Fleeting escape
Fleeting escape
William pressed the muzzle of his gun against my father's temple and my father's face darkened to purple.
Get the fuck off me. My father's fury emanated from him, but William stood his ground.
'Put the gun down, empty it and throw it away or your father's brains will be your next dish.' William plunged the gun into Dad's temple.
'Don't be stupid,' I said as they followed his instructions.
'You're the one being an idiot,' William said as my hands trembled. 'I would have given you whatever you would have wanted. All you had to do was follow orders and spread your legs.'
'Go away,' Edward told me . 'Go away.'
I couldn't.
She carries my grandchild in her womb,' my father said, and his face softened. 'Let her go. There must be another way.
There is no other way. You cost me a woman all those years ago. You owe me one,' William said.
'I don't owe you shit.
William looked at my father, surprised that he had finally spoken out against him even though the barrel of his gun was sticking an inch from his brain.
'Amelia , go away,' he said. 'Go with Edward , have the baby'.
The world stopped as William pulled the trigger and Edward threw the knife. The blade dug into William's shoulder , but seconds later it was too late. All hell broke loose. My father's face went blank as blood poured out of the side of his head and his body collapsed. At that very moment, my father's men entered the room as Edward lunged at me, grabbing me by the shoulders and heading for the doors. Dan pulled William and Keren out the window, running across the lawn.
'No!' I screamed as Edward dragged me away. 'My father, we have to go back.
'We can't, honey, they'll be back with more men. I have to get you out of here.'
I'll kill him. I'll fucking kill him." But even as I shouted it, my resolve weakened as I threw myself over Edward's shoulder, the last few minutes hitting me like a train wreck.
With a face full of tears and snot, mixed with the blood from hitting me with the gun, Edward walked out of the mansion with me slung over his shoulder, while my sister watched me silently from the top of the stairs.
I'm sorry," I whispered.
EDWARD
Amelia was catatonic, moving with me but like an empty shell, devoid of all emotion. Everything had gone wrong. I had taken Amelia out, but I had seen her father shot and it was my fault. I reached into my pocket, seeking the comforting warmth of my pocketknife before remembering that I had last seen it stuck in William .
Amelia was sitting on my couch; her face was still red and tear-stained, but staring blankly out the window. Things were not supposed to be like this and I had no idea how to fix it. She couldn't have her father's shot taken away.
Luca was in the kitchen, typing furiously on his laptop as he created hidden accounts for us to access my money and arranged flights under our new not-so-legal names. We were waiting for Emes Falú to approach so we could force him, or beg him, to hurry up and make a new ID that would allow us to travel. I just hoped that Mery would not tell William or his brothers that we had used him.
There was a knock at the door, and when I opened it, Emes gasped.
No, no way," he said, backing away.
I grabbed him by the collar and pulled him inside, pushing him toward the kitchen. He glanced at Amelia and lunged at me.
What have you done to her, little girl?
I got her out of the situation she was trapped in and now we need your help to escape."
Why would I help you? You left me tied to a chair with one fucking finger. It cost me a fucking ton of money too."
"You can have my house. It's two-thirds paid for, and my buddy Luca can put it in your name in a matter of minutes."
Falú looked around before settling his eyes on Amelia . What will happen to her if you don't leave?
She tried to shoot William Harrison , so nothing good. It was an understatement. When William regrouped with his men, he would seek revenge. He loathed being confronted. I could only hope that the consequences of shooting Kyle would buy us some time.
You need two sets of documents in what, a couple of hours? I'm not sure the house is worth enough to do it that fast," Falú said .
What if I add the house next door? Amanda's voice came from the entrance, where she had opened the door and was dragging a large suitcase down the hall. But we'd need a third set of documents.
I smiled at her; her face lit up at the sight of Emes Falú and Lucas , but she frowned at the sight of Amelia . I had cleaned up and done what I could with her, but she still had blood under her fingernails and a cut over her eye, and she had refused to take off her blood-stained dress.
"The same as this, but fully paid for?" said Falú .
Amanda , you can't leave your house for us. You can't leave everything.
Yes, I can. And I will. I've already told you I'm not going to sit there rotting while you all go off on an adventure without me. I'm coming.
My heart swelled as she looked at me with a determined smile. Families come in many different forms, and mine may well include the sweet old lady next door after all. Well, that's fine, who am I to say no to you?
But in a warm place, remember, for arthritis."
Falú held out his hand and I shook it. Luca , get his data and put the two houses in his name. Make it iron so he'll be ready as soon as he gets back with the IDs."
