Chapter 25"Caught in the Act"
Elena narrating.
After Marcos declared his feelings for me, I was completely at a loss for words. It was a delicate situation because I couldn't reciprocate his feelings in the same way. To me, Marcos was just like a brother, and seeing him frustrated by my lack of reciprocation worried me. However, I needed to be honest with him and make it clear that our feelings were not aligned.
But that strange reaction from Marcos also frightened me a bit. He seemed disturbed, perhaps even threatened by something that I couldn't fully comprehend. I decided not to mention it to Damon, as I feared it could create problems and even put Marcos' safety at risk.
Deep down, I felt lost. My life had taken an unexpected turn since I got involved with the mafia gang and married Damon under dubious circumstances. It wasn't the life I had planned, and the uncertainty of the future haunted me constantly.
Despite everything, yesterday was a pleasant day. Damon took me to the mall, and I ended up buying many new dresses and clothes, making me a bit embarrassed by the amount of things he insisted on gifting me. Each time I tried on an outfit, he would applaud and compliment me, which flattered me and uncomfortably stirred my emotions.
Damon's presence brought me a sense of peace that I couldn't explain. Even with all the shadows and secrets surrounding his life, I could see a side of him that fascinated and attracted me. He had a mysterious aura, but at the same time, it was as if he carried a heavy burden on his shoulders.
I couldn't deny that there was a connection between us, even if it was complex and confusing. Sometimes, I found myself wondering what could happen if circumstances were different, if I hadn't entered this dark world of the mafia and had met Damon in another way.
Perhaps, in an alternate reality, I could reciprocate his feelings and live a true love story free from threats. But the reality I was involved in was quite different, and I couldn't ignore the fact that my marriage to Damon was largely a convenience agreement to protect myself and my family.
However, even with all the uncertainties and doubts, I couldn't deny that something inside me was changing. Every day by Damon's side, I felt more drawn to him, yet at the same time, it was as if an internal force held me back, preventing me from following my true feelings. I felt torn between duty and desire, fear and the urge to explore what lay between us. It was as if I were trapped in a dilemma without a clear answer.
For now, I needed to maintain the facade of a devoted and loyal wife to Damon. But at the same time, I wondered what the future held for both of us. Could happiness be found amid this dark world of the mafia? Or was I doomed to live a life of lies and false appearances?
These questions haunted me every night as I lay next to Damon in bed, trying to decipher the mysteries that surrounded that enigmatic man. And no matter how much I resisted, a part of me knew that the growing feeling inside me couldn't be ignored for much longer.
Even though he had this protective shell of a lone wolf, cold, aggressive, and impatient, with me, I felt that he became someone different. Well, I'm not a savior of anyone. But I wanted to believe that Damon could indeed be a better person.
On the way back home, as the city lights passed quickly by the car window, I plunged into painful memories of the orphanage. It was a chapter of my life that I preferred to forget, but like a persistent ghost, those memories returned to haunt me from time to time.
I remembered Daiane, one of the few true friends I had in that place. She was always an amazing person, generous and willing to help others, even while carrying her traumas and disappointments. Daiane was a ray of light amidst the darkness of the orphanage, and her words of support and friendship were a refuge for me.
As much as I tried to erase some memories of those difficult times, Daiane's image remained vivid in my mind. I remember a conversation we had, where she tried to comfort me in the face of the pain of rejection from my biological parents.
"— Why are you like this, Elena? You'll miss dinner, and you know that Madre doesn't like lateness." — Daiane spoke affectionately while I lay on the bed, with my head resting on my knees.
"— I don't want to eat anything, Daiane. I don't even feel hungry. I just wanted to understand why my parents abandoned me here. I don't even know who they are or why my name is Elena." — I confided in her, sharing the pain that weighed on my heart.
"— Don't be like this, Elena." — She approached me and hugged me tenderly. — "One day, we'll get out of here together. I promise you. And we'll be very happy, if they didn't want us, it's their loss."
Those comforting words and the promise of a better life together gave me the strength to move on, even amid chaos in that place. Daiane always believed in a brighter future for us, and her friendship was one of the few things that kept me strong in the darkest moments.
However, destiny was cruel to Daiane. I remember with sadness when she was adopted by a strange couple, and the rumors that circulated in the orphanage about the abuse and mistreatment she suffered. At that time, there were not the same protective mechanisms and follow-up as there are today, and Daiane's suffering seemed to be overshadowed by the lack of resources and attention.
The day I heard the devastating news of her death was one of the darkest in my life. Daiane, the strongest and bravest person I ever knew, couldn't bear the pressure of being an orphan and enduring so much suffering. Her departure left a huge void in my heart, and the feeling of helplessness in the face of her tragedy deeply marked me.
That night, I cried silently, feeling a mixture of sadness and anger at the injustice that befell my friend. I felt guilty for not being able to protect her and help
her in the same way she always did for me.
After the bath, I allowed myself a moment of care and indulgence for myself. I loved taking my time in the bath and using my favorite products. As I got ready, I felt the scent of my Floratta body splash, my favorite brand of perfume, filling the air around me. It was a small pleasure that I allowed myself amidst so many turbulences in my life.
Dressed in the bathroom to avoid Damon seeing me naked, I left the room feeling a little lighter, although I still carried the weight of the memories from the orphanage. In our relationship, I always tried to maintain a certain physical distance to avoid any awkwardness since our marriage was only an agreement, a pact made under extreme circumstances.
The truth was that, despite all appearances, I couldn't remain indifferent to Damon. He was like an enigma that intrigued me, a mystery I couldn't fully decipher. Deep down, I knew he also had his wounds and demons, and that made me feel a silent empathy for him.
But at the same time, the weight of the past prevented me from fully surrendering to any feeling. The trauma of the orphanage, the disappointments life brought me, and the feeling of being destined for a life in the mafia made it difficult for me to trust anyone completely, even someone like Damon, who had his principles and a peculiar code of honor.
When I returned to the suite, I found Damon holding one of my panties, which made me playfully scold him, but it also caused a shiver of vulnerability.
