CHAPTER 58: Luca's Wake Up Call.

CHAPTER 58: Luca's Wake Up Call.
The meeting was called for ten in the morning and by five minutes to that time, every man who had been summoned was already present.
Isabella had not been summoned officially, but she had still followed the sound of boots and serious voices down to the east wing conference room and stood in the open doorway until Luca took notice of her presence. He looked at her for a while without any visible expression, then he slowly pulled out the chair beside him at the head of the table and nodded at it. She moved with pride and grace, taking the seat without a word and not even bothering to thank him. Nobody in the room said anything or grumbled about her presence, but she was very sure it was because of their fear and respect for Luca.
There were fourteen men in total seated round the table… Senior lieutenants, operational heads, and then two men she didn't recognize who had the look of outside counsel brought in for specific information. Riccardo sat three seats from Luca's right, with his arms folded and his face carrying the look of someone who was professionally attentive and privately somewhere else entirely.
Luca stood at the head of the table without sitting down and looked silently and slowly around the room. At that sign, all the conversations that had been running in low murmurs died completely before he even opened his mouth to speak.
"Vazquez," he began firmly, “is a man who believes I am too distracted to notice or too weakened to respond." He paused and looked at the table. "He is wrong on both counts."
One of the lieutenants, a tough and fearless man named Caruso who Isabella had seen twice in the corridors and who had a permanently skeptical expression on his face and always seemed like someone who needed to be convinced of everything before he committed to anything, leaned forward slightly.
"With respect, Don Luca," Caruso said, "Vazquez and his men have been testing our response time for weeks and we haven't moved on him yet. From where he's standing, that probably looks like weakness regardless of what the actual reason was or is."
"The actual reason," Luca said calmly, looking at Caruso with an even patience that was somehow more intimidating than anger would have been, "was that I wanted to understand the full extent of what he was doing before I responded to any part of it. Responding to the first provocation would have shown him where our pressure points were, but waiting it out has shown him nothing about where to hurt us. The biggest factor now is that I know everything he has moved and I know every route he used to move it, and he has no idea that I know."
Caruso absorbed this bold declaration and sat back without further comment.
Isabella watched on silently. She had seen Luca in many emotional and mental states since Rome. Gentle, furious, patient, wounded, and even warm. But she had not seen this… This was something different and it took her a moment to identify what it was exactly. It was a command of power in its purest form, not just the performed authority of a man who needed people to believe he was powerful, but the real and settled version of it that came from someone who had never actually doubted that the room and everyone in it belonged to him.
It unsettled her more than she expected it to.
"The response to Vasquez and his men will be threefold," Luca continued, moving to the map that one of his men had spread across the center of the table. "First, we will recover every distribution point he has touched. It will not be through negotiation, and neither will it be patient. Everything will be carried out simultaneously and within forty-eight hours. I want all of his operations disrupted at every level at the same time so that he cannot even redirect resources from one point to back up another."
Luca continued speaking, laying out the specifics with a coldness that was almost uncomfortable to watch, naming streets and contact points and timing windows from memory without referring to a single document. The men around the table who had been even a little bit skeptical when they first sat down were not skeptical anymore. Isabella could see it happening in real time, the room beginning to take shape around him, the doubt dissolving not because he had asked them to trust him but because he had simply demonstrated that trusting him was the only correct and strategic choice.
"Second," Luca said, "we will send Vazquez a message through his own network, but it won't be just another ordinary threat. I want us to deliver a full demonstration for him… One of his storage facilities in the Bronx, the one on Garrison Avenue that he thinks we don't know about. I want it completely emptied tonight, and everything in it transferred to our holding without a single shot fired. It should be very clean and quiet, and I want him to wake up tomorrow morning and find it gone without knowing how or when it happened."
Marco Gentile, who had spoken up in Riccardo's conversation the night before and struck Isabella as a man with actual judgment, was nodding slowly. Paulo Ricci beside him was writing something down with so much focus that he looked like someone eagerly converting spoken strategy into actionable steps.
"Third," Luca said, and his voice dropped just a little, which somehow made the room pay even more attention to what he had to say, "we must make it clear to every family watching this situation that the Moretti response to provocation is not just loud and emotional, it is swift, firm, and complete. Anyone who has been considering whether the current situation represents an opportunity to take advantage of us should reconsider that calculation before they make a move they cannot take back."
He looked around the table one more time.
"Any questions?" he said.
There were a few. Logistical ones, timing confirmations, a brief discussion about a potential overlap in the Brooklyn operation that Luca resolved in under two minutes with a route adjustment that two of the men immediately agreed was better than what they had been planning. The meeting moved on with the speed and accuracy of a mechanism that had been built and maintained by someone who understood every component of it.
Isabella watched on carefully, and what she saw was a man who was not simply running an organization, but firmly holding one together through the force of a mind that processed and solved problems faster than most people actually realized.
When the meeting finally came to an end and the men began moving toward the door, she stayed in her seat and waited until Luca caught her eye from the other end of the table where he was finalizing some details with his top men. He held the gaze for a moment with a blank expression she couldn't quite understand, then turned back again to continue speaking with Marco and Paulo about the Brooklyn timeline.
She was almost at the door when she noticed Riccardo.
He had stayed back also, letting the other men file out around him, and now he was standing beside one of the younger lieutenants, a man named Savio who had been quiet throughout the meeting and who Isabella had placed as relatively new to his current rank. Riccardo had his hand on Savio's shoulder in the easy and familiar way of a senior man sharing a private word with a junior one, and he was speaking very quietly, close enough to Savio's ear that nothing could be heard across the room.
Savio was listening with his eyes slightly lowered and his jaw tight. He had the look of a man receiving information he wasn't sure he wanted and didn't know what to do with. When Riccardo finished speaking he straightened and gave Savio's shoulder one firm pat, then walked toward the exit with his hands in his pockets and his face completely composed.
Savio stood where he was for a moment after Riccardo left, looking at the table with an uncertain expression that he put away quickly when he noticed Isabella still in the doorway. He gave her a brief and uncomfortable nod and then followed the others out.
Isabella stepped back into the corridor and let the foot traffic of departing men move around her. She thought about Savio's face and his reaction to whatever it was that Riccardo had just told him. It dawned on her that he may actually be the chosen minion of Riccardo and not Marco, who was definitely way too experienced and too sure of his own judgment to be easily influenced. It couldn't have been Paulo too, because he asked too many questions before forming an opinion. Savio was younger, ambitious, and new enough to his position that the approval of a senior man still mattered to him. He was exactly the kind of person that a carefully planted doubt could grow in, especially when given enough time and the right conditions.
Riccardo was not panicking, and he was not acting out of pure anger or wounded pride. He was clearly building something, patiently and methodically, and the meeting this morning had definitely not slowed him down. If anything, the display of Luca's authority had probably made him even more urgent, because a room full of men who had just been reminded of exactly how formidable Luca Moretti was would need a very specific and very convincing reason to question him.
And Riccardo, she was beginning to understand, was quietly working on providing exactly that.
She walked back toward the stairs and thought about how much time she had before whatever he was building became too large to stop without a direct confrontation that would force everything into the open before she was ready.
Not much, she decided.
Not much time at all.
