Chapter 79 Assassination attempts
The shot rang loud enough, and the entire crowd fell to the ground. But before they could even hear the shot, the split second before the loud bang erupted, Melissa already felt the bullet swerving through the air.
Maybe it was because there were a series of emotions bustling around and empowering her, the moment the shot was released, her entire body went up like an alarm. It was exactly as if time slowed down for her to catch up, she tilted her entire body backward, and as the bullet started to swerve past her, she realized it was going to crush one of the attendants in the head. She instinctively shot her hand out, blocking its trajectory.
The bullet spun angrily in her hands, its heat tearing a bit of her foreskin open. She winced a bit in pain and she opened her palm and the bullet was right there, almost the size of an index finger. The crowd was awed as they saw the bullet in her hand.
Before they could complete their awe, her five bodyguard team covered her and the two bodyguards of the ambassador covered him too, the entire area descended into pandemonium. The personal guards rushed her into the Hall of Bones. She followed them holding the bullet steadfast in her palm.
They shielded her both from the crowd and any rebounding danger.
"What happened?" she heard Richard say through the comms, his voice filled with anxiety.
"They shot at Melissa," Avalors' voice said, and before he could complete the statement Richard cut him short.
"Where is she?" he said.
"She is okay, she caught the bullet," Beatrice's voice said.
"Caught it?"
"Yeah, it was amazing," she said with a chuckle.
Melissa didn't even realize it till now, but she had done something pretty awesome. She'd caught a bullet in midair. I mean, there was a very rare difference between surviving a gunshot and outright catching it. Though it wasn't her intention, she did that anyway. She smiled to herself, the entire situation instilling confidence in her.
"Anyways, I got the assassin," he said. "Send me two of the sentinels on patrol to take him into custody, I have to get back to Melissa," he said.
"Don't worry about Melissa, secure that assassin, he is our only chance of getting any meaningful information. I am going to Melissa myself." Beatrice said. "Be quick though," she said and the comms disconnected.
Melissa was protected through the flight of stairs and finally opened a steel door to a room labeled, "Protective Detail," the entire room was airtight. The only way in and out was through the steel door in front.
They hadn't stayed for a minute when a knock landed on the steel door and the guards peeped through the small glass hole in there and nodded before opening the door. Melissa sat on the chair in there, placing the bullet on the table as the ambassador and his unit walked in.
"What was that?" he asked her.
"Hell if I know," she replied.
"You don't know?" he said with disgust. "You just had a gunshot at you on your first official public event. This was supposed to be a peace treaty." He spat.
"And what was I supposed to do, beg the assassins to stay at home nicely?" She asked him.
"You don't even have your house in order and you expect the Vance pack to trust the lives of its citizens with you? You can't even safeguard your own."
Melissa raised her eyebrows. "Man, sit the hell down," she said, chuckling. "I was the one who got shot, not you," she informed with an assertive tone. "Do I look dead to you?"
He looked at her and complied, sitting down. His entire emotions were a jumble of fear and distress, Melissa had never met a coward as big as him. His eyes wandered to the bullet on the table and he jolted. "What is that?"
Melissa looked at him with a condescending gaze. "Seriously?" she said, before sighing. "It was the bullet, I caught it," she said.
"You…" he said with fear. "You caught a bullet in mid-air?" he asked. Melissa nodded, dejected about the whole situation.
"Oh, my god!" he exclaimed. "Were you expecting to be shot?"
Melissa suddenly started to sense ill intent all around her, she didn't answer the question of the rambling idiot beside her. She glanced up and looked at the bodyguards. They were all holding their pistol in their hand ready to pull the trigger.
Melissa glanced at the ambassador once with a death glare and he stopped rambling in fear. She jumped forward immediately, kicking the ambassador down from the chair, as her bodyguard turned on her, emptying their gun clips in her direction, but Melissa had already grabbed hold of one of them and he was her shield as they riddled him with bullets.
She clicked her ear comms. "Beatrice, wherever you are, get to the steel door with protective detail on it now, I can't keep myself and the ambassador safe at once," she said.
Beatrice yelled. "What is going on?!"
Melissa could sense she was already running, so she didn't reply. She backed up against the wall, bullets flying beside her and the man being her shield.
Their bullets stopped for a while, they were probably reloading, Melissa didn't care, she tossed the dead man to her side. It landed beside the ambassador and the man let out a deafening scream. The deafening scream was followed by Melissa's roar. She wasn't interested in dying here, she took hold of the man closest to her and tossed him effortlessly against the others. He collided with some and even knocked two of them down, which meant four of them were still standing.
She pointed a gun at one of them, she'd collected it from the one she used as a projectile. He'd just finished loading his magazine, so Melissa naturally felt she would need it more than him. She took two shots, taking down one of them immediately, before she could turn around, one of them already had a gun pointed at her.
He pulled the trigger twice and Melissa dodged both, the second however sinking into her arm instead of her chest. She dropped the gun as pain seeped into her entire body. She fell to the ground, groaning.
"You sure are feisty," one of them said, walking towards her with a gun pointed at her. "I should kill you slower for causing so much trouble," he said.
"If I were you, I'd worry about myself," she grinned.
The door opened slowly and Beatrice was standing at the door with Avalors and Greyhound behind her.
