Chapter 42
Elena narrating:
I was devastated. The way he treated me, locking me in this room as if I were just any ordinary prisoner, as if I were nothing. I truly thought we were a beautiful couple, that we would be husband and wife forever. That this marriage could become real.
After all, he was kind, affectionate, took care of me when I needed it the most. What could his flaw be? Now I know. Bipolarity and instability. On top of everything, he was aggressive.
I just let myself cry, the pain consuming my body. I was hungry, but I didn't even want to eat. He accused me of things I didn't even know what they were about. Damon was possessed, looking at me with disdain, as if I were the worst person in the world, but he was the one treating me that way. He just didn't realize the mistake he was making. But when he did, he would see what he had done.
I was already in love with him. That was undeniable. But because of his sudden change, nothing made sense to me anymore. I was so hurt, so does that mean all that love, all that affection Damon was showing, weren't true? It was all fake. Everything was intentionally pretended.
I didn't know where Damon got that madness from, I hadn't done anything at all. Probably someone was plotting against me and didn't want me to be close to Damon. When he was angry, he could be more than cruel. I just didn't quite understand why he didn't physically hurt me. He just tortured me more and more psychologically, and that hurt so much.
I remembered his hands on my body, my moans filling the room, his passionate kisses. Everything was so perfect. But it was all a pure lie. Simply.
I always dreamt of true love. Something like in good romantic movies. I never cared about money, riches, just love. I wanted to find the love I never had, and I swear I thought I was getting there with Damon, but I forgot he was just a member of the mafia. And he would never put love ahead of the mafia.
This marriage by contract was the worst mistake of my life. Even though I didn't have much of a choice, I was practically threatened. Cursed be the hour I met Damon. If I could go back in time and fix all of this. God puts people in our lives to teach us what love is, and others to teach us what pain is.
With Damon, I was learning what true pain was. And I wouldn't wish this horrible feeling on anyone. What hurt me the most was how bipolar he was, how he changed with me for no reason. It hurt so much, like a knife cutting through my heart. One day he was one way, full of love, passion, happiness, and the next he turned into a monster.
Staying here reminded me of a horrible episode from my childhood in the orphanage. The Mother wanted me to eat, but I just wasn't hungry because I was so sad that everyone had been adopted except me. In a way, it seemed like they didn't want me to be adopted, maybe on someone's orders, I don't know. So, since I didn't want to eat, she locked me in a dark room, and it was terrible. I cried so much that I got dehydrated. Orphanages are places of horrors. At least, everything I went through there wasn't good at all.
If I could, I would help all the little children who need a real home. I dream of starting a home for children, where they would always be treated well and have the best of everything. And if I found out that someone mistreated any of them, I would kill them.
Back to the present...
Now, what I needed was to focus on escaping from here, because given Damon's anger, he wouldn't let me leave.
Damon entered with food and drink. I couldn't even look at his face; I just felt resentment for everything he was putting me through. It hurt me so much. So, I said that I wanted to leave and end this damn marriage contract. As if he would ever allow that. If I were such a traitor, what would he do to me? Kill me?
"I want to go away, Damon. And end this damned contract."
"Ah, after you betrayed me. Loyalty was also part of the contract, Elena, and you broke that."
"I didn't do anything to you. Can't you understand and trust? You believe in things they made up about me; you're foolish."
"How can I trust you if all the evidence points otherwise? I tried, Elena. I tried to trust you so much that I became blind. You blinded me."
"It's you who's blind now. Can't you see all of this is false?"
He came closer to me, I was so angry I couldn't even look at his face. Damon was beside himself. I didn't recognize him; this wasn't the affectionate man I knew, not at all, it never was. I was hating him.
"Since you've done all this, even became my wife according to your plan to stab me in the back. You will be mine."
"You're crazy." I kicked him, and he took a step back.
I think he realized the mistake he was about to make and restrained himself. He stormed out, swearing and angry, maybe even at himself. I can't believe he would do that to me. Disgusting. Forgiveness can be given, but for that... I was so devastated that only tears spoke for me; my heart hurt so much it was close to a heart attack.
"Go to hell!" I shouted.
He left in fury. I hated him, for not trusting me and preferring to trust others or whatever. Someone was setting me up, and I had no idea who it was.
