Chapter 14 What Remains
Chapter 14 What Remains
RONAN POV
I sign the contract.
The moment my bloody fingerprint touches the paper, the world explodes into agony. Black fire consumes me from the inside out, burning away everything that makes me human.
I try to scream Iris's name, but the Entity is already filling the empty spaces where my emotions used to be.
Give in, it whispers. Let me take the pain. Let me take the guilt. Let me take the love that's destroying you.
And God help me, I do.
The fire stops. The pain vanishes. I open my eyes.
Everything looks different. Clearer. Sharper. I can see things I couldn't before—the darkness inside every person in this room. Marcus's years of theft and lies. The officers' prejudices and cruelties. Captain Cross's murders disguised as justified shootings.
Everyone is guilty of something.
Everyone except Iris.
I turn to look at her. She's reaching for the contract, tears streaming down her face, about to damn herself to save Marcus.
No.
That's the last thought I have that's truly mine. The last choice I make before the Entity takes full control.
I won't let her fall.
The knife in my hand—I was supposed to kill Marcus with it. The Entity wants me to. I can feel the command burning through me like an electric current.
But there's something else. A tiny piece of myself that the Entity hasn't consumed yet. A fragment of the man who loved Iris Hale for fifteen years.
And that fragment fights back.
I turn the knife away from Marcus.
And drive it into my own chest.
The Entity shrieks inside my mind. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
"Saving her," I gasp. Blood pours from the wound. "You can't... have her... if I'm dead. Contract... broken."
The Entity's presence starts to fade, pulled back by the rules of its own dark magic. A contract holder who dies voids all bargains. I learned that from my research years ago, back when I still thought I could outsmart it.
I couldn't outsmart it. But I can still cheat it out of the one thing it wants most.
Iris.
"RONAN!" She's screaming, running toward me. Officers are yelling. Marcus is shouting for an ambulance.
I collapse. The floor is cold. Red spreads across my shirt.
Iris drops to her knees beside me, pressing her hands against the wound. "No, no, no! Stay with me! Don't you dare die!"
I try to smile. Not sure if I manage it. "Had to... stop it from... taking you."
"You idiot!" She's crying so hard she can barely speak. "I would've signed! I would've saved Marcus! Now you're dying for nothing!"
"Not nothing." I touch her face with a shaking hand. "You're still... good. Still... Iris. Worth it."
The Entity's form—Elena's destroyed body—is collapsing into smoke. Without a contract holder, it has no anchor to this world. It's being pulled back to whatever hell it came from.
"This isn't over," it hisses as it fades. "There will be others. Other broken souls seeking justice. Other Ronans. Other Irises. I'm patient. I'm eternal. I'll wait."
Then it's gone.
Just me, bleeding out on Iris's office floor, while the woman I love begs me not to die.
"Why?" she sobs. "Why would you do this?"
"Because..." The words are getting harder. "Loved you. Real. Not the... Entity. Me. Always... me."
Everything's getting dark. Fuzzy. I can feel myself slipping away.
But there's something I need to tell her first. Something important.
"Iris... listen..."
She leans close, her ear by my lips.
"The seventeen victims," I whisper. "Guilty. All of them. I researched... for years. Never... killed an innocent. Elena lied. Check the... files. Real files. Hidden in... my apartment. Proof."
Her eyes go wide. "What?"
"Evidence. Real evidence. Against all of them." I cough. Blood on my lips. "Wanted you... to know. Not a monster. Just... broken. Trying to... fix things."
"Ronan, please—"
"Desk drawer. My apartment. Key code... your birthday." I'm fading fast now. "Read them. You'll understand. I never... wanted you to... become me. Just wanted... you to see... system is broken. We... deserved better."
My hand falls from her face.
"Ronan? RONAN!"
Her voice sounds so far away now.
The last thing I see is her face. Beautiful. Broken. Free.
Then darkness.
I wake up to beeping machines and white walls.
Hospital. I'm alive.
How am I alive?
"You're awake." A nurse appears. "You're very lucky, Dr. Ashford. The knife missed your heart by two centimeters. You lost a lot of blood, but you'll survive."
Survive.
The Entity is gone. I can feel its absence like a missing tooth. No whispers in my mind. No dark commands. Just... silence.
I'm free.
But at what cost?
The nurse leaves. Two police officers take her place outside my door. Guarding me. Or guarding everyone else from me.
I killed seventeen people. Even if they were guilty, even if I have proof, I'm still a murderer. Iris knows that now. The whole department knows.
There's no future where I don't go to prison.
Unless—
The door opens. Not a nurse. Not a cop.
Iris.
She looks exhausted. Red-eyed from crying. But she's carrying a box. My box. The one from my apartment.
"I read them," she says quietly. "All seventeen files. Every piece of evidence you collected. Every crime you documented."
She sets the box on the chair beside my bed.
"They were all guilty," she continues. "Every single one. The hedge fund manager. The trafficking ring leader. The corrupt judge. All of them. You didn't lie about that."
Hope flickers in my chest. "Iris—"
"But you still killed them." Her voice hardens. "You still took seventeen lives. You still played God. And you manipulated me for months. Made me fall in love with you while hiding what you were."
The hope dies.
"I know," I whisper. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't fix this." She moves toward the door. "You're going to prison, Ronan. For a long time. Maybe forever. And I'm going to be the one who testifies against you."
She opens the door.
Then stops.
"But there's something you need to know first," she says without turning around. "Something I found in your files. Something that changes everything."
My heart pounds. "What?"
"Victim number seventeen. The hedge fund manager. You killed him five days ago, right?"
"Yes."
"Wrong." She finally turns to face me. Her expression is unreadable. "According to the coroner's report I just reviewed—the real report, not the one the Entity manipulated—he died six days ago. When you were with me. At my apartment. All night."
The room spins.
"That's impossible. I remember killing him. I remember—"
"False memories. The Entity controlled you, remember? Made you think you were choosing the victims. Choosing the kills." She steps closer. "I had the tech team analyze every piece of evidence from all seventeen crime scenes. Every single one has been contaminated with the same supernatural signature we found on Elena's body."
She pulls out a report.
"You didn't kill anyone, Ronan. The Entity did. Using your hands, your face, your reputation. But erasing your real memories and replacing them with fake ones. You were a puppet. A weapon. Not a murderer."
I can't breathe.
"That means—"
"That means legally, you're a victim. Not a criminal." She pauses. "The DA is still deciding whether to press charges. But based on the psychiatric evaluation and the supernatural evidence—"
The door bursts open.
Captain Cross storms in, face red with fury.
"Detective Hale, step away from the prisoner!"
"He's not a prisoner," Iris says calmly. "He's a victim of supernatural manipulation. The charges are being dropped."
"Like hell they are!" Cross pulls out her gun. "I don't care what your reports say. This man confessed to seventeen murders. He's not walking free!"
She points the gun at me.
At my chest.
Where I'm defenseless and trapped in a hospital bed.
"Captain, put the gun down!" Iris moves between us. "This is—"
"Get out of the way, Detective. That's an order!"
Iris doesn't move.
Cross's finger tightens on the trigger.
And I realize the horrible truth: Captain Cross is dirty. She's one of the corrupt ones I researched. And she knows I have evidence against her hidden somewhere.
She's not here to arrest me.
She's here to silence me.
"Iris, run—" I start to say.
Cross fires.
