CHAPTER 40: Doubts And Confliction.

CHAPTER 40: Doubts And Confliction.

Isabella jerked awake with a soft, startled inhale…the kind that happens when the body isn't really sure if it had been asleep or had actually collapsed into unconsciousness. Her eyelids fluttered open slowly, adjusting to the light of the bedroom. She pushed herself upright, calmly rubbing the remnants of sleep from her eyes.
But then she paused in surprise.
On the bed beside her was a bouquet… not just a bouquet, but a full explosion of lush roses, peonies, and orchids, all perfectly arranged with almost insane elegance she had ever seen. The flowers looked like they had been specially handpicked for royalty, and the fragrance that came from them instantly dulled her senses. Beside them was a beautiful dress made from pure silk, and soft enough that even from where she sat, Isabella could see the fabric ripple like water. The stitching was perfect, and the tailoring was unmistakably expensive.
There was confusion as she reached out and gently brushed her fingers over the dress. The silk glided under her touch, smooth, luxurious, far too beautiful to be randomly placed in her space.
Where is he?
She turned and began to check the entire room, looking for any sign of him. There was no sign of Luca…No sound from the bathroom. No shadow leaning against the doorway, watching her with that irritating combination of arrogance and sincerity he was now becoming very good at carrying effortlessly.
It was just her in the bedroom, her and the flowers, and the dress. All she could remember was the chaos that happened the previous day…Luca had been bleeding, and he had collapsed. Her heart had nearly stopped in her chest, and she had screamed her lungs out and ran to him.
Isabella closed her eyes briefly, hating the fact that she could remember that moment with such clarity. The actual panic that she had felt. The way her hands trembled as she tried to help him keep pressure on his wound. The way he had still somehow managed to smile, even when he was half conscious and bleeding out.
“He’s an asshole,” she muttered under her breath.
She picked up the bouquet, bringing it closer to sniff it properly. The scent hit her again…fresh, delicate, and undeniably beautiful. It made something inside her go soft immediately.
Too much.
He was doing too much.
The realization pricked at her composure, and she set the flowers down quickly, almost as if they were burning her fingers. Her eyes then went back to the dress.
Luca Moretti was a dangerous man who easily intimidated entire city blocks when he walked into a room. A man whose enemies trembled simply at the mention of his name. A man that was feared, revered, and dangerous beyond measure.
And he was giving her…flowers and dresses?
She couldn’t afford this.
She lifted the dress to feel it, letting the fabric fall between her fingers. It was nearly weightless…soft enough to feel like a whisper against her skin, and elegant enough for her to know instantly that it was intended specifically for her. It was also obvious that he had picked the color, the shape, and the style intentionally, because they were exactly her taste.
Luca remembered little details about her preferences, and that seemingly simple gesture melted her heart even more.
Stop it! She scolded herself, dropping the dress on the bed and backing away from it.
Her thoughts were now breaking out into a hurricane of emotions once again, and she couldn't seem to wrap her head around what Luca's true intentions really are.
He kept on doing all these little things for her. And she had also seen the truth last night in his eyes in the moments after he collapsed…fear. Fear for her. Not for himself.
And her stupid heart reacted yet again.
She hissed in frustration, telling herself that she was going crazy and losing focus on her mission. Luca Moretti was the enemy…He was the man responsible for the blood that ruined her life. The man who tore her entire family apart. The man she was meant to destroy.
At least…that was what she had believed.
But then images flashed through her mind…his confusion when she confronted him the first time, the way he looked genuinely gutted every time she accused him, the desperation in his voice in Rome when he insisted he hadn’t touched her family.
What if…
No.
Isabella shook her head aggressively.
This was exactly how people like him worked. They manipulated, charmed, misled, and twisted realities. She wasn’t going to be one of those women who fell for a mafia king because he bought her flowers and looked at her with soft eyes during a moment of vulnerability.
She had come here for vengeance…To destroy him and to find the truth no matter what it cost.
She sighed again and walked to the mirror.
“And now look at you,” she whispered bitterly to herself. “Melting at flowers and pretty dresses.”
Her anger flared in an instant, and she stormed to the bed, snatching the dress and hurling it violently across the room. It fell on one of the armchairs, and then the bouquet followed next, scattering petals across the floor.
She was breathing very hard now as she lashed out. Good…She needed the anger. The anger made sense.
But then something caught her eye. Something small, square, and white…fluttering out from between the folds of the dress as it finally fell to the ground.
A note.
Her heartbeat stuttered, and she hesitated for a moment before walking over and picking it up.
She recognized Luca’s handwriting instantly, and her heart pounded heavily as she unfolded the paper and began to read the simple message.
‘Thank you for staying with me.
Thank you for not walking away.
I know you didn’t have to help me last night. I know you had every reason to leave me exactly where I fell.
But you didn’t.
This is just a small gift. A poor attempt at showing my gratitude. If you will allow me… I would like to take you to dinner this evening.
No expectations. No demands. Just you and me.
Luca.’
Her breath paused, and her fingers tightened around the note.
Just you and me.
Her emotions surged and clashed violently…anger, confusion, tenderness, resentment, and guilt. It was a savage storm without direction, dragging her deeper instead of letting her think clearly.
She sat down on the edge of the bed to steady her head, still holding the note in her hand, staring at the words until they became blurry.
Why?
Why did he keep doing this? Why did he care so much? Why did he look at her the way he did? Why did he bleed and still try to stand just to reassure her? Why did he insist on protecting her when she had given him nothing but accusations and grief?
Why did he look so heartbreakingly sincere every time he said he wasn’t responsible for her family’s destruction?
She closed her eyes.
What if she was wrong?
What if she had built her entire mission on a lie? What if she was hunting the wrong man? What if Luca wasn’t the monster she had painted him to be…because she needed a monster to blame?
Isabella opened her eyes again, staring at the bouquet scattered across the rug, at the dress lying crumpled beside the chair, and at the note trembling between her fingers.
She couldn’t deny the truth forming in her heart. A part of her wanted to go to that dinner… A part of her wanted to sit across from him, look him in the eye, and demand the truth from him. Not out of hatred, or out of the need for vengeance, but out of a need for clarity. A need to understand why someone like him would go to such lengths for someone like her.
But another part of her…the part that had survived fire and gunshots and betrayal…roared in warning.
He’s dangerous.
He’s powerful.
He’s unpredictable.
And he could destroy you without even trying.
She frowned again. She couldn’t afford to trust him…Not yet. Not until she knew everything.
She folded the note back carefully, almost too carefully, and set it down beside her on the bed.
She needed answers. She needed the truth. She needed to stop letting emotions cloud her judgment.
But the truth was simple, no matter how much she hated it…She didn’t know whether she was going to accept his invitation.
Not yet.
Not when her heart felt like it was being split in two.
Isabella stood up slowly again, crossed the room, and picked up the dress from the floor. Her eyes went through the fabric again, softer this time, more hesitant.
She hung it over the armchair, smoothing the silk with one hand.
Then she picked up the flowers, gathering the scattered stems with a conflicted expression she couldn’t fully suppress.
Her decision hung in the air, heavy and unresolved.
She would think about it.
She would take the day to breathe. To sort through the wreckage of her emotions. To remember why she came here.
But she couldn’t pretend Luca’s gesture meant nothing…Because it did.
More than she wanted it to.
And now she had a choice to make…To go or not to go.
