Revenge foretold
Because he was in love with my mother, and she chose my father. As teenagers they were thick as thieves, and they worked their way up from the lower rungs of other gangs to form their own together. Together they were ruthless and soon amassed a criminal organization that rivaled any of the others. Then Mom came along, and they were both instantly smitten, vying for her attention. And she delighted in it, switching from one to the other and even both at the same time. I think she thought they might all be together, but both my father and William were too jealous to think about it. They both liked to conquer completely, and although they shared a business, sharing a woman was too much. William gave her an ultimatum, and she chose Dad. It left him furious and wild and erased any moral compass he once had'.
Why wait so long to get revenge?
'They still worked together for a while, and then William met his wife, and Dad distanced himself from him, creating his own empire. For a while William seemed happy, at least outwardly, but his wife could never live up to the image he had of her in his head. From what I have heard, he was terribly cruel to both her and their two children, to the point that she abandoned them and disappeared. William seems to have that effect on women."
I sighed and closed my eyes, the bus rocking us as the rural scenery swept over us. Why did your father agree to let him marry you knowing all that?
I'm collateral damage. Risking one to save many. I'm sure he hates himself for agreeing to it too, but he's already lost his wife and oldest son. He wants to avoid losing any more children to William's bullets . Not to mention how unstable things have been lately, William is powerful, much more so than Dad even. He's got his fingers in so many pies that he's starting to strangle Dad's grip on Glasgow, and marrying me will theoretically end this war between the two of them. Not that I foresee it working. William just wants to twist the knife.
"You don't deserve this," I said, my thumb running down his cheek.
"I know. But if it's me or Mery , I don't have a choice. She's my little sister."
We were speechless for a while; the bus lulled us into silence as I racked my brain trying to find a way out for Amelia . Trying to find the possibility of a future for us. All roads ended in death, hers or mine. William was not a man to mess with, not even for someone like me who made his living killing. He was well aware of the host of enemies waiting for an opportunity to destroy him, and he gathered around him men who would shoot first and ask questions later.
My jaw tensed as I stared out the window, rage tearing at my insides. I was fucking useless, and I would be the one to return Amelia to the monster that awaited her.
I should have left her at the tavern when I had the chance.
AMELIA
The masseuse finished rubbing my legs with her oiled hands while I sighed happily. Edward had booked a fantastic hotel, all marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and even a luxury spa. For two days we had pretended that it wasn't the beginning of the end and had limited ourselves to eating well, walking hand in hand around the city and fucking like crazy. Between her online card and my ill-gotten dancing money, we had lived like kings.
It had been the best days of my life. I couldn't decide if it was because I knew our time was limited, so I had none of the reluctance that usually accompanies new relationships, or the fact that I'd seen him cut a dick off a man's stomach to defend my honor, but the barriers between us had evaporated.
The masseuse put a warm towel on my back before leaving the room, leaving me to the soft tinkling of music coming from the room's sound system. I rested my head on my arm and watched Edward sitting on the terrace. His chest was rising and falling gently as he basked in the sun, his blond hair peeking out from the hat he had pulled over his face. I felt warm in my stomach as I watched him and pondered everything I knew about him. What would he do when we got back, when he no longer saw me?
Loneliness clung to him as surely as his shadow, leaving visible chasms around his heart. I hadn't seen them before, but I'd never looked beyond his sexy bad boy shell. Inside, he was sweeter than she'd ever imagined. Protective. Dare I say, loving. He fed off my touch and my attention, and I'd never felt so needed. So wanted. It was killing me. This glimpse of what could be was both a curse and a blessing, for I would feel his absence more keenly when he was no longer within my reach.
I took a quick shower before opening the rooftop door and walking naked to the giant hot tub.
Edward murmured his approval as I walked past him, wiggling a little more, just for his benefit.
"Keep wiggling that and I'll have to give you another bite," he said, taking off his hat and placing it on the table beside him.
You wouldn't dare.
"But you know I would. And I'd get it nice and red first."
"Promises, promises," I sighed with an overly dramatic air, pressing the button on the pool that brought the bubbles to life.
I plunged into the water, whose jets soothed my muscles. I closed my eyes and leaned against the shore; the sun was warming my face. Until a shadow stole my warmth.
His hand was in my hair before I could open my eyes, pulling me up and over the edge of the hot tub so that my ass was in full view. Luckily, with the height of the hotel and our suite on the top floor, it was unlikely anyone could see us.
