🕯️ Chapter Eleven — The Shape of the Truth
🕯️ Chapter Eleven — The Shape of the Truth
Night came early.
The estate slept, but Bella did not.
Or maybe it only felt that way because Bella had stopped trusting light.
It was quiet—too quiet, like it was holding its breath along with her.
She lay awake, staring at the ceiling as moonlight carved pale fractures across the plaster, her thoughts spiralling in quiet chaos. Every time she closed her eyes, memories hovered just beyond reach ---- like fingers brushing the surface of water before disappearing.
She lifted her hand.
The necklace rested against her collarbone.
The ring-shaped pendant.
She didn’t remember putting it on.
Her fingers curled around it instinctively, pulse quickening the moment metal met skin. A strange warmth spread through her chest ---- unnatural, almost chemical, like a pulse answering another.
On my terms, she told herself.
If the memories wanted her, they could come.
Bella swung her legs off the bed and stood, ignoring the dizziness that followed. She crossed to the mirror. Her reflection stared back—sharp-eyed, pale, haunted.
“I’m not afraid,” she whispered to the empty room.
That was a lie.
“Show me,” she whispered.
On my terms, she thought.
The room responded.
Her vision narrowed.
Her ears rang.
Then----
A door slammed.
Footsteps echoed----fast, desperate.
Her name screamed with terror wrapped around it.
She gasped, clutching the edge of the dresser as images tore through her like broken glass.
A corridor soaked as she signed something.
A ring sliding onto her finger---this ring.
A voice, low and wrecked:
“You’re my wife. No matter what you remember.”
Her knees buckled.
Bella collapsed onto the floor, breath coming in jagged pulls as pain bloomed behind her eyes. It wasn’t just memory---it was loss. Crushing. Violent. Devastating.
She didn’t scream.
She bit down on it.
When the storm passed, she lay there trembling, tears slipping silently into her hair.
“I’m not crazy,” she whispered.
But someone had made her forget.
She lay back slowly, staring at the ceiling, forcing herself not to resist when the dizziness crept in. The doctor’s warning echoed faintly in her mind—but she pushed past it.
The room dissolved.
Luca moved through the city like a shadow with purpose.
The name Ricci opened doors—but Luca preferred locks.
He sat inside a dark car across from a medical archive facility just outside Rome, fingers tapping impatiently against the steering wheel as his contact worked inside.
Minutes passed.
Then the phone vibrated.
“You were right,” the voice murmured. “Records were altered. Entire blocks missing.”
Luca’s jaw tightened. “What kind of records?”
“Neurological trauma. Long-term suppression therapy. Consent forms signed by—”
The voice cut off abruptly.
“Signed by who?” Luca snapped.
A pause.
“…Someone powerful.”
The line went dead.
Luca stared at the dark screen, adrenaline flooding his veins.
This wasn’t an affair.
This wasn’t obsession.
This was a cover-up.
And Bella was at the centre of it.
Nico sensed it before anyone told him.
A sharp, violent pull in his chest – the same one that used to wake him from nightmares soaked in blood and regret. Like a wire drawn too tight.
He was already moving when a guard intercepted him. “Sir—Bella has locked herself in.”
His blood went cold.
“Get out of my way.”
He reached her door just as a crash sounded from inside.
“Bella!” He slammed his shoulder into the wood.
Inside, the lamp lay shattered. Bella was on the floor, curled in on herself, gasping.
“No—no—stop—” she choked.
Nico dropped beside her, hands hovering, terrified to touch her and make it worse.
“Bella. Look at me,” he said urgently. “You’re here. You’re safe.”
Her eyes snapped open.
They weren’t seeing the room.
They were seeing him—but not this him.
“You promised,” she whispered, tears streaking down her temples. “You said you’d find me again.”
His heart shattered.
“I did,” he said hoarsely. “I’m here.”
Her body convulsed as another memory ripped through her.
Gunfire.
Smoke.
Blood on marble.
Her own scream echoing endlessly.
She clawed at his shirt, fingers digging in like anchors. “Don’t let me forget you,” she sobbed. “Please—don’t let me—”
Nico wrapped his arms around her despite the risk, holding her like she might disappear if he didn’t.
“I won’t,” he said into her hair. “I swear it.”
Her breathing slowed.
She sagged against him, unconscious.
Behind them, unseen, a camera lens blinked.
Luca lowered the binoculars slowly, his pulse hammering hard enough to drown out the night.
He hadn’t meant to see that.
He hadn’t expected tenderness.
Or the raw, unguarded desperation etched across Nico’s face.
“That’s not how a man looks at a stranger,” he muttered under his breath.
His fingers moved on instinct as he rewound the recording on his phone. The sound crackled softly before her voice filled the silence —
Broken.
Shaking.
Bare.
You promised.
The words hit deeper the second time.
Luca exhaled sharply, something inside him shifting, rearranging itself into something colder — and far more dangerous.
This wasn’t just a lie.
It was a conspiracy.
One built on love.
And love didn’t just make people stupid —
it made them reckless.
It made them willing to burn entire empires just to save one person.
He slipped the phone away as Nico lifted Bella into his arms, holding her with a care that looked achingly practiced. Luca turned before they noticed him, melting back into the shadows like he’d never been there at all.
But the truth followed him.
And Luca knew one thing with brutal certainty—
Whatever was coming next wouldn’t spare any of them.
An hour later, Nico stood in an underground chapel lit only by candles.
The hidden ally waited near the altar, face obscured, posture rigid with fear barely restrained.
“She triggered it herself,” Nico said. “The memories are accelerating.”
The man closed his eyes briefly, pain flickering across his features.
“She doesn’t know what she’s risking,” he murmured.
“She never did,” Nico replied.
The man stepped closer, voice urgent. “We don’t have months anymore.”
Nico stiffened. “How long?”
“Weeks,” the man said. “If she remembers everything at once—her mind won’t survive it. If she doesn’t—she’ll lose it forever.”
Silence swallowed them.
“I’ll take the damage,” Nico said finally. “Whatever it costs.”
The man’s voice broke. “She already paid once.”
Nico turned away, fists clenched. “Not again.”
They didn’t notice the shadow at the far end of the chapel.
Luca stood frozen behind a stone pillar, heart hammering.
Weeks.
She already paid once.
He didn’t know the full truth.
But he knew enough.
Bella hadn’t lost her memory by accident.
And Nico wasn’t the villain everyone thought he was.
That realization terrified him more than the lie ever had.
Back in her room, Bella stirred.
Her eyes fluttered open.
Her head throbbed—but beneath the pain was something else.
Clarity.
Not answers.
But certainty.
She whispered into the dark, voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.
“I was his.”
The words felt true.
And somewhere in the estate, as if the world itself responded—
A phone rang.
And the war for Bella’s memory officially began.
