Chapter 27
Chapter 27
It was already four PM when Markus allowed me to leave his office. At first, he didn't want to, he wanted us to go back to the villa. I didn't agree, I had a lot of pending work. Because of the time I had spent with him earlier, I couldn't even finish half of it.
So now, I'm rushing to finish the files. There's only an hour left before I go home. I'm sure I'll be working overtime on this.
My head hurts from the stress. Was my decision to go to work right? I was tempted by Markus' offer to work in his office instead. But if I agree, maybe he won't ask me to do anything. Maybe I'll just wait for him to finish his work, or maybe we'll just stare at each other all day.
"Celes, let's go! Let's go home!" Lindy invited me to go home.
I looked at the time. It was already five o'clock! I didn't realize it. I sighed. I was really stressed!
"I'm not done yet, Lindy. I'm going to work overtime now so I can finish at least half of this."
"What? You just got back, and you're already working overtime? Can't you finish it next week? Don't be tired, you know you just got back from an illness."
I remember, I told Lindy that I got sick, so I was away from work for a long time.
"This is important. It needs to be finished right away," I said.
"Okay. Go home when you're done, huh? Bye. Take care," Lindy said goodbye.
"Be careful too, Lindy" I just nodded. I didn't look at him anymore. My back and fingers were hurting from typing too much on the keyboard.
"Have you finished what I asked you to do, Miss Delaney? Especially the important ones?" said Madam Violeta.
I froze in my seat. It was scary how suddenly she would pop up like a mushroom.
"Madam Violeta, I'm not done yet. I promise I'll pass this on to you tomorrow," I replied, nervously.
I saw her eyebrows arch. A sign that she was getting annoyed with me. Was she going to yell at me?
"What have you been doing all day, and you haven't finished what I asked you to do? Not even the things you should have finished earlier?!" Madam Violeta said angrily.
Her face became even stricter. I stood up and bowed in front of her.
"I promise, I'll finish this tomorrow"
"Tomorrow?! Tomorrow? You won't be able to finish that either! You should have been fired from this company a long time ago for being incompetent! You're pretty, but you're useless!"
I winced in pain at what she said. I held back tears. Okay, okay, it's really my fault.
"I don't know why people are so in favor of you even though you're so incompetent!"
"I-I'm sorry, Madam"
I bit my lip to keep from crying at what she said. It's just work, nothing personal.
"What the fuck are you doing?!" Markus shouted loudly. His face was dark.
Did he hear what Madam Violeta said? Oh! I hope not. Markus will have Madam Violeta fired even if the lady's reason is valid.
"Mr. Sullivan, I'm just telling Miss Delaney about her incompetence at work," Madam Violeta explained.
I shook my head secretly at Markus. I telling not to scold Madam Violeta because she was just doing her job.
Markus's brow furrowed. I saw his fist clenched, trying to control his anger.
I held my breath, waiting for Markus to say something. I hope he follows me. Madam Violeta didn't know that Markus was annoyed with her. She thought maybe it was in her favor.
"Is that so? Go away, I'll take care of this," said Markus.
I let out a breath, it was so loud that Madam Violeta turned to me. Her eyes slit, threatening me to get my act together and not do anything stupid around the CEO.
"It won't happen again, Mr. Sullivan. I'll train her to be a good employee."
"Yeah, you can go now."
"I'm not done with you yet..." Madam Violeta whispered to me before saying goodbye to us. I swallowed hard at her threat.
It looks like I'm going to have a hard time going to work every day.
I sat up as Madam Violeta disappeared from my sight. I suddenly felt weak.
"You're afraid of her, but you're not afraid of me? Are you kidding me, Celestine?" Markus commented. When he noticed my reaction.
I shook my head. Isn't he afraid of Madam Violeta? She looks like a witch. Maybe she'll even cast a spell on me because she's so annoyed with me.
"Why is she treating you like that? I'll punish her!"
"No need. It's my fault, I didn't finish what she asked me to do" because of you, you didn't let me go earlier. That's what I wanted to add.
But knowing Markus. No matter what excuse I give, what he thinks is right for him, that's what he'll follow. That won't change his mind.
"I told you to just go to the office. You're working hard here in your department."
"Yeah, but we won't get done because we won't have anything to do all day," I said sluggishly. I started typing on the keyboard.
Markus sat down in the swivel chair next to me.
"Your suggestion is good. I like it" his tone suddenly changed. From annoyed to happy.
I rolled my eyes. He was really childish. I didn't suggest anything like that.
"I saw that! You rolled your eyes at me again! You know what the punishment is for that."
"Markus, I need to finish this. You go home first. Go ahead," I said as I changed the topic. Maybe he'll actually kiss me. I can't finish these pending things if he's flirting with me!
"I won't leave you. I'll be with you while you finish those damn useless papers," he replied. He crossed his arms. Looking at me.
The swivel chair looks small because of his massive body. Even though his chair is probably made from a monoblock chair, he's still handsome. It's really unfair.
"Okay, give me some time to finish this" I answered.
I sat up straight as he hugged me from my side. He rested his head on my shoulder.
"I hope you can remember now. I miss you so much, Celestine" he whispered.
I smiled secretly. I stroked his hair. I hoped I would remember so that the questions in my mind could be answered.
"I will. Maybe soon," I whispered to him.
Markus nodded sadly. He told me to finish what I was doing so we could go home immediately. He offered to help me, but he made a lot of mistakes. Is he seriously the CEO?!
So instead of asking him for help. I'll do it myself. It's safer if I do it.
I've been busy finishing pending files. I didn't look back at what Markus was doing next to me. I might get distracted again if I stared at him. I remembered again the kiss he gave me in his office.
As of now, I still can't forget the sensation I felt when he kissed me.
The clock chimed, signaling that it was twelve midnight. My light was the only one on this floor. It was a sign that we were the only people here.
Time flies. I stretch to get rid of the ache in my back. I stretched my hands too. I'm tired of typing on the keyboard.
I look at Markus. He's been quiet for a while now.
He was curled up on the table next to me. Based on his peaceful breathing. He was obviously asleep. To the naked eye, he looked like an ordinary person. There was no way he was a vampire.
He must have gotten tired of waiting for me. I felt pitiful and, at the same time, happy. I couldn't believe that he could wait for me, especially since he's the CEO of the company.
I've arranged the papers properly. I've separated the finished ones that should be submitted tomorrow. And the ones that are still unfinished. When I was done with my work, I rolled my swivel chair closer to Markus.
I stroked his hair. A smile spread across my lips.
"Poor Markus," I said in my mind. He was sad earlier before he pulled away from his embrace. I hadn't paid attention because my mind was busy with other things.
I couldn't see his face. He was leaning on the table. Too bad. I wish he had just taken a side view, so I could appreciate his handsomeness.
I laughed softly. All sorts of nonsense entered my mind.
I stopped laughing when I felt a headache. I held my forehead. My vision became double. I see an image in my mind. It's blurry.
"Why did you do that, Markus!?" it was my voice while crying.
"That's what they all deserve. To die, Celestine!" Markus' tone was full and frightening. His entire body was covered in blood.
"Hey, are you okay?"
I looked at Markus. He was awake. He was curious as he looked at me.
What was that? What did Markus do to make me cry? Why is he covered in blood?
I shook my head helplessly. Did he have anything to do with my parents' deaths? I remembered that the last thing my mother said was Sullivan before she lost her life.
"Look at me, Celestine. What happened?" he cupped both my cheeks. I saw his worried expression.
I smiled. He couldn't know that something was slowly returning to my memory.
"Nothing. I'm just sleepy," I replied sparingly. I can't prolong what I said, and he might notice that there's something wrong with me.
"Come on. Let's go home. It's twelve o'clock at night. We're having a late dinner," he said.
He turned off the light in my cubicle. I picked up my bag from the table. He held my hand to help me stand up and put his arm around my back to support me.
