Chapter 134

Mia's POV

We were testing the waters and it was great so far. Things moved so smoothly and it had me thinking why we had not done this sooner than later.

There were no threatening calls and messages and everything seemed to be so perfect. Almost too perfect, but I did not mind.

As long as my baby, Adrian and I were safe and were comfortable with each other, it was okay. We were okay.

He had come to me only a day after we had the talk about him leaving the Mafia and he had told them that he had already decided. He did not want to live a life without us in it and for that, he was willing to hand over everything to someone else. He was willing to let go of his life before I and the baby. He was willing to try the civilian life and live life as a normal American citizen.

I was happy about the situation. I was going to have him to myself and he was going to live for both himself and I, and most importantly, my baby was going to have a safe and secure future, one with no threats from Daddy's past.

It got me elated and I had opted to make cookies as a form of celebration to the new life.

He had declined it. Said ‘no’, on the account that he did not want me stressing so much about such little things. It had made me smile so much, I thought I would wear out my jaw.

I knew one thing though, he was not just completely going to erase the life that he had once lived. That was almost impossible, especially for a man like him. He tried to hide for as long as he could, but it was there. He still had involvements in the mafia. He would sneakily take calls. I knew they were not calls from other females. I let it slide though, because I knew, I was asking such great thing of him.

Months had passed by and the baby was going to be here anytime soon. Everything was arranged and ready to go. I lived everyday seeing Adrian's love for the growing child increase. The love he had for me radiated to the baby. He was an extension of our love and I could not have asked for more.

He was always present at the doctor's appointments. He enjoyed coming to those and on days when I did not feel like he should come, he would always insist, because according to him, the baby was his too and he could not afford to miss any moment at all.

Those moments got me riled up, but my anger dissipated in just no time.

Adrian was there throughout the journey. Always there to get me the perfect temperature of water I needed at the perfect time and to rub my feet when it was necessary.

Today was going to be a busy day. It was almost my due date and I planned on making as much side dishes as I could. That way, there would be enough of them to suit to my taste to last me a while after birth.

I moved around the kitchen, with Adrian in it, reminding me to take it easy and slower, while also assisting as much as he could, even though, he was not perfect.

While I understood him and tried to adhere to advices that stemmed from concerns, I just thought he was being too paranoid.

He probably was just nervous for the baby's arrival. It was expected though.

We waited anxiously for the D-day and finally, it was here.

I had contractions and being taught about them, I knew what they were. It did not take long for my water to break after a while, and we were on our way to the hospital, bags fully packed.

Adrian was plain on freaking out, I thought we were going to have an accident.

“You have to calm down.” I had said repeatedly.

“Calm down?! You are having a baby!” He said frantically, “Our first child!” he continued, as if to justify his freaking out or to lay emphasis on what was happening.

I laughed through the pain as the next contraction hit me.

“Ouch!” I said with the strength j could, groaning deeply.

He drove us through the gates, attempting to park in an unsafe place, simply because it was closer to the hospital front doors. I discouraged him, prompting him to be more civil.

“Oh, come on, park in the proper place. That way, you won't have anyone call you out here for this.”

I scolded.

Thankfully, he went ahead to the parking lot, but not before screaming, “get a wheelchair!” into the reception from the car.

I shook my head, smiling to myself.

I could almost say, I was lucky, but I knew we had not gotten to that point yet. We were just trying to be one little happy family.

The aides were fast and a wheelchair was brought to my side aiding my movement into the hospital. I was taken to the maternity ward as in little to no time, I was attended to.

After hours of labour, made less intense by an epidural, I was delivered of a male child.

He was so beautiful and his dad was very present to cut the cord.

It was a heartwarming moment for us both and we savoured every bit of it.

Adrian did not leave my side through out the whole process and it made my heart warm, giving me hope for the future.

I looked at him as he watched the baby and all I could see was a man who would do anything for his child.

Maybe, we could do this after all. We could actually live this life. This cute, little family Chicago life of ours. All I needed to do was to give him time and be patient enough with him, so he could be able to permanently cut off all ties.

Although the communication between Adrian and his former life was drastically reduced, I still feared for our future.
