Mummy are fine. And I am so, so happy that you are fine too.” I wonder if she even understands what I’m saying. I sound like a whale in labour. “I love you, my brave girl. For surviving even if you were scared. I love you so much.”
“Not scared, Mummy.” She was now stroking the back of my head, and that tenderness reached into that soul and snapped at that darkness I mentioned.
“I know,” I replied through a sniffle that reset my tears. “I know my beautiful Raya is not scared of anything or anybody. My baby is so amazing. So, so amazing.”
“You mamazing too, mummy.”
I laughed and was wiping away my tears when I noticed the gloominess on my mother’s face.
“Yes. I am also amazing.”
I doubt this would be the best time to speak to Raya about what happened when she was taken, so I’ll just allow us to bask in the beauty of this simple moment.
However, just as my daughter has uplifted me, I want to do the same for my mother, whom I am so apologetic to. I was unruly towards her, especially after Nathaniel’s accident. And worse, there’s the news about Rosaline, which, honestly, I’ve been struggling not to think about.
So, after sitting Raya on my lap and planting simple kisses on her forehead and hands, I faced my mum, who was seated on the chair next to my bed and asked, “Did Edward Storm say something disturbing?”
“Ehn?”
My thumb swept off the little streaks of tears that managed to escape while I calmed my soul.
“You don’t look very good,” I continued. “Are you not feeling well?”
“Sarah…” The distress in her eyes grew tenfold. “I just heard about Rosaline. And… And Nolan, too.”
“Nolan? Nolan Pierce?”
“You even had to witness that animal do that to your sister,” she gravely lamented as she exposed the sobs she had been fighting. “What sort of terrible fate is this?”
“Nolan Pierce?” I asked again. “What… Did something happen to him, too?”
“Oh. I thought…”
“Did that man do something to him?”
“N-No. He was found at home. Gone. I think it was around the time Rosaline was arrested.”
“Gone?” I was weirdly more affected than I wished to be by that news. “As in, no longer in this world?”
“Yeah…” Her eyes quickly hid their pain. “I shouldn’t have mentioned it. I…”
“It doesn’t matter, Mum. Rosaline’s last moment is still fresh in my mind. The news of Nolan Pierce holds no candle to it. But, really? He’s gone? Just like that?”
“Is it foolish of me to say I feel terrible for planning to deal with him?”
“I don’t think so. Just because he’s no more doesn’t erase the horrible things he did. I’m not feeling sorry for him, I just didn’t expect that his time would be up so soon.”
“I know. And I understand. But I’m just so confused by how I feel right now.”
“He was Rosaline’s father,” I laid out the facts. “And Rosaline… was your daughter.” Speaking of Rosaline in the past tense came with a heavy feeling. “When it comes to families, hatred sometimes has to step aside, especially in situations like these.”
“You are right.” She sighed and continued, “I don’t want to bother you with this. I’ll take care of their funeral, so just rest well. Okay?”
“Will you be fine?” I asked as she weakly got up. Watching her reminded me that motherhood never ends. No matter how grown your children are, their pain becomes yours just as Raya’s healing was mine now.
“I hope so,” she replied.
“And Edward Storm, what do you plan to do to him?”
“Whatever you and your husband wish,” was her response.
I didn’t get to speak. She was already out of the room, her sorrow dripping after her.
With a sigh, I decided not to think about all that. Once I do, I’ll be granting an open invitation to the hell waiting to haunt me.
“Raya, mummy has…”
She was asleep, looking beautifully peaceful, her presence casting a spell on me that made me think of nothing else but her and how grateful I was for the gift of her.
