Chapter 294 THE MEMORY ANTONIO FEARED

Chapter 294 THE MEMORY ANTONIO FEARED
POV: Zuri

I stare at the photograph.

My mother.

Dr. Voss.

Together.

The date is impossible.

It was taken after the day we were told she died.

My fingers begin to shake.

“What memory was worth all of this?”

Nobody answers.

Then something inside my mind opens.

Not a picture.

Not a place.

A voice.

My own voice.

Small.

Afraid.

Whispering through the darkness.

“I know where Father keeps everything.”

I gasp.

Amani catches my arm.

“Zuri?”

I look at him.

“I remember.”

The memory comes slowly.

Then all at once.

I am a child again.

Standing inside the Moretti estate.

The hallway is dark.

I hear voices coming from behind a door.

Father.

Marco.

My mother.

Marco is arguing with Antonio.

“You can't keep doing this.”

Father's voice is cold.

“You don't understand what you're talking about.”

I move closer.

The door is slightly open.

I look inside.

There are papers everywhere.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

Numbers.

Names.

I don't understand what I'm seeing.

But my mother does.

Her face changes when she sees me.

“Zuri?”

I step into the room.

“What is all this?”

Nobody answers.

I look at one of the documents.

There are bank accounts.

Another has names.

Another has photographs of men I don't recognize.

Then I see something on the desk.

A thick black ledger.

My fingers touch the cover.

My mother rushes toward me.

“No.”

She pulls me away.

“Don't touch that.”

“Why?”

She looks toward Antonio.

Because she is afraid.

And I have never seen my mother afraid of anything before.

The memory changes.

My mother is kneeling in front of me.

Marco stands beside her.

She holds my face between her hands.

“Listen to me.”

Her voice is shaking.

“You cannot tell Father what you saw.”

I nod.

“What is in the book?”

She looks at Marco.

Then back at me.

“Everything.”

I don't understand.

But I remember her next words.

“People.”

“Money.”

“Places.”

“Names.”

Her eyes fill with tears.

“If your father finds out you remember it...”

She stops.

She doesn't finish.

She doesn't have to.

I understand.

He will come for me.

I open my eyes.

I'm back in the medical room.

Amani is beside me.

Marco stands across the room.

Evelyn is staring at me.

“What did you remember?” she asks.

I look at them.

“The ledger.”

Marco slowly nods.

“The ledger was real.”

I stare at him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

“Everything Father built.”

He takes a breath.

“His accounts.”

“His businesses.”

“His safehouses.”

“His people.”

My stomach turns.

“Who were the people?”

Marco looks at Evelyn.

“Officials.”

“Police.”

“Businessmen.”

“Criminal organizations.”

“Anyone who helped Antonio build his empire.”

Evelyn's face tightens.

“That's why the Silver Wolf network was involved.”

Marco nods.

“There was another section.”

I already know the answer will hurt.

“What section?”

He says it quietly.

“Silver Wolf.”

My heart stops.

My mother.

The Crows.

The old network.

The people who disappeared.

The people Antonio hunted.

It was all connected.

The ledger wasn't simply evidence of Antonio's money.

It was a map of his entire empire.

And the final section connected him to the Silver Wolf network.

I look at the photograph of my mother and Voss.

“She knew.”

Marco nods.

“She knew what Father was doing.”

“And she tried to stop him.”

“Yes.”

I close my eyes.

Suddenly I understand why Antonio was so afraid of my memories.

I hadn't just seen a book.

I'd seen the blueprint of his empire.

Evelyn takes the documents from the desk.

She studies them carefully.

Then her eyes widen.

“There's something else.”

I look at her.

“What?”

She points to several notes in the file.

“Your memory.”

I don't understand.

She explains.

“You remembered things differently from most people.”

Marco nods.

“Mother used to say Zuri never forgot anything.”

I stare at him.

Evelyn continues.

“You didn't just see the ledger.”

“You memorized parts of it.”

I shake my head.

“I was a child.”

“Exactly.”

She looks at me.

“You didn't understand what you were seeing. But your mind recorded it.”

My stomach twists.

“So Father couldn't destroy the evidence.”

“No.”

“He had to destroy my memory of it.”

Evelyn nods.

“He needed you to forget the ledger existed.”

Everything suddenly makes sense.

The procedures.

The new identity.

The years of suppression.

Every time a memory surfaced...

Antonio made sure it disappeared again.

He wasn't afraid of what I knew.

He was afraid of what I could remember.

I whisper,

“He was afraid of me.”

Amani looks at me.

“Yes.”

For the first time...

I believe it.

I close my eyes.

The silver key.

I remember my mother placing it in my hand.

“Only you can open it.”

I reach into my pocket.

Nothing.

Then I look at the silver ring Amani gave me months ago.

The ring I've carried through everything.

The strange ring that always seemed familiar.

I turn it over.

There.

A tiny crack.

I stare at it.

“Amani.”

He takes the ring.

“What?”

“Look.”

He examines it.

Something is hidden inside the crack.

He carefully removes it.

A tiny piece of folded paper falls into his hand.

He opens it.

Three words.

FOLLOW THE WOLF.

My breath catches.

Those words.

My mother's warning.

The same words from the memory.

I take the paper.

“It's connected.”

Evelyn nods.

“To the Silver Wolf.”

I look toward the door.

Then toward the files.

The wolf symbol wasn't just a mark.

It was a direction.

I turn toward Marco.

“You knew about the ring.”

His eyes lower.

“Yes.”

My anger returns.

“You knew?”

“I knew Mother gave you something.”

“What?”

“I never knew what.”

“You searched for it?”

“For years.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Marco's expression breaks.

“Because I thought remembering it would bring everything back.”

I stare at him.

“You were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Afraid of me remembering?”

“Afraid of what would happen to you if you remembered too much too quickly.”

I look away.

For years, I thought Marco had betrayed me.

Now I'm beginning to understand.

He had been afraid.

Not of losing the ledger.

Not of Antonio.

Of losing me again.

I don't forgive him.

Not completely.

But the hatred inside me weakens.

He wasn't working for Father.

He was running from him.

Evelyn studies the wolf symbol.

Then she looks at the coordinates from the cemetery.

She compares them with the markings in the files.

Her eyes widen.

“These aren't just symbols.”

Amani steps closer.

“What are they?”

“Directions.”

She points to the wolf.

“The position of the wolf changes depending on where it's carved.”

I look at the photograph from the cemetery.

“The one on the stone.”

Evelyn nods.

“It points north.”

She checks another mark.

Then another.

Finally, she looks at Marco.

“Do you recognize this location?”

Marco's face changes.

“Yes.”

Amani waits.

Marco answers quietly.

“The old Silver Wolf safehouse.”

Silence.

Amani asks,

“Is it still standing?”

Marco looks toward the mountains.

“If Antonio hasn't found it.”

I stare at the wolf symbol.

Maybe the ledger is there.

Maybe the box.

Maybe answers about my mother.

Maybe the truth I've been searching for all these years.

Amani moves beside me.

“We're going.”

I nod.

“We are.”

Before we leave...

I stand outside the estate.

The sky is beginning to brighten.

But I feel like I'm walking deeper into the dark.

Amani comes to stand beside me.

“I’m scared.”

He looks at me.

“Of the safehouse?”

“No.”

I look at my hands.

“Of remembering everything.”

He stays quiet.

“What if I become someone else?”

“You won't.”

“What if I do?”

He takes my hand.

“You don't have to become the person you were before.”

I look at him.

“What if they're both me?”

He squeezes my fingers.

“Then we'll meet both of you.”

A small smile touches my lips.

For the first time...

I don't feel like I'm losing myself.

Maybe I'm finding myself.

We prepare to leave.

Ghost checks the motorcycles.

Rex loads the weapons.

Marco studies the map.

Evelyn folds the files.

Then the radio activates.

Everyone freezes.

No voice.

Only coordinates.

Evelyn reaches for it.

She studies the numbers.

Her face changes.

I notice immediately.

“What?”

She doesn't answer.

“What is it?”

She looks at me.

“That's not the Silver Wolf safehouse.”

My heart drops.

“Then what is it?”

Evelyn slowly turns the screen toward us.

Her voice is barely a whisper.

“It's where Dr. Voss took your mother after the fire.”

Silence.

Marco steps forward.

“How is that possible?”

The radio screen changes.

A message appears.

VOSS LEFT SOMETHING FOR ZURI.

My heart pounds.

Then another line appears.

COME ALONE.

Nobody speaks.

Amani looks at me.

I look at him.

There is no question in my mind.

I take his hand.

“I know what it says.”

He nods.

“And?”

I look at the coordinates.

“We're going.”

Marco looks at me.

“Zuri—”

I shake my head.

“I'm not going alone.”

Amani steps beside me.

“Neither are you.”

The screen remains lit.

COME ALONE.

But whoever sent the message doesn't know one thing.

I stopped being alone a long time ago.
