Chapter 26 The Baby Who Didn't Cry
Chapter 26 The Baby Who Didn't Cry
Serena
She didn’t cry when she was born. She watched.
I didn’t feel the room anymore.
Just… warmth.
I turned my head.
Mira was placing her in my arms.
My baby.
Her body was tiny, swaddled in soft gray cloth. But her presence filled the room like thunder.
I stared into her strange, knowing eyes.
Eyes wide open. Silent. Still. Not a single sound.
My baby girl stared up at me, her stormy gray eyes unblinking.
She didn’t flinch. She didn’t scream. No sob, no cough, not even a gasp.
Just… silence.
“What are you?” I whispered, stroking a curl of black hair on her forehead.
The baby blinked once.
Then smiled.
And whispered again—
“Alive.”
And this time…
She looked at me like she knew exactly what that meant.
Mira and Dr.Yara are still here.
The alarms had stopped. The lights returned to their usual dim blue.
My whole body ached, my mind hazy and my soul cracked open, but I could only look at her.
"She’s not crying," I whispered.
Mira nodded slowly, her brows furrowed. "She’s breathing. Vitals stable. Everything’s... functioning."
Dr. Yara leaned in, running a hand-held scanner over the baby's chest. It beeped, paused, and beeped again. Her face went pale. "Her energy levels are off the charts. It’s like… she’s cycling through frequencies I’ve never even seen before."
I clutched the baby tighter to my chest. She was warm. Her tiny hands curled against my skin. And still, she watched me. Not like a newborn. Like something… aware.
"Can I hold her?" Xavier’s voice cut gently through the air.
I looked up. He stood beside me now, eyes softer than I’d ever seen them. Blood stained his sleeve, and his blade was still strapped to his back, humming lowly.
He had fought for her. For me.
For this moment.
I nodded.
Xavier lifted her carefully from my arms, cradling her like she was made of sunlight and thunder.
"Hey, little one," he said, and I swear, his voice trembled. "You gave your mama quite a time."
The baby blinked slowly.
Then reached up, tiny fingers pressing to his chest like she recognized his heartbeat.
Mira cleared her throat. "We need to run a blood test. That kind of energy output... we need to know exactly what we’re dealing with."
Xavier nodded. "Do it."
He sat beside me, letting her rest between us on a nest of soft blankets and thick Reaper cloth.
I held her tiny foot while Mira pricked her heel.
Not a sound.
Not a cry.
I stared at her face. The smooth skin. The full lips. The eyes that looked older than time.
She knows more than I do.
That thought chilled me.
"What do we name her?" Xavier asked, eyes still on her.
I swallowed. "I don’t know. She hasn’t… told me yet."
It sounded stupid out loud. But it felt right.
As if this child would choose her own name.
Sr. Yara tapped the screen on the med panel. "Got it. Blood results are in."
Mira and Xavier stood.
"What are we looking at?" he asked.
Dr. Yara bit her lip. "She has Serena's bloodline. Strong maternal DNA. She also has markers from the triplets. All three."
My heart skipped. "What does that mean?"
"It means their essence left a permanent mark. She’s a tri-hybrid. Wolf, human, and… whatever Xavier is."
"Reaper," he said quietly.
"That’s the thing," Dr.Yara continued, eyes widening. "It’s not just Reaper in her. There’s something older. Something buried deep. I found sigils in her blood cells, not genetic. Magical. Etched. Like prophecy markers."
Mira frowned. "That can’t be. Only the Oracle of Shadows had that kind of blood memory."
"Exactly. And she vanished decades ago."
Xavier took a slow step back from the table. He looked down at the baby, who was now looking at him.
"Xavier?" I said, sitting up straighter.
"I had a dream yesterday, before she was born," he said, voice rough. "I thought it was just a nightmare. But it felt real. I was standing in a cave. There were voices. A woman with eyes like stars. She said the vessel was returning."
I felt my throat go dry.
The baby turned her head and smiled.
And then...
Her eyes changed.
Just for a second.
From gray… to pure obsidian shot through with flickers of white flame.
I gasped.
Mira backed up. "No. No way. Those are the Oracle’s eyes. The seer of shadows. The one who disappeared during the Collapse."
Dr.Yara whispered, "She’s not just alive. She’s returned."
Xavier reached forward, one hand trembling as he touched the baby’s cheek. His breath caught in his throat.
"Who are you?" he whispered.
The baby blinked.
Then...
Her lips moved.
Not a sound came out.
But I heard the word.
In my mind.
In my bones.
"The beginning."
