Chapter Twenty One
Kael's pov
I walk out to the parking area, where Thomas stands by the car. He opens the door, and I slide into the backseat.
"Ready, Alpha?" Thomas asks, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror.
"Yes." I reply.
Thomas navigates through the evening traffic, and we arrive at the Silver Oak pack's ballroom. The grand structure looms before us, its facade aglow with soft lighting.
Thomas pulls up to the entrance and opens the door for me. I step out, adjusting my cufflinks.
"Enjoy the evening, Alpha." Thomas says with a nod.
I smile and head toward the ballroom.
As I enter the hall, I'm immediately struck by its opulence. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the dance floor. The sound of music and laughter fills the air.
I pause for a moment, taking in the sights and sounds. The room is filled with Marrok's pack members, all dressed in their finest attire.
Marrok spots me and makes his way over, a warm smile on his face.
"Kael, welcome! You look stunning tonight."
I smile, shaking his hand.
"Thanks, Marrok. Your pack knows how to throw a party."
Marrok chuckles leading me through the crowded ballroom, nodding at pack members as we pass. We arrive at a lavish table, where a stunning woman with piercing blue eyes and raven black hair greets is..
"Kael, please meet my mate, Clara." Marrok says, his eyes shining with pride.
Clara's smile illuminates the space around her.
"Alpha Kael, it's an honor."
I take her hand, feeling a spark of admiration.
"The pleasure's mine, Clara. You're breathtaking."
Clara's cheeks flush, and Marrok chuckles.
"Thank you, Kael. Please, join us."
We take our seats, and the evening unfolds with laughter and conversation. The table is laden with exquisite dishes, and we indulge in the finest cuisine.
As we dine, Clara regales us with stories of her charitable endeavors within the pack. Her passion and compassion are inspiring, and I find myself captivated by her presence.
Once we've finished eating, Marrok pushes back his chair.
"Shall we enjoy the music, Kael?"
I nod, and Marrok leads me to the dance hall along with Clara . The room pulses with energy, the music swirling around us.
As we enter, Clara excuses herself.
"If you'll pardon me, gentlemen, I need to attend to some pack matters."
I watch her leave, struck by her elegance. Beautiful, intelligent, and kind Marrok's mate is truly remarkable. I wonder, in passing, how Marrok could consider being with anyone else even for a night when he already has such an extraordinary partner.
Marrok notices my gaze following Clara.
"She's something, isn't she?" he says with a smile.
I nod, polite. "She's lovely."
Marrok leans in, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone.
"Now, let's find you someone to enjoy the evening with. I have just the ladies in mind."
He guides me through the crowd, introducing me to several young women. Each is stunning in her own right, but I find myself comparing them to Rue.
Marrok notices my distraction
"Kael, focus. You're here to have fun."
I force a smile, shaking off my thoughts.
"Sorry, Marrok. Lead the way."
The evening unfolds in a blur of laughter, music, and introductions. I dance with a lovely young woman named Sophia, her smile radiant as we twirl across the dance floor.
As the night wears on, Marrok's words echo in my mind.
"No strings attached, just enjoy yourself." Perhaps I should take his advice.
Sophia's laughter echoes through the dance hall, her eyes sparkling as we spin to the music. I find myself lost in the rhythm, my worries momentarily forgotten.
As the song ends, Marrok approaches, a knowing glint in his eye.
"Enjoying yourself, Kael?"
I nod, smiling.
"Sophia's charming."
Marrok chuckles.
"I thought you two would hit it off. Shall I introduce you to more of our pack's lovely ladies?"
I hesitate, unsure if I'm ready to move on. But Marrok's enthusiasm is infectious, and I find myself agreeing.
The night becomes a whirlwind of introductions, dances, and laughter. I meet Emily, a shy but talented musician; Rachel, a vibrant and outgoing pack member; and Lily, a soft-spoken beauty with a quick wit.
Each woman captivates me in her own way, yet my mind keeps drifting back to Rue. I push the thoughts aside, determined to enjoy the evening.
As the clock strikes midnight, Marrok raises his glass.
"To new alliances and lasting friendships!"
The room erupts in cheers, and I join in, clinking my glass against Marrok's.
The music resumes, and Sophia reclaims my attention. We dance under the sparkling chandeliers, lost in the magic of the night.
But as the evening wears on, I begin to feel a pang of restlessness. The noise, the laughter, the endless introductions it's all starting to overwhelm me.
I glance around, searching for an escape. That's when I see a girl standing alone dressed in a silver she's standing by the window and the soft light casts an ethereal glow around her.
She's a woman I haven't met yet. Her jet black hair cascades down her back, and her emerald green eyes sparkle in the dim light.
A spark of interest ignites within me. Who is she?
Before I can ponder further, Sophia spins me around, laughing.
"Kael, dance with me!"
I smile, returning my focus to the lovely woman in my arms. We dance together for some minutes before I excuse my self and walk over to marrok.
As the music swells, I find myself glancing back at the mysterious woman. She's still standing alone, her eyes scanning the room.
Marrok notices my gaze.
"Ah, you've spotted Ava," he says with a smile.
"She's one of our pack's finest."
"I'd love to meet her." I say, my eyes locked on Ava.
Marrok chuckles.
"I'll introduce you."
He leads me to Ava, and we exchange pleasantries. Ava's smile is radiant, and her laughter is music to my ears.
"Would you like to dance?" I ask, offering my hand.
Ava nods, and we glide across the dance floor. Her emerald eyes sparkle, and her jet black hair flows like silk.
As we dance, I attempt to shake off thoughts of Rue. But her image lingers, flashing in my mind like a ghost, why can't I get over her.
Frustrated, I focus on Ava. Her laughter, her smile, her captivating presence.
"I'm having a wonderful time." Ava says, her voice husky.
"Me too." I reply, my voice low.
As the music slows, I lean in, my lips brushing against Ava's ear. "Would you like to join me in my quarters?"
Ava's eyes lock onto mine, and she nods.
I lead her to Marrok, who raises an eyebrow.
"Leaving so soon, Kael?"
"I think I've found someone to keep me company," I say, smiling.
Marrok chuckles, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"Very well. Enjoy your evening."
We exchange goodbyes, and I lead Ava out to the car. Thomas opens the door, his expression neutral.
As we drive away from the ballroom, Ava's hand finds mine. I glance at her, my heart pounding.
But Rue's image still lingers, refusing to be extinguished.
Thomas's voice breaks the silence.
"Alpha, we're approaching the mansion."
I nod, my thoughts racing.
As we step out of the car, Ava's eyes sparkle in the moonlight. I take her hand, leading her to my quarters.
We enter my quarters, and I offer Ava a seat. She chooses the bed, her emerald eyes sparkling as she smooths out her dress.
"Can I get you a drink?" I ask, attempting to shake off the lingering thoughts of Rue.
"Champagne would be lovely." Ava replies, her voice husky.
I use the intercom to order the drink, and soon, a maid knocks on the door. I take the champagne and glasses from her and close the door.
Ava's eyes light up as I hand her a glass.
"To a wonderful night." she says, clinking her glass against mine.
We sip our champagne, and I put on some soft music. Ava sets her glass aside, and we begin to dance, our bodies swaying to the rhythm.
But despite Ava's captivating presence, Rue's image refuses to fade. I try to push her out of my mind, focusing on Ava's smile, her laughter, her radiant beauty.
Frustrated, I drink more, hoping to drown out the thoughts of Rue. But the alcohol only seems to make her presence stronger.
Ava notices my distraction and pulls me closer.
"Kael, are you okay?" she asks, her voice soft.
I nod, attempting to shake off my thoughts. I lean in, kissing Ava deeply.
She responds enthusiastically, taking my hand and leading me to the bed.
But as things progress, I become increasingly frustrated. Rue's image lingers, refusing to be extinguished.
Ava senses my reluctance and pauses.
"Kael, what's wrong?"
I try to brush it off. "Nothing, just nervous."
Ava's eyes narrow. "You're thinking of someone else, aren't you?"
I hesitate, unsure how to respond.
Ava's expression turns cold.
"I've wasted my time, haven't I?"
She gets up from the bed, arranging her clothes.
"I think it's time I left." She says her voice icy.
"I'm sorry I really tried that's all you don't have to leave,Ava, please," I say, reaching out to her.
But she brushes off my hand, her eyes flashing with anger.
"Save it, Kael. You've made ut clear you don't want me."
I take a step forward, desperate to convince her to stay i pull her closes to me but she pushes me off.
"Try harder," she snaps, her voice cutting.
"Or better yet, try with someone else."
Ava strides toward the door, her heels clicking on the floor.
"Ava, wait." I plead, but she's already out the door, slamming it shut behind her.
I stand there, frozen, unsure how to respond.
I realize too late that I've let my feelings for Rue ruin what could have been a beautiful night with Ava but that doesn't really matter I just need rue out of my mind and ava may have been my only chance.
But she's already out the door, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Rue's image lingers.
