Chapter 465

Chapter 465
Trevor Dourado.

Trevor’s eyes shifted toward the sultan with the appraising look of someone gauging distance, orientation, and all the other parameters between their position and the element to be avoided; and in that gaze was the reading of someone who had learned to make such assessments out of necessity, and thus performed them with the competence of one who had practiced.

"Because he might recognize us." The phrase arrived with that quality of truths spoken in a low voice that are heavier than the low voice suggests, that there was in it the full implication of a recognition that would be the most significant complication that night could produce within a situation that already had enough complications, and there was in the recognition the specific possibility that twenty years and the severing of ties would be remembered with the quality of memories that certain types of men maintain with that fidelity of someone who never needed an additional reason to remember what they remember.

Arthur sat with that thought.

And in remaining with that, there was the quality of Arthur arriving at the state that existed after receiving information that reorganized the situation, having passed through the initial impact and having arrived at the side where the impact had been processed and where what existed was the cold clarity of someone who needed to act within a new set of parameters.

Arthur’s eyes swept the room.

With the kind of reading that comes from mapping a space that had been mapped before but now needs to be remapped with an additional layer of information about what that space contained that the previous reading hadn't included, that there was in the albino sultan with the tiger beside him and with the gold and with the presence that existed in the center of that environment an element that had become a different element after two sentences from Trevor than it had been before them.

Twenty years.

The timescale of that time existed as a context for everything that had been said; there was a history with that man that was long enough for both sides of it to have had time to develop a perspective on what had happened between them that was, by definition, different depending on which side one was on.

There was the side where Arthur had severed ties.

And there was another side, the side from whom the ties had been severed. And the other side was in a room at a distance that had been comfortable when they had arrived, and which now existed with a completely different quality, where there was a real possibility that that distance could become smaller for whatever reason existed within the logic of an event where both were present as guests of the same host.

Trevor continued to size up the room.

With the attentiveness of someone constructing a mental map of where the element to be avoided was located and what paths within the space maintained the greatest possible distance from that element, the exercise demonstrated the competence of someone who had performed that type of exercise under sufficiently varied conditions so that the version performed that night, even in an environment not designed for that function, was executed with the efficiency the situation required.

"Stay close to me." Trevor's words came across with that quality of instruction that was more like instructions than suggestions than guidance; they carried the direction of someone who had assumed the role of navigating within that new set of parameters "But not so close that it looks like we're hiding."

Arthur processed that.

There was a precision in Trevor's instruction that he recognized as Trevor's specific precision for situations that demanded that kind of navigation, which he had learned over enough time working together that when Trevor arrived at an instruction of that quality, the instruction had been considered before being given and therefore there was reason within it that existed before being explained.

"And Ariel?" Arthur asked, and there was in the question the quality of someone who had received the new information and was now checking how that information affected the other pieces within the same space, who was aware that there were other people in that night besides the two who were having that conversation.

Trevor pondered that for a moment.

"Ariel is with N'zar." The answer came with that brevity of Trevor's for statements that are sufficient before any elaboration. "And N'zar has the relationship he has with the Sultan." A pause. "She's safer than we are at this moment."

The fact that the woman being protected by the enemy was—at that specific moment and within that specific event—in a position that was operationally safer than that of the two men trying to resolve the situation.

Arthur glanced toward Ariel and N'zar.

He looked with the kind of gaze one uses to check the state of something that matters from a distance—a distance not of one's own choosing, yet one that existed nonetheless due to circumstances established before any choice regarding those circumstances could even be made.

Then he turned his eyes to the Sultan.

It was there, with the albino tiger and the gold and the presence that existed with that quality of centers that environments develop around certain people when those people have that specific dimension of power that causes the space around them to organize itself in their function before any instruction is given.

Twenty years.

And the question that lay beneath everything that had been said, a question Trevor hadn't asked and Arthur hadn't asked, but which still existed with that presence of questions that don't need to be formulated to be answered, was whether twenty years were enough for a man like the Sultan of the East, in an environment like that, not to recognize a face he had known before the cut.

The answer to that question lay somewhere within the unfolding night.

And they had to ensure the answer didn't arrive in the way it potentially could.

"We had a drink," Trevor said, and there was in the saying the quality of conclusion to a conversation that had reached the point where what needed to be said had been said and where what needed to be done was next. "And we stay where we stay."

Arthur nodded.

With the quality of Arthur's assent when he had reached a state of clarity within a complex situation, and that assent was the confirmation that he had arrived and was ready to exist within what existed, with what was there.

And then they moved.

With the nonchalance of guests who had gone to get a drink and were returning to the party, possessing the kind of presence that comes from people who are exactly where they should be for reasons that don't need explaining to anyone.

The Sultan was at the center, and they existed on the periphery.
