DR. ELENA PETROV
DANTE ROMANO - POV
We're two miles into the woods when Isabella stumbles.
Nico catches her before she hits the ground. "You okay?"
"Fine." She's not. Breathing hard. One hand protective over her stomach. "Just tired."
Tired doesn't cover it. She's six weeks pregnant with telepathic twins and we just ran from six SUVs of enhanced soldiers through dense forest. Marco's wheelchair barely functional over roots and rocks. We're leaving tracks a child could follow.
"Keep moving." Marco. Practical. Always practical. "They'll have trackers in the woods within minutes."
He's right. I cover our trail as we go. Old skills from when information gathering required physical infiltration instead of digital access. Breaking branches wrong directions. Disturbing ground away from our actual path. Small deceptions that buy minutes.
Minutes might be all we have.
The service road appears after what feels like hours. Probably thirty minutes. Time distorts under adrenaline. The backup vehicle I stashed three days ago sits exactly where I left it. Always plan for compromise.
We pile in. Marco's wheelchair collapsed in the trunk. Isabella in back seat. Nico driving. Me navigating us south.
Away from Chicago. Away from everything we know.
"How did they find us?" Nico asks. Eyes on the road. Knuckles white on the steering wheel.
"Tracked something." I'm already running through possibilities. "Phone signal. Financial transaction. Biometric scan somewhere. Sophia's security wasn't perfect."
"Sophia's missing." Marco. Stating facts. "Her protections might have died with her disappearance."
If she disappeared. If she's not watching this entire situation unfold according to some plan we can't see yet.
I don't trust Sophia. Never have. She's too calculating. Too prepared. Like me but without the psychological insight to understand why people do what they do. Just cold strategy.
"We need information." I'm thinking out loud. Processing. "Dr. Elena Petrov. Vincent's partner. We're going in blind and that's suicide."
"Research is risky." Marco. Always weighing threats. "Internet access creates digital footprints. They could track us."
"More risky attacking an enhanced army without knowing what we're facing." I counter. "I need an hour. Public wifi. Anonymized access."
Marco's quiet. Calculating risks I can't see. Finally nods. "One hour. Then we move."
Forty minutes later we pull into a truck stop off I-55. Fluorescent lights. Smell of diesel and burnt coffee. Drivers who don't make eye contact. Perfect.
I take the laptop. Find a corner booth away from security cameras. Isabella follows. Sits across from me. Exhausted but alert in ways that make me think the twins are feeding her energy somehow.
"What are you looking for?" She asks.
"Weaknesses." I start searching. False MAC address. Encrypted connection. Layers of protection that might buy us minutes if they're tracking. "Elena Petrov's background. Publications. Connections. Vincent partnered with her for a reason."
The search returns limited results at first. Dr. Elena Petrov. Geneticist. Age thirty-two. PhD from Cambridge. Published extensively on enhanced genetics.
Then five years ago her academic presence just stops. No papers. No conferences. No presence at all.
"She went underground when Vincent's Project Genesis did." I scroll through archived papers. Reading abstracts. Looking for patterns. "Not coincidence."
University photos next. Research teams. Conference presentations. Elena Petrov standing with colleagues. Dark hair pulled severe. Sharp features. Intense eyes that look familiar in ways I can't immediately place.
"She looks like someone." Isabella leans closer. Squinting at the screen. "I can't figure out who but..."
I enlarge the photo. Study bone structure. Facial features. The way she holds herself. Confidence bordering on arrogance.
Then I see it. The resemblance I should have caught immediately.
"You." The word comes out flat. Certain. "She looks like you."
Isabella goes pale. "What are you talking about?"
I pull up another photo. Split screen comparison. Elena at twenty-five. Isabella at twenty-two now.
Similar height. Build. Facial structure. Not identical twins but family. Close family.
"Vincent's research partner." I'm working it through out loud. Pieces falling into uncomfortable places. "What if she's not just professional collaboration? What if she's personal?"
"His daughter?" Marco. Following my logic from where he's positioned by the window watching for threats.
"His enhanced daughter." I pull up Elena's early research. First person case studies on enhanced genetics. Testing on herself. "She wasn't studying enhanced individuals from academic distance. She was studying herself."
Isabella's breathing changes. Faster. Shallower. "If Elena's enhanced and Vincent's daughter..."
"Half-sister." I finish because someone has to say it. "Vincent's been creating enhanced children for decades. You're not the first. Probably not the only."
The implications spread like cracks through ice. Elena's not a partner. She's a predecessor. Vincent's earlier attempt at creating his perfect enhanced successor.
Isabella's the improved model.
"She knows about me." Isabella. Statement not question. "About my amplification. My abilities."
"Has to." I keep searching. Finding gaps. Deliberate erasures of Elena's presence from public record. Professional removal. "Vincent kept you separate. Competitive. Classic narcissistic parent strategy. Pit children against each other. Make them compete for approval."
"I'm not competing for Vincent's approval." Isabella. Fierce. Defensive in ways that tell me the statement isn't entirely true.
"But Elena is." I find an archived interview from ten years ago. Elena discussing her father's genius. His vision for enhanced evolution. Speaking about him with reverence that makes my skin crawl. "She believes. Completely. Enhanced supremacy. Genetic selection. Vincent's entire ideology."
"True believer." Nico. Understanding why that's worse than mercenary. "Can't reason with faith."
I dig deeper. Financial transactions traced through shell companies. Property purchases under assumed names. Research facility leases. All pointing to continued work underground.
Then I find the pattern. Enhanced prisoner disappearances. Seven incidents over five years. Enhanced individuals officially dying in government custody. Unofficially? Liberation operations.
"Elena's been recruiting." I map the pattern. Show them. "Vincent's failed experiments. Enhanced individuals he deemed inadequate. Abandoned. She's building an army from his rejects."
"How many?" Marco asks. Always quantifying threats.
"Thirty confirmed. Probably more." I cross-reference known enhanced individuals against missing persons. "All enhanced. All with abilities Vincent couldn't control or wouldn't use."
Isabella's face shows something between horror and understanding. "She's gathering people he hurt."
"People who hate the system imprisoning them. Torturing them. Experimenting on them." I find facility records next. Government black sites. Enhanced detention centers. Places that officially don't exist. "She's offering them revenge."
"Against what targets?" Nico. Practical.
The target list takes longer to find. Buried in encrypted communications I shouldn't be able to access. Can anyway because information is currency and I've invested heavily.
Five locations. Government facilities across three states. Enhanced detention centers where prisoners are held indefinitely. Studied. Experimented on.
Tortured.
"Simultaneous attacks on five facilities." I read details that make my stomach tight. "Six days from now according to Sophia's timeline. Coordinated strikes. Liberation of approximately two hundred enhanced prisoners."
Nobody speaks.
Two hundred enhanced individuals. With powers. Abilities. Rage from years of torture. Released simultaneously into population centers.
The math is simple. Catastrophic.
"Two hundred enhanced individuals." Marco. Voice flat. Processing. "With abilities we can't predict. Anger from systematic abuse. Released into cities."
"War." Isabella. Understanding. "Enhanced versus baseline humanity. Exactly what Vincent wanted."
"Elena's fulfilling his vision." I close the laptop. Suddenly exhausted. "Perfect loyal daughter executing father's master plan."
"Does she know he's dead?" Nico asks.
The question stops me. I think back through intelligence. Elena's communications. Her certainty. Her orders.
"She thinks she's hearing from him." Understanding hits cold. "Telepathic communication through enhanced psychic networks. She doesn't realize his consciousness is fragmented. She's picking up Architect fragments bleeding through."
"Following orders from scattered thoughts." Marco. Grim understanding.
"Following orders she believes are real." I correct. "Makes her more dangerous. Can't reason someone out of faith."
"We have to stop her." Isabella. Determined. Hand on her stomach. "Two hundred traumatized enhanced prisoners released angry? People die. Enhanced and baseline both."
"We're four people." Nico. Blunt math. "Against thirty enhanced soldiers plus two hundred prisoners. Numbers don't work."
"We need government cooperation." Marco. Strategic option I hate. "Military resources. Support we don't have access to."
"Which means revealing we're alive." I state what everyone's thinking. "Surrendering our death advantage. Putting ourselves back in the system that wants to study us. Control us."
"They'll take me." Isabella. Voice small. "Study me. The twins. Experiment. We become prisoners."
"Maybe." Marco. Honest. "Or we negotiate. Cooperation for protection."
"Government doesn't negotiate with enhanced individuals." I've read the policies. Seen the files. "They contain. Eliminate."
"Then what?" Nico. Frustrated. Scared. "Let Elena attack? Start the war?"
No good answers. Every option leads through danger.
I reopen the laptop. Look at Elena's photo again. Isabella's half-sister. Vincent's true believer daughter.
"I contact her." The idea forms as I speak. Working it through. "Make her doubt. Question whether the voice she hears is really Vincent."
"She won't listen." Isabella. Certain.
"Not to facts." I agree. "But maybe to you. Her rival. Her replacement in Vincent's affection. Seeing you might trigger doubt about her position. Her value."
"You want to use sibling rivalry as psychological weapon." Marco. Understanding my strategy.
"Six days until coordinated attacks." I remind them. "Two hundred enhanced prisoners. War. We're already in impossible territory."
Isabella meets my eyes. "What do you need?"
"Let me leverage your existence." Honest. "Elena sees you as threat and opportunity both. We exploit that."
"And if it doesn't work?" She asks.
"We improvise."
I compose the message. Encrypted channels only enhanced individuals monitor. Direct to Elena.
"Your father's dead. The voice you hear is fragments. Let's talk. Isabella Hart."
Send.
Response comes faster than possible. Like she was waiting.
"I know what you are, sister. Vincent told me everything. Tomorrow midnight. Coordinates attached. Come alone or I attack tonight."
My hands go cold on the keyboard.
Tonight. Not six days. Tonight.
"She's accelerating." I show them. "Wants Isabella alone tomorrow. Or attacks in hours."
"Trap." Marco. Certain.
"Obviously." I agree. "Question is whether we walk into it anyway."
Isabella reads the message. Hand on stomach. Protecting impossible children.
"I go." She decides. "But not alone. We face her together."
I'm staring at Elena's message. The part that bothers me most.
"Vincent told me everything."
If Vincent told her everything, Elena knows about the pregnancy. The twins. The bonding ritual.
She knows Isabella's vulnerable.
And she's demanding a meeting anyway.
Does Elena want to stop us?
Recruit us?
Or eliminate the competition?
We have twenty four hours to find out.
And I'm terrified we're walking into something I can't manipulate our way out of.
