Chapter 285: Evelyn, You Are Pregnant
Chapter 285: Evelyn, You Are Pregnant
Isadora stomped her foot in frustration.
That Michael—recording their phone calls now? What a jerk.
"I was just... making casual conversation. Evelyn's still young. Of course she'll get married and have kids eventually. When that time comes, you're not seriously going to keep harassing her, are you? That would be way out of line. Anyway, I've got things to do. I have to go."
Isadora hung up quickly.
Michael frowned.
He hadn't actually been recording—he'd just bluffed to see how Isadora would react.
Her explanation seemed reasonable enough on the surface, but something about it still felt off.
His mind drifted back to the pregnancy test he'd seen at Evelyn's place.
She'd asked him if he liked children.
And now Isadora had brought up kids out of nowhere.
These seemingly unrelated details suddenly converged into one possibility he hardly dared believe:
Evelyn was pregnant. And there was a very real chance the baby was his.
Michael couldn't wait any longer. He left his apartment and went straight to Evelyn's door, knocking insistently.
This time, it wasn't Evelyn who answered—it was Lavern.
"Mr. Johnson," Lavern said with mild amusement. "Here to see Evelyn again?"
Michael's eyes darted past him, scanning the apartment.
"Where is she?"
Lavern answered smoothly, "She's in the shower. If you need something, you can tell me. I'll pass it along when she's out."
Michael narrowed his eyes. "It's pretty late. Evelyn's friends all left hours ago. Why are you still here, Mr. Almanza?"
Lavern smiled. "Funny, I was about to say the same thing. It's late, Mr. Johnson. Showing up at Evelyn's door at this hour isn't exactly appropriate, is it?"
"Whatever the case, Evelyn and I were married. We've been as intimate as two people can be. No matter when I show up, it's not inappropriate." Michael emphasized their connection.
Lavern's polite smile didn't waver.
"You said it yourself, Mr. Johnson—you 'were' married. Past tense. Right now, 'I'm' Evelyn's boyfriend. Barging in at this hour without warning... what if Evelyn and I were in the middle of something intimate? We wouldn't exactly have time to answer the door."
The tension between them crackled, neither willing to back down.
Just then, Evelyn's voice drifted from inside. "Who's here this late?"
She walked over, toweling her damp hair, and frowned when she saw Michael. "You again? What do you want now?"
Michael studied her carefully.
Fresh from the shower, Evelyn had changed into loose pajamas.
The style was perfectly ordinary, but seeing her bare shoulders—knowing Lavern had been here the whole time—made his chest tighten with irritation.
"Evelyn, I need to talk to you," Michael said firmly.
"Sorry, Mr. Johnson, but we have nothing to talk about."
Evelyn turned to leave, but Michael grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the elevator.
Lavern moved to intervene, but Michael had already dragged Evelyn inside. The doors slid shut before Lavern could do anything but watch helplessly.
Down in the basement parking garage, Michael hauled Evelyn out of the elevator, shoved her into his car, and drove off.
She glared at him, furious. "Michael, what the hell is wrong with you? Dragging me out here in the middle of the night?"
Michael's gaze dropped to her flat stomach. "Evelyn, are you hiding something from me?"
His stare made her body go rigid.
Did he know?
But she couldn't give herself away. Not now.
Evelyn looked out the window, feigning indifference. "What would I possibly have to hide from you?"
"You're pregnant." Michael's tone left no room for doubt.
Evelyn's entire body froze.
How did he find out?
Panic surged through her, but she kept her voice steady. "I'm not pregnant. Michael, where are you getting these ridiculous rumors?"
"You're really not pregnant?" Michael's voice dripped with skepticism.
Evelyn sighed impatiently. "Michael, are you losing it? Do you need me to tell you I'm pregnant to feel satisfied? Fine. I'm pregnant. And I have no idea who the father is. Happy now?"
Michael had already pulled over to the curb while they were talking.
Now, as Evelyn finished speaking, she reached for the door handle, ready to get out.
Michael caught her wrist.
"What now? I already told you I'm pregnant and that I don't know who the father is. What more do you want?" Evelyn's patience was wearing thin.
Michael tightened his grip. "You're just trying to piss me off. I'm not believing a word you say."
"Then what do you want?" Evelyn shot back.
"I only believe scientific evidence. Right now, you're coming with me to the hospital."
Evelyn bit her lip. "Fine, I was just saying that to make you angry. But I'm really not pregnant. I'm divorced and single—why would I let myself get pregnant? It would ruin my reputation."
Michael stared at her stomach, his voice sharp with warning.
"Evelyn, if I find out you're carrying my child and you hid it from me, gave birth in secret—I will never forgive you."
Evelyn met his eyes coldly. "Mr. Johnson, given our relationship, do you really think I'd have your baby? The best outcome for us is never seeing each other again—not bringing a child with both our DNA into this world."
Just as she finished speaking, Evelyn sneezed.
Michael frowned, eyeing her thin pajamas. He shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
Evelyn tried to refuse.
Michael firmly adjusted it back into place. "Just wear it. I'm the one who dragged you out here. If you catch a cold, you'll just blame me anyway."
He paused, then continued, "It's too late tonight. Tomorrow, you're coming with me to the hospital for a checkup."
Evelyn frowned. "Michael, how narcissistic can you be? You think I'd steal your sperm and secretly get pregnant?"
"I think I have every reason to be confident. After all, plenty of women in Harmony City want to marry me. Plenty want to have my children." Michael's tone was utterly self-assured. "But I'm not accusing you of stealing anything. You wouldn't need to. We slept together. If the protection failed, pregnancy would be perfectly natural."
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Sure, in all of Harmony City, your looks and wealth are top-tier. But those things only attract ordinary women. I'm not interested in your genes or your money. I can get everything I need through my own efforts."
