Shyla’s P.O.V.
“A golden heart has stopped beating, hardworking hands are at rest.
The Moon Goddess has broken my heart just to prove that only She can take the best.
These roses will accompany you in the heaven, Alpha Harrison, where all the good ones stay forever.”
Prince Edith made a speech about my dad at the ceremony, handling all the rituals single-handedly. He arranged the funeral, informed the Alphas and attended the guests, behaving bravely as the calamity struck us.
My dad’s demise in such a short time after my first meeting was truly sorrowful, completely inconsolable. I was heart sick while watching the film of my devastation.
A few days ago, I wasn’t aware of my dad’s presence. And now, Heaven immediately snatched him from me, leaving me unsure whether to scream or cry in my current condition.
The rollercoaster of my emotions finally got an anchor in the name of my father, I was a bit relaxed to know about my origin. Good or not, my stay at the Palace made me realize that I was neither dropped directly from the sky nor my mom was forced to have me.
I was a love child, a memory of my parents’ sincere relationship.
But heaven didn’t digest my happiness, pushing me into an abyss of despair. If it wasn’t for my buddy Moira, I would have gone crazy. She appeared as a savior in the impenetrable darkness.
Beta James was kind enough to bring her for the funeral, she stayed by my side 24/7. Moira took great care of Marcel as well, and fed me forcefully, becoming my strong support.
I felt safe with her, but Beta James requested after three days.
“Apologies, Your Highness. But we need to get back to the pack.”
He explained his tough situation as his responsibilities were calling him to the pack. He was stuck between the duty of a Beta and a friend.
Moira held my hand and spoke in an earnest tone.
“Shyla, let’s go back to the Castle. You can resolve your issues with His Majesty while living there as well.
This Palace isn’t suitable for you.”
She hinted towards my son’s safety, not ready to trust the Werewolves’ security system at all.
“You aren’t in your right mind, and Marcel is just a baby. How can you manage everything on your own?
It’s good to come with us, Shyl.”
Moira moved heaven and earth to convince me to go back, but I didn’t fall for their trap. Maddox had taken the advantage of my vulnerable state and sent Moira, emotionally blackmailing me to comply with his demands.
Firstly, he attacked my dad instead of tackling the situation with a calm approach. Just because of his monstrous rage, my dad was no more. I was perplexed that how could Maddox call himself a three hundred years old lycan with such a fiery temper?
Hardly composing myself, I put on a brave face and refused politely.
“Moira, thank you so much for your sincere offer. But I can’t go.
My dad was murdered, and I have to avenge his honor as his only heir.
Besides, there are numerous official matters here which demand my undivided attention.”
Moira stared at me for the whole time, as if searching for something on my face. She spoke blankly before leaving.
“Shyl, you are changed. Please don’t ruin yourself for titles and politics.
We can be happy without worldly possessions, just like our slave era.”
Beta James asked me to stay in touch, and Moira hugged me for a long time before sitting in the car, stirring something deep in my heart.
Her words reminded me of the time when I was just an ordinary Shyla, free from the burden of responsibilities and expectations. It was great that I had received a lot of love and care after that, but the freedom was nowhere to be found.
Perhaps it was the price of my momentary happiness!
Spending my entire day in the solitude of my room, I replayed the events of the party on repeat mode in my mind, regretting the moment where I couldn’t step up to save my dad.
Maddox and dad were arch enemies, and I was the one who had forced them to have civilized conversation after years. Wasn’t it my duty to maintain the balance between my relationships?
What was I even expecting after endangering my loved ones?
The guilt of being a total failure as a daughter enveloped my existence, drowning me in the ocean of embarrassment. I felt useless despite being a Werewolf Alpha King.
Like, what was the use of this endless power and authority when I couldn’t protect my dad?
The storm of desolation and grief tore down my world, shattering my heart. I was just a failure who had embarrassed her dad in first exam.
But as life went on, the weight of the heavy workload kept me moving in the upcoming days.
My dad’s businesses, finance, dealings, pack matters, everything was a mess after this sudden catastrophe. I worked my ass off to continue the legacy left by my only parent. It was the only thing which gave me relief in tension.
After signing the last bunch of papers, I decided to take a break tonight. Mrs. Lockwood was complaining that I wasn’t spending much time with Marcel. I could be a failed daughter, but history couldn’t repeat itself in my child’s case. It was my promise to put maximum effort into his upbringing.
Compiling the work, my gaze fell on my dad’s writing pad with his name’s stamp, blurring my vision with tears.
My heart clenched as his warm scent lingering in the air haunted me, aching my chest. I sat back in his office chair, feeling his fatherly love. He had given me a lot of memories in his last three days.
A teary smile crept up my face as I remembered our cupcake’s activity that day, my dad praised my talent.
“You are an excellent baker, Shyla. Kids will definitely love your treats.”
We laughed and baked cupcakes for the rescued kids of the orphanage, distributing them in person. Undoubtedly, my dad was a kind Alpha, taking keen interest in ordinary matters. The time we spent together was precious, enveloping me with the warmth of being loved by a parent.
Alas! It was just a momentary relief before a disaster.
My trails of thoughts were abruptly halted by a loud thump on the table, Prince Edith barged into my office furiously.
“Read this file!”
With his face darkened with fury, he was growling nonstop, I immediately realized that there was something fishy. So, I didn’t waste a second and read that report, it was enough to shake the floor below me.
“Autopsy report!”
My mind went blank, tightening my throat. I was startled by the reason for my dad’s death. Prince Edith’s shaky voice sounded heavier than usual as he yelled. His voice was so thunderous, so loud that it was hard to concentrate on what he said,
“Uncle’s heart stopped beating due to a powerful external force, Shyla. Can you tell me about the source of that power?”
He instantly became a different person, just like me, my inner struggle deeply resonated with him. Edith’s eyes warped into a miserable black as he pointed his finger at me.
“Wait!
Wasn’t he your perfect mate, King Maddox Miller, who brutally used his force on a fragile, old man?
How can you sit calmly when he has literally murdered your dad?”
Prince Edith’s anger was justified, he was absolutely right to confront me. Under the strong haze of mate-bond, I was trying to sugarcoat this bitter reality, coming up with thousands of lousy excuses to cover up Maddox’s brutality.
It was like I was fooling myself, closing my eyes in front of a predator, hoping earnestly that he wouldn’t kill me. Edith had asked me earlier to call a werewolf council meeting to discuss my dad’s case, but I delayed it using the excuse of an autopsy report.
And now, it was here, challenging my sanity with naked truth!
It was clearly written in the report under doctors’ conclusion, “Alpha Harrison’s four ribs were broken by a blunt trauma.
One of its pointed pieces plunged into his heart, leading to irreversible damage. He died right after reaching the hospital.”
The memory of my dad’s last moments with me in the ambulance pierced like a silver dagger through my soul, his last wish echoed in my head.
“He killed me, Princess. You must take revenge!”
My body grew hotter as anger curled hot and unstoppable in my gut, like a blazing inferno, burning the foolish Shyla, who had blindly trusted her mate. I had overlooked Maddox’s bloodlust and murderous nature, but enough was enough!
This fire had burnt my home now, making me feel the anguish of all the innocent people who died by his hands. It was proven that he was the murderer, leaving nothing in the dark.
My heart threatened to explode as I made a decision and spoke coldly.
“Prince Edith, take me to my dad’s grave."
