Chapter 48: Evelyn’s Next Move

Chapter 48: Evelyn’s Next Move
Evelyn Callahan’s POV

The adrenaline was still coursing through me, thick and relentless, but it was no longer fear that surged within my veins. It was power. The kind of power that only comes when you’ve been pushed to the brink, when everything you hold dear is at stake, and when you realize you’ve been holding back for too long.

I had spent years, years, looking for the right moment to strike, hoping against hope that I wouldn’t have to resort to extreme measures. But this... this was different. Serena had made her move. She had forced my hand, taken my son from me, and buried truths that had the potential to destroy everything she had worked so hard to build.

Now it was my turn.

I was no longer going to wait.

The proof was with me.

The bribed lab results, photos of the changed documents, and the emails that Serena had worked so hard to hide were all in the folder I was holding. I had everything.

I was going to put it out there.

It was no longer just for me that I was doing this. I was not just getting back at people who lied to and manipulated me for years. I was being honest with Adrian, Damien, my family's future, and the world because a woman thought she had power over everything and lied to everyone.

As I double-checked the contacts on my phone, I stood at the edge of my office desk, my fingers shaking just a little. It would be Damien who I call first because he needs to know what is going on. He had shown that he was smarter and more resourceful than I thought. He had the right to know what was going to happen so that he could be ready for what happened.

I called him.

It went off.

And rang.

Dammit.

I cursed under my breath, glancing at the clock on my wall. He was probably still at that damned library, trying to track Adrian down. I knew he had a soft spot for his brother. But I also knew that there was no time for niceties anymore.

With a click, I put the phone back in the desk drawer and locked it. We did not need to wait for Damien. I was now ready to destroy Serena with everything I had. It was time to take action.

I opened the folder and stared at the documents once more. There was a clear pattern in the emails. The pattern that showed Serena’s calculated manipulation, her deliberate attempts to tear apart Kieran’s bond with Adrian.

That was it.

I wasn’t backing down anymore. The world would know who Serena was.

Not thinking twice, I started writing an email right away.  Word by word, typing them felt like a burden I had been carrying for years that was getting heavier and heavier, threatening to crush me every day.

To: The Blackfang Board of Directors
 Cc: Damien Blackwood
Subject: Serena Blackwood’s Deceitful Actions – Proof Attached

Dear Board Members,

I hope this mail finds you well. I am writing to bring to your immediate attention some troubling and important evidence about what Serena Blackwood, the current CEO of Blackfang Enterprises, has done lately.

Serena has been keeping Kieran Blackwood from making good decisions and from making sure his kids are safe for years. By using sneaky methods, she has made a plan to get money for herself while making Kieran think his son Adrian is not biologically his. Because of these actions, the family is no longer together, and Adrian's identity and Kieran's emotional state will never be the same.

Attached are proofs that she lied, such as changed paternity results, lab reports that were not what they seemed to be, and emails that show she paid important people involved in these decisions to make decisions in her favour. I strongly urge you to look into this matter right away and hold Serena responsible for what she did.

How Blackfang Enterprises turns out and what will happen to Kieran Blackwood and his kids depends on how quickly you step in. The oldest son of Kieran, Damien Blackwood, is part of this communication because these events have a direct effect on him.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and look into this important matter.

Many thanks,
 What Evelyn Callahan

I leaned back and stared at the screen. My heart was beating fast. I thought about how important what I was about to do for a moment. But I could not go back. Everything would change as soon as I hit "send." Before I clicked, my hand was just above the mouse and was shaking a little.

Send.

I took a deep breath in and out slowly. It was still buzzing on my fingers. For the first time in years, I felt calm and ease. The truth was out. Though Serena thought she had a lot of power over Kieran and Adrian, she didn't.

I could feel fear rising in my spine even though all I did was stare at the screen. It would not be possible to stop this now. You can not take it back.

The phone rang once more.

When I picked it up, I hoped it was Damien, but when I saw the caller ID, my heart sank.

Serena it was.

I did not answer right away. After letting it ring three times, I answered it in my most prim and proper voice.

"Yes?"

Hi, Evelyn. I could tell she was tense because her voice was tight and controlled. "What did you do?"

I held on to the desk edge to keep myself steady. Serena, what do you think I did to deserve this? The truth is out. You can not hide anywhere else.

She laughed sourly, but not so hard that it hurt her eyes. "Do you think you have won?" You think this will stop me?”

“I know it will,” I replied, my voice colder than I’d intended. “The board will act, and Kieran will see you for who you are.”

There was a long pause. On the other end of the queue, I could hear even, steady breathing from her. "Evelyn, I hope you are ready for what will happen." Since this is not over yet. "Not even close."

I did not answer. I did not have to.

I had never really taken Serena's threats seriously. But this was not like the others. This time, it wasn’t just about protecting Kieran. It was about my family. My son.

And Serena did not think much of me.

The queue stopped talking.

I leaned back in my chair. For some reason, I was both tired and energised.

Things were going to get messy over the next few days.  I was ready for it, though.

Right then, a loud knock on the door woke me up.

The last time I looked up, Damien was standing by the door. I could not tell what he was thinking because his face was so pale.

"Damien?" I said as I quickly stood up. "What is wrong?"

He was not quick to answer. He shut the door behind him and walked into the room.

He spoke softly and strainedly, "Adrian's gone."

My heart stopped. "What do you mean?" Where is he?”

“I don’t know. He left the library an hour ago. One of his friends just sent me a message. Since then, no one has seen him.

"Damien, where could he be?"

He said again, "I do not know." “But I think Serena is involved. She’s got him.”

It made my stomach hurt.  "What?"

Taking a deep breath, he focused his eyes even more.  "She would like more than just Kieran's company."  She wants the boys.  And if we do not find Adrian quickly...

I said in a stern voice, "We will." "We need to."

I went back to my desk and took out my phone again.

This time, when I hit “send,” it wasn’t just an email.

It was a declaration.

A declaration of war.
