Chapter 41
Kael's pov
I watch Rue leave my room, her determination and willingness to help lifting a weight off my shoulders. For the first time in weeks, I feel a glimmer of hope.
Maybe, just maybe, with Rue by my side, I can hasten the planning and clear her name faster and get rid of the looming sense of doom I feel about the war with the moonswine pack.
But as the door closes behind her, my thoughts betray me. The past I've desperately tried to keep at bay comes flooding back.
Why am I pushing myself so hard?
It's not just about protecting Rue or preparing the pack for war.
It's about escaping the ghosts that haunt me.
The memories I've tried to bury.
My mind begins to wander, and I'm transported back to that fateful day.
The day my brother, Arin, died.
The day I failed him.
Guilt and regret threaten to consume me, but I force myself to push the thoughts away.
Not now.
I'm tired.
Too tired.
I need rest.
I head to my bathroom, seeking solace in the routine of bathing.
As I shave, my eyes meet my reflection, and for a moment, I see his face staring back.
My heart clenches.
I quickly finish my routine, trying to shake off the memories.
Donning pajamas, I climb into bed, hoping to quiet the voices that refuse to silence.
But they linger, echoing in my mind.
"Your fault... Your fault and now you will suffer the consequences."
I try to focus on Rue's offer, on the hope it brings.
With her help, maybe I can find redemption.
Maybe I can silence the ghosts.
As I drift off to sleep, the weight of my past still lingers, but for the first time in months, I feel a glimmer of peace.
Perhaps, just perhaps, I'm not alone in this fight.
The darkness closes in, but I welcome it, exhausted.
Tomorrow, I'll face my demons again.
But for now, I sleep.
I wake up, my mind still reeling from the nightmares that plagues my dreams every night. The memories of death linger, refusing to grant me peace.
Determined to shake off the darkness, I get dressed and head out for a jog.
The crisp morning air greets me as I pound the garden's winding paths.
As I round a bend, I spot Rue doing her physical training.
But it's not Ethan by her side.
A new instructor.
My curiosity piques.
What happened between them?
I jog past, catching Rue's gaze for a fleeting moment.
Her eyes follow me, then refocus on her instructor.
I continue jogging, clearing my mind for the day's tasks.
Meetings with leaders to discuss funding and medical assistance.
Spies' reports on the Moonswine Pack.
I push aside lingering thoughts, focusing on the present.
After my jog, I shower, dress, and head to the dining room.
Rue's already seated, eating hastily.
"Good morning," she greets, smiling.
"Morning," I reply, taking my seat.
"What's the hurry?" I ask, noticing her rushed pace.
"I don't want to keep you waiting," she says.
I chuckle. "Eat slowly, Rue. It's not good for your stomach."
She nods, slows down, and finishes her breakfast.
As she leaves to get ready, I wait in the living room.
Minutes pass, and she descends, dressed in a sporting outfit.
"Good thinking," I say, impressed. "You dressed for the occasion."
"I was going to wear corporate attire," she replies, "but I saw your clothes and remembered we're training troops."
I laugh, and we head out to the car.
Thomas greets us, and I take the front seat, leaving the back for Rue.
As we drive, my mind drifts back to Ethan's replacement.
My curiosity gets the better of me.
"What happened to Ethan?,I notice he has been replaced." I ask, trying to sound casual.
Rue hesitates.
"Things happened," she says finally. "It wasn't comfortable for us to work together anymore."
My curiosity deepens.
"Did Ethan make a pass at you?" I ask jokingly.
Rue's pause makes me glance back.
She's staring at me, her eyes locked onto mine.
"I thought I wanted something with Ethan," she begins slowly. "And Ethan did too... but I realized I didn't, really want it,it was just a distraction from something else."
"Oh."I say unable to bring myself to say any of the words threatening to come out if my mouth.
Our gazes hold for a moment.
Tension builds.
I look away, focusing on the road ahead.
I dare not risk exploring the emotions stirring within me.
Not now.
Not when the truth about my past remains shrouded.
We drive in silence until we reach the pack's headquarters.
As we step out, Rue asks, "I thought we were training troops today?"
"First, we have a meeting with the elders," I explain.
She nods, and we walk toward the conference hall.
Inside, I take my usual seat at the head of the table.
Rue sits beside me, her presence commanding attention.
The elders gather, their faces solemn.
Today's discussions will shape our war strategy.
The elders settle in, their faces grave. I begin, "Today, we discuss our war strategy against the Moonswine Pack."
Rue listens intently, her eyes scanning the room.
"Our spies report minimal activity from the Moonswine Pack," I continue. "But we can't assume they're not planning something."
Elder Thompson nods. "Agreed. We must prepare for any eventuality."
"We've increased troop training," I say. "But medical assistance and funding are crucial."
Rue speaks up, "I agree. The troops' well being is paramount."
Elder Patel nods. "We've allocated additional funds for medical supplies and equipment."
"Extensive preparations are necessary," I emphasize. "We'll also establish emergency response teams."
The meeting progresses, with discussions on tactics, supply chains, and intelligence gathering.
Rue actively participates, offering valuable insights.
As the meeting concludes, I summarize, "We'll continue to monitor the Moonswine Pack's activities. Prepare our troops, and ensure medical assistance is readily available."
The elders nod in agreement.
With the meeting adjourned, Rue and I leave the conference hall.
Thomas awaits us, holding the car door open.
"Troop grounds, Thomas," I instruct.
As we drive, Rue asks, "What's the plan for today's training?"
"We'll focus on combat strategies and teamwork," I reply.
Rue nods, her expression determined.
We arrive at the troop grounds, where soldiers gather, eager for instruction.
"Let's get started," I say to Rue, leading her to the training area.
Thomas remains by the car, ever vigilant.
The day's training begins, with Rue by my side.
Together, we'll prepare the troops for the impending war.
I glance at Rue, surprised at her knowledge about war training and various formation to cover places if weakness.
Her skills and knowledge will be invaluable in our fight.
The training session concludes, and we head to the dining hall for a luncheon with the training officials.
As we enter, the aroma of roasted meats and fresh vegetables greets us.
Rue's impressive display of strategic thinking during the training session still resonates in my mind.
"Rue, your ideas were exceptional today," I say, as we take our seats.
"Thank you, Kael," she replies, smiling. "I learned a lot from my father. He always wanted me involved in our pack's affairs."
Her eyes sparkle, reflecting fond memories.
"I'm glad you're applying those skills here," I continue. "Your insight will greatly benefit our troops."
Rue's face flushes, her expression grateful.
We engage in conversation with the other officials, discussing the training's success and potential improvements.
As lunch concludes, I glance at Rue.
"I usually have a personal training session with Dale now," I say. "Would you like to join me or have Thomas drive you back to the house?"
Rue considers for a moment.
"I'll tag along," she decides.
We exit the dining hall, walking toward the training grounds.
Dale awaits us, his rugged frame imposing.
"Kael, Rue," he greets, nodding.
"Today's focus will be hand-to-hand combat," Dale announces.
Rue's eyes light up, eager.
I exchange a glance with Dale, and he nods.
"Let's begin," Dale says.
With Rue by my side, we embark on the intense training session.
I begin my training session with Dale, focusing on hand-to-hand combat.
Rue sits at a distance, watching intently.
Dale notices my distraction and follows my gaze.
"Who's that?" Dale asks, nodding toward Rue.
"Rue," I reply. "She's been helping with troop training. Her strategic thinking is impressive."
I say leaving out the part of who rue is and why she is here I don't want to lie to him but I just don't have the strength to explain everything that has kead to rue bring here.
Dale raises an eyebrow.
"From which pack?" he asks.
"She's...complicated," I say, hesitant. "Her past is shrouded, but her skills are undeniable."
Dale nods thoughtfully.
We continue training, Dale pushing me to my limits.
Finally, we conclude.
"Remember, Kael, eat, rest, and don't push yourself too hard," Dale advises.
"I will," I assure him.
Dale departs, leaving me to join Rue.
As I approach, Rue stands, her eyes scanning me.
"Your stances are good," she says. "Dale's trained you well."
I smile, pleased.
"Thanks," I reply. "Let's head back."
Thomas awaits us, holding the car door open.
We drive back to the house in comfortable silence.
We arrive at the house, the warm sunlight casting a welcoming glow.
Thomas opens the door, and we step out.
"Thank you, Thomas," I say.
"My pleasure, sir," Thomas replies.
Rue smiles, her eyes sparkling.
"Today was a good day," she says.
I nod in agreement.
"Indeed, thank you for your help it has taken some work off my neck especially in training the troops." I reply.
"You're welcome." She replies.
We walk into the house, the silence comfortable.
Rue heads toward the staircase.
"I think I'll rest for a bit," she says.
"Of course," I respond.
I watch her ascend the stairs.
Her footsteps fade as she reaches her room.
I remain downstairs.
My thoughts drift to the day's events.
Rue's impressive display during training.
Her insightful suggestions,Our conversation during lunch,I realize I've enjoyed her company even though we still seem to be walking in egg shells around each other.
More than I expected,I shake off the thought,Focus on the task at hand,Clearing Rue's name,Preparing for war,I head to my study,To review strategies,And plan our next move.
