Chapter 49 Brother

Chapter 49 Brother

Her brother is already here.
The words echoed through the ruins.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody even blinked.
Lena felt her heart slam against her ribs.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then chaos erupted.
"What?"
Jacob's voice cracked halfway through the word.
The rescued students immediately began looking around.
Several members of the Ash Court turned toward each other.
Orion spun toward Lyra.
Lyra spun toward Orion.
Caelum's gaze swept across the entire ruin.
Searching.
Calculating.
Hunting.
And Caleb...
Caleb looked ready to kill someone.
The stranger smiled.
Apparently very pleased with himself.
Lena stared at him.
Then at the people around her.
Then back at him.
"What does that mean?"
The stranger tilted his head.
"You understood the sentence."
"No."
Her voice sharpened.
"I understood the words."
A few people nodded.
Including Jacob.
The stranger sighed dramatically.
"Fair."
Then he pointed.
Not at a specific person.
Just generally toward the ruins.
"He's here."
The atmosphere instantly became worse.
Much worse.
Because now everyone was looking at everyone else.
The rescued students.
The Ash Court.
The Wolf Court.
The random collection of supernatural disasters currently occupying the palace ruins.
Nobody knew who to trust.
Nobody knew who to suspect.
Lena's pulse quickened.
Then a horrible thought occurred to her.
"What if he's one of the students?"
Silence.
Nobody answered immediately.
Which meant they'd all thought the same thing.
Jacob visibly paled.
"Oh."
The realization hit him.
"Oh, that's bad."
"Yes."
Lyra didn't even look at him.
"That would be very bad."
Jacob swallowed.
Hard.
Then immediately stepped away from the other students.
The other students glared at him.
"Sorry."
He took another step.
"Nothing personal."
The stranger laughed.
A soft amused laugh.
Then shook his head.
"No."
Everyone froze.
No?
The stranger's smile widened.
"He's not one of them."
Relief spread across several faces.
Briefly.
Very briefly.
Then the next realization hit.
If he wasn't one of the students...
Then he was someone else.
Someone already standing here.
The ruins suddenly felt much smaller.
Much more dangerous.
Lena looked around carefully.
Caelum.
Seraphine.
Orion.
Lyra.
Caleb.
The stranger.
The rescued students.
The members of the Ash Court.
Who?
Who could possibly be her brother?
The mark on her wrist burned.
Not painfully.
Just enough to draw her attention.
Her gaze drifted across the clearing.
Past the shattered throne.
Past the broken pillars.
Past the ancient staircase.
Then she froze.
Someone was missing.
The realization hit instantly.
One second they were there.
The next...
They weren't.
"Where's Adrian?"
The ruins fell silent.
Again.
Everyone looked around.
Lena's stomach dropped.
Because Adrian was gone.
Completely gone.
No sound.
No warning.
No goodbye.
Gone.
Orion swore immediately.
A very colorful string of words followed.
Caelum's expression darkened.
The stranger stopped smiling.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Then a slow clap echoed from above.
Everyone looked up.
A lone figure stood atop one of the ruined towers.
Moonlight illuminated dark clothing.
Dark hair.
A familiar face.
Adrian.
Except...
Not Adrian.
Not really.
Something about him felt different.
Wrong.
His posture.
His smile.
His eyes.
Especially his eyes.
Lena felt her breath catch.
Because his eyes were silver.
Bright silver.
Almost glowing.
The entire ruin froze.
Adrian looked down at them.
Then sighed.
"Well."
His voice sounded normal.
Completely normal.
Which somehow made it worse.
"I was hoping to leave before this part."
Nobody moved.
Nobody interrupted.
Then Adrian rubbed the back of his neck.
Actually looking embarrassed.
"Honestly."
He shrugged.
"The plan was going really well."
Jacob blinked.
"The plan?"
Adrian pointed at himself.
"Me."
Then pointed at the ruins.
"Being here."
Then spread his arms.
"Not getting caught."
The silence that followed was deafening.
Lena stared.
Adrian smiled weakly.
"Okay, saying it out loud makes it sound worse."
Nobody laughed.
Not even Jacob.
Then Seraphine whispered something.
So quietly Lena almost didn't hear it.
"No."
The queen looked genuinely shaken.
"No."
Adrian's smile faded.
The playful attitude disappeared.
Gone.
Instantly.
Then he looked at Seraphine.
And for the first time Lena saw actual emotion in his eyes.
Real emotion.
Pain.
"So that's how we're doing this."
The words carried across the ruins.
Quiet.
Sharp.
Personal.
Something passed between them.
Something old.
Something complicated.
Then Adrian looked at Lena.
Everything else disappeared.
The ruins.
The courts.
The strangers.
The war.
For one brief moment it felt like there were only two people in the world.
Him.
And her.
The mark on Lena's wrist exploded with silver light.
A memory slammed into her.
A tower.
White stone.
Blue sky.
A little girl sitting on a wall.
A little boy beside her.
Both laughing.
Both younger.
Both happy.
The boy held out his hand.
His grin was reckless.
Confident.
Familiar.
"Race you to the bottom."
"You'll cheat."
"Only if I'm losing."
"That's cheating."
"It's strategy."
The memory shattered.
Lena staggered.
A sharp gasp escaped her lips.
Then another.
No.
No.
No.
It couldn't be.
It absolutely couldn't be.
Adrian watched her.
And slowly...
Very slowly...
The smile returned.
Not mocking.
Not cruel.
Sad.
Just sad.
"Lena."
The way he said her name hurt.
Like he'd been waiting years to say it.
Years.
The realization hit like a truck.
The tower.
The memories.
The laughter.
The familiarity.
The feeling she'd never been able to explain.
The feeling she'd had since meeting Adrian.
The strange comfort.
The strange connection.
The sense that she'd known him before.
Her knees nearly gave out.
"No."
The whisper escaped before she could stop it.
Adrian's eyes softened.
And that made it worse.
Much worse.
Because suddenly she knew.
Not completely.
Not logically.
But emotionally.
Instinctively.
Deep inside.
She knew.
The truth had been standing beside her this entire time.
The truth had joked with her.
Talked to her.
Protected her.
Argued with her.
The truth had been there from the beginning.
Adrian took a step forward.
Standing atop the ruined tower.
Moonlight surrounding him.
Silver eyes glowing softly.
Then he spoke.
Three words.
Three simple words.
Words that shattered the world.
"Hello, little sister."
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Jacob sat down.
Actually sat down.
Right there on the ruins.
"I quit."
No one paid attention to him.
Lena couldn't breathe.
Couldn't think.
Couldn't process.
Adrian.
Her brother.
Adrian.
The person she'd known for weeks.
The person she'd trusted.
The person she'd laughed with.
The person she'd never suspected.
A thousand moments flashed through her mind.
Every conversation.
Every joke.
Every warning.
Every time he'd looked at her strangely.
Every time he'd almost said something.
Every single piece suddenly made sense.
And she hated it.
Because if Adrian was her brother...
Then he'd known all along.
The realization cut deeper than anything else.
"You knew."
The words barely left her lips.
Adrian didn't deny it.
Didn't dodge.
Didn't avoid.
He simply nodded.
Once.
Slowly.
Painfully.
"Yes."
The answer shattered something inside her.
The anger came immediately.
Fast.
Hot.
Explosive.
"You knew?"
Her voice cracked.
"You knew and you didn't tell me?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
Just briefly.
When he opened them again, the guilt was obvious.
Raw.
Unhidden.
"I wanted to."
The confession echoed through the ruins.
"I tried."
His voice grew quieter.
"More than once."
Lena remembered.
Suddenly she remembered.
All those strange moments.
All those interrupted conversations.
All those times he'd looked like he wanted to say something.
The memories hurt.
Because now she understood them.
Then Adrian looked toward Caleb.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
Dangerous.
Heavy.
Complicated.
And when Adrian spoke again...
His voice carried enough emotion to silence the entire ruin.
"I wasn't the one who stopped it."
The words landed like a bomb.
Every head turned toward Caleb.
Immediately.
Instantly.
Caleb froze.
And for the first time all night...
He didn't have an answer.
He didn't have a defense.
He didn't have a comeback.
Nothing.
Only silence.
And somehow...
That silence was louder than anything else.
