Chapter 300: The Person Who Saved Him Back Then Was Evelyn

Michael grew angrier the more he thought about it. "Even if something happens to the baby she's carrying, it has nothing to do with me. That child isn't mine."

Gabriel mustered all his strength and slapped Michael across the face. "You damned bastard! How dare you slander Evelyn like that? I should beat you to death!"

Gabriel raised his cane to strike again, but Isadora stopped him just in time.

She walked up to Michael. "Who told you the baby Evelyn's carrying isn't yours? Was it Elysia?" She paused. "And did you send people to forcibly terminate Evelyn's pregnancy?"

"I didn't, I—"

Michael said immediately.

He truly hadn't.

Isadora cut him off. "I already know. Gabriel caught those men. Whether you sent them or someone used your name, Gabriel will get to the bottom of it."

"Since you prefer staying here with this tramp, then keep her company. Gabriel and I will look after Evelyn. We don't need you, you bastard."

Isadora helped Gabriel leave.

Michael looked at Chase, who had just entered, his eyes asking what had happened.

Chase whispered in Michael's ear, "Sir, everything Isadora said is true. A group of people took Evelyn and tried to force a miscarriage. If Mr. Gabriel Johnson hadn't arrived in time... the baby would be gone."

Michael's jaw tightened as he strode toward the door.

Elysia frantically blocked him. "Michael, you're already divorced from Evelyn. You're my boyfriend now. You can't—"

Michael didn't pause for a second and left the room.

Elysia grabbed Scarlett's hand anxiously. "Mom, what do we do now? That damned baby is still in Evelyn's belly. Mom, I'm so scared. I feel like we can't keep hiding things much longer."

"Elysia, don't be afraid, I—"

Scarlett tried to comfort Elysia, but she was terrified herself, her lips trembling so badly she couldn't finish a sentence.

After leaving Elysia's room, Michael tried to see Evelyn but was blocked by Isadora.

"Sorry, Mr. Johnson, but you're the last person Evelyn wants to see right now. Please don't show your face around her anymore. None of us want you here."

Michael's jaw clenched. "Isadora, don't interfere. Just let me see her."

"Aren't you head over heels for that tramp Elysia? Go see her instead. Don't come near Evelyn—who knows what other schemes Elysia will cook up to hurt her. I don't have proof yet, but I'm convinced Elysia's behind the kidnapping and attempted forced abortion. She's a would-be murderer. Go keep your beloved killer company. You're not welcome here."

"Isadora, I—" Michael sighed deeply. "The situation between Evelyn, Elysia, and me isn't as simple as you think. Elysia saved my life. I promised to stay with her forever. I can't break that promise."

"Elysia saved your life?" Isadora frowned. "You've got to be kidding me. Someone like Elysia? She's more likely to kill people than save them. That's impossible! Unless... she took credit for someone else's good deed? Now that sounds like something she'd do."

Michael gritted his teeth. "I'll investigate all of this later. Just let me see Evelyn now."

"Why don't you come back after you've figured things out? Otherwise, I'm worried the baby won't be lost because of someone else's violence—it'll be lost because you, the child's biological father, stressed her out."

Isadora's laugh was cold.

Michael had no choice but to investigate first.

Leaving the hospital, Michael pulled out his phone and called Chase.

"Find out who actually saved me in those woods back then. Do it again. I don't care what methods you use—I need the truth."

After hanging up with Chase, he called Gabriel. "Grandpa, where are the men you caught? I want to interrogate them myself. If you don't trust me, you can have Noah supervise."

Gabriel said something on the other end, and Michael's grip on his phone tightened. "No matter what the interrogation reveals, I won't let the mastermind behind this get away with it."

After hanging up, Michael drove to the Johnson Mansion's basement.

Seeing the men kneeling on the floor, he said nothing and beat them savagely, bloodying his own hands before finally asking, "Talk. Who sent you?"

"Mr. Johnson... we... we..."

Michael impatiently beat them again.

Finally, one of them broke, kneeling before Michael. "Mr. Johnson, I'll talk, I'll talk. It was Elysia. She sent us. But Elysia said it was your order."

So that was the answer after all.

Michael staggered backward. He wanted to curse, but in the end, he was so furious that his lips twisted into something almost resembling a laugh.

Elysia. It really was Elysia...

Michael drove back to the hospital. On the way, even he didn't know whether he should confront Elysia first or apologize to Evelyn.

Just as he arrived at the hospital entrance and parked, Chase called.

"Mr. Johnson, the past is hard to investigate, but I got surveillance footage. I've sent it to you. Take a look."

After hanging up, Michael opened the video Chase had sent.

The surveillance was from outside his Haven Sky Residences home. The footage showed...

Elysia in pajamas, returning from Evelyn's home to his.

The first time he watched it, Michael didn't catch anything. But the second time, he noticed what Elysia was holding.

A bracelet. The very bracelet he'd given his lifesaver years ago.

Elysia had taken that bracelet from Evelyn's place?

So the person who'd saved him all those years ago was Evelyn, not Elysia?

Crushing regret washed over him.

Michael rushed to Evelyn's hospital room as fast as he could, desperate to see her.

Before his hand reached the door handle, Lavern emerged and, without a word, punched him in the face.

Michael didn't fight back. He let Lavern beat him.

When Lavern finally stopped, Michael wiped the blood from his face. "The baby Evelyn's carrying is mine."

Lavern laughed. "Oh, now you know it's yours? Too late. When Evelyn wakes up, I'm going to propose. She and I will be together forever. When that baby is born, they'll only call me Dad. Everyone else will just be 'uncle.'"
