Chapter 53 - Agony!
Third Person's POV:
"Mom, I am Sapphire." The woman's frown deepened but as she comprehended what the girl said, her eyes widened and mouth hung open.
"Y-you a-are Sapphire!" She was shocked.
"Mom, it has been many years. How are you? Did you ever remember me once in those years?" Sapphire asked, her voice was cracking slowly.
She knew very well what would be her answer. But the daughter inside her who never got an ounce of motherly affection couldn't help asking this stupid question.
The woman didn't say anything, she opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out. She closed her mouth again and looked another direction.
Sapphire wasn't disappointed much, but still, tears were streaming from her eyes.
It's okay, Sapphire. She was once ready to sell me, her own daughter. This is not something unexpected from her. It's okay. She thought.
"You are here? What happened?" Sapphire again inquired her.
She looked at Sapphire.
"I am staying at a shelter home. Isn't it obvious? I am miserable." She admitted.
"Now when I look at my previous life, previous deeds, I think I deserve all these." She added with a bitter smile after some seconds.
Sapphire was surprised hearing that. She tried to observe her expression. She looked guilty for a moment.
Her eyes were dull, the skin was dry, wrinkled, and she was reduced to skin and bone, looked horrible as her jaw twisted in a side.
She destroyed her own family for her self-interest, she once prioritized beauty over her child, her family. He abused her child for the sake of another man.
And today, she was all alone; neither had she had her husband beside her nor her child. She was pitiful.
"How are you? How is your father? Does he talk about me?" She managed to ask.
"Dad is no more mom. He passed away from cancer. And when he was alive, he never mentioned you." Sapphire said truthfully.
"Oh. And you?" She asked.
Sapphire wanted to laugh out loud. She was her mother yet she did horrible, unspeakable things to her. Still, she dared to ask. But as she asked, she deserved an answer, the true answer.
"Mom, I remember you. Even if I tried to forget you, I couldn't. Do you know why mom?" Sapphire questioned.
Her mother looked at her with curious eyes.
"Because you still haunt me in my dreams mom, " Sapphire stated in a voice filled with pain.
The woman's eyes went big again. Sapphire got out of the shelter home and got inside the car. Sitting inside the car alone, she tried to control her sobs. After crying for about an hour, she finally stopped when her eyes red blood red, puffy. She wiped her eyes and started the ignition of the car.
Driving slowly she pulled the car into her old apartment garage. She didn't want to return Alexander's mansion now. She wanted to be alone for some time being. She entered her apartment and retired her body on the bed.
Her heart was feeling too much pain.
When Alexander killed Michael she thought she escaped her past forgood; it wouldn't chase her ever. But she was wrong. Today she saw her mother again and all the almost healed wounds inside her heart reopened, bleeding raw.
That woman hurt her so much. She wanted to abort her, starved her, abused her, let another man assault her sexually and physically, she even wanted to sell her.
But still, Sapphire couldn't bring herself wish her death. She was already pitiful. One question again resurfaced in her mind.
Why she did that with me? Aren't mothers supposed to protect their children from all evils?
She slowly got up from her bed and went inside her bathroom. Rotating the shower dial she stood under the outflowing water. Cold water chilled her body but her mind was restless. Standing under the shower for a long time, she finally got out of the bathroom. She dried her body and changed into a comfy home wear.
Her mobile beeped. She saw a text from Alexander.
Hey. How my angel is doing?
A faint smile played on her lips. She wrote-
I am fine. How is your day?
Sapphire sent it.
It is tiring as usual. I can't wait to see you.
He replied.
Me too, love you.
Sapphire texted back.
She called the manager of that shelter home in the evening. She actually wanted to talk about her mother. She looked sick; she wanted to tell him to arrange treatment for her but what the manager informed her was shocking. Soon after leaving the shelter home, suddenly the woman became extremely ill. She was coughing vigorously and couldn't breathe. So, they admitted her into a hospital. The doctor already said her condition was very critical, she might die anytime. Doctors' assumption, she was suffering from pulmonary thrombosis and liver cirrhosis.
Sapphire was again shocked and confused. She couldn't understand what she should do, what she should feel.
She wanted to stay away from everything, everyone, for some time. She switched off her mobile.
On the other hand, Alexander returned his mansion but Sapphire wasn't there. He tried calling her but her phone was switched off. He contacted her friends but they couldn't give him any update on her too. She left the shelter home a long ago.
Suddenly fear got him over. He decided to check on her apartment for one last time. When he pulled into the garage and saw the car Sapphire took today, he sighed in relief.
But at the same time, immense anger formed inside him because of her.
How could she be so fucking irresponsible? Didn't she know how worried he would be? I will make sure she doesn't do this ever again.
He wanted to give her a good scolding.
He got on the elevator and reached her apartment. He rang the doorbell for a few times but to his surprise, there was no response.
Then he realized that something wasn't right. Without wasting any minute on contemplating, he unlocked the door and got inside. He carefully headed to her bedroom.
But his heart broke when eyes darted at Sapphire. She was sobbing hard, sitting on her bed.
"Angel?" He rushed to her. Sitting on the bed, he hugged her to his chest.
Sapphire clutched onto him tightly and said, "S-she is h-here. I-it hurts so bad Alexander. I can't take it. I can't b-bear the agony anymore." She cried in his chest.
Alexander couldn't understand what she was talking about. He sat there hugging her, and trying to soothe her with his gentle cooing words.
But nothing seemed to work.
