Chapter 9
Damon’s POV
She hates me. My mate hates me. Those were the thoughts creeping through my mind as I entered my room. I saw it in her face, and the tone she spoke to me with. Maybe it wasn’t just hatred, she was afraid of me.
My heart sank at the thought of that, and I felt the sadness from my wolf get to me. The way she looked at me as she said those words earlier, got me in a terrible mood. Worst still, it made me feel guilty, like it was my fault she didn’t want me.
“Alpha, you sent for me?” A voice called from the other end of the room. I turned to see Dylan standing there with a concerned expression on his face. I didn’t even hear him enter.
“You didn’t knock.” I told him icily, putting away the book I had been trying to read, but kept drifting off in thoughts.
Dylan looked from me to the door, and then back at me again, his eyes deepening with concern.
“Alpha, I knocked over 5 times, but there was no response.” He replied, his eyes scanning my face in a discomforting manner. “Are you alright?” He asked, still not moving.
I sighed deeply, remembering why I had called him in the first place. “Did you go to Eve today?” I tried to keep my tone even, but that was impossible, given the current state I was in.
Dylan face failed. “Alpha, I……………. yes, I tried to………”
I scoffed, “What did you say to her that made her that upset?” I half glared at him, and when I saw him open and close his mind, his face falling, I realized that he had indeed said something bad to her.
My anger grew instantly, “Dylan, what did you say to my mate?”
“I’m sorry Alpha, I didn’t mean to threaten her. I was just……… I was just concerned. I needed to make sure that she wasn’t going to be a tool that will be used against you.” He replied quickly, his eyes begging for me to believe him.
But how could I, he threatened the future Luna, my mate. I stood up, towering over him as I glared down at him, hating how his face held tenderness, as though he was trying to soften my rage.
“You threatened the Luna Dylan, do you expect me to take that lightly?” I asked him furiously, trying to restrain myself from strangling him.
“I apologize Alpha. That was a wrong move, which I deeply regret.” He apologized swiftly, taking a step back with every step I took closer to him.
I moved quickly, grabbing his collar and hulling him against the wall. I gritted my teeth as I pinned him to the wall, my fangs spouting out as my wolf tried desperately to take over and deal with him.
“Alpha……” He said breathlessly. “I apologize.”
“You will treat her with the respect she deserves as your soon to be Luna. You or anyone else is not allowed to look down on her or threaten her. Have I made myself clear?” I asked coldly, and he quickly nodded.
It was only then that I let him go, my fangs retreating, since my wolf was already satisfied with us defending our mate. I looked at Dylan who was struggling to regain his breathing, and felt a little sorry for how roughly I treated him.
I walked back to my seat, opening a bottle of champaign and pouring it into a glass. I picked up the glass after it was half filled, and then walked to him and handed it over to him.
His eyes widened, and he looked at me with a questioning gaze. But when I didn’t respond and simply held out the glass to him, he took the glass and drowned the entire content.
I slowly took the glass from him afterwards. He looked calm in a way that got me even curious. Dylan had always been very loyal to me, and maybe that was why it was hard for me to believe he threatened her.
“Why…….. did you threaten her?” I finally asked as I swayed the glass in my hand, while looking at him seriously.
His face fell, and that look of regret took over his features. “I was wrong Alpha, I didn’t even know what I was thinking. I just didn’t want you to fall into any trouble here, and I thought maybe she…………..” He trailed off and shrugged.
He didn’t need to finish his words, and yet somehow, I understood exactly what he meant. My chest tightened at the thought of what he wanted to say. The thought of my past experience. He was only being careful so I don’t get hurt again, or even worse be in danger.
Just when I opened my mouth to retort, a knock came on the door, jerking both of us into reality. I turned to the door, anger surging through me at the person who had dared interrupt our discussion.
“Who is there?” I asked hardly, the irritation still evident in my voice. I hated it when someone disrupted by discussion unless for a very important purpose.
An unfamiliar male voice came from outside the door. “Greetings Alpha. Your brother Alpha Morgan requests your presence at the royal quarters.” He said simply.
I froze. My hands slowly balled into fists at the mention of my brother’s name. Dylan looked at me and then responded. “Alright, tell the Alpha we will be there.”
I didn’t trust myself to respond without sounding harsher than I already feel, and so I felt a lot happy that he had answered in my stead. We both listened to the footsteps of the messenger disappear along the stairwell, until we were left with the silence.
I settled back into my seat, the anger spreading through me, until Dylan spoke hastily.
“Alpha, you need to go see him.” His voice came softly, bringing me out of my daze position.
I sighed tiredly, rubbing my temples. I didn’t want to see his face, that was for sure. Even at the damned party he threw to welcome me, I did my best to avoid him. I wasn’t good at hiding my emotions, at least I am sure I can never be a pro as he is; and so I tried my best to avoid him in every way possible.
“Alpha?”
“Alright Dylan, we shall go.”
