Chapter 120 - LUNA'S BAGGAGE
Asher
The fight that was about to break out was put to a stop when Martin's phone rang. I can't believe he dared to raise his hands on an Alpha in his territory. Martin only looked at the phone before putting it back in his pocket with a seemingly annoyed expression. I wouldn't lie, I was curious to know who had called him and whether it worsened the situation for me or not.
Why is it that when the day started badly everything else goes down the drain? Of all the days to deal with Martin, it had to be right after Dr. Hann had created a scene! Since I could not release my anger against the psycho earlier than Martin would have to do. “Why are you back here, and without notification for that matter? This is my pack, not somewhere you can walk in and out of as you please.”
I made eye contact with Chris, asking silently why he had not given me a heads up before this old baboon showed up beating his scrawny chest. When I saw him mouth the word phone, I realized it was my fault. After panicking when I was informed about the arrival of the reporters, I left in such a hurry that I forgot to take my phone with me.
"Please leave my pack. Take this opportunity while I am still being reasonable. What you are doing now could be considered trespassing." When they didn't move, I turned to my two betas and the pack warriors. "They seem to like our pack so much it is unfair to make them leave. I don't think a little hospitality will hurt anyone."
"It is good that you still have some...sense." I was more than happy to wipe that smug smile off his face.
I didn't let him speak the last word, but we all knew what he was going to say. "Throw all of them in dungeons! Make sure you search all of them thoroughly before that." How long have I wanted to do that? "Don't forget to search them," I said even louder this time. A prison search is one of the most humiliating things ever done to anyone. I bet none of them thought they would get stripped down and patted by other men when they rushed here.
Martin looked at me as if I had lost my mind. Where else had a council elder been humiliated like this? "What the hell do you think you are doing?" His cheeks turned pink in embarrassment when the domineering voice he was going for turned out shrill. He cleared his throat and tried again, but the result was still the same, so I decided to jump in instead.
"You wanted to stay, didn't you? I am only providing you with accommodation. What is wrong with that?" I made sure I had a serious expression on my face. I took advantage of them trying to fight us for their freedom to segregate them into different prison cells. To be honest, I wanted to throw all of them into the smallest stinkiest one but I needed to get Chris away from them.
I sighed in relief when things finally quietened down. What a stressful morning! It made no sense why everything decided to pour in all at once. I did not want to sound paranoid, but the feeling that someone was manipulating things behind the scenes only grew stronger. I had stepped on too many to specify who exactly was targeting me. My peace and quiet was, however, very short-lived.
"She wants to leave! Alpha Asher, what am I supposed to do?
"Who wants to leave?" Who could make a pack warrior cry like that?
"My mate, she said Thompson Springs is too dangerous." On the night of the viral video, I had gotten to him early enough to ensure his mate did not see anything before he got the balls to confess everything by himself. But in this age of the internet, if one wants to find out something, there will be no stopping them. "I don't want her to leave. What should I do?" I understood his feelings, after waiting for many years he couldn't accept that his mate wanted to leave.
I had said it before but I will say it again, Dr. Hann managed to destroy things even in his absence. "I think you should let Alison talk to her." Jeremy, who had not said anything since the train station, finally had something to say. And as always, his suggestion was better than what anyone could have come up with. Alison was the right person to talk to her.
"Thank you, Alpha." There was a bounce in his step when he left. Hope is such a powerful thing. Alison had changed so much in the past few days. Maybe it is because she has had to take the lead on a lot of things. She may have been the reason why we were in this fight, but it was her taking the lead and talking to people that made this process a lot smoother. Talking to someone with a shared experience is always best.
"Should I get Alison to talk to all of them?"I thought to myself out loud. If one of the women had found out the truth, how long would it take for the rest of them to figure it out? It wasn't just Evans' mate, there were several of my pack members that had mates among them. I didn't want to imagine what it would be like if all of them decided that they wanted to leave.
Who knew that one day I would be sitting in my office planning how to tell a bunch of humans about the existence of werewolves? When I remembered that Dr. Hann had done this to humans to save werewolves. I shivered imagining what their reactions would be once the whole truth was out there. For the first time ever, I wished I had alpha friends I could easily talk to. I had Jeremy and Timothy but it was different.
Speaking of which, my phone was still blowing up with calls, but not knowing whether they were positive or not, I decided to ignore all of them. I wonder why they didn't think about sending me text messages or emails. Maybe they did and I had no idea because I was scared to check those too.
Why wasn't I an ostrich shifter? Wouldn't that be nice? When problems arose, I could just bury my head in the ground and hope for the best. What would they be called? Werestrich? Wereostrich? Birdman?
Alison's voice in the mating link brought me out of my weird thoughts, "I am heading to the pack hospital after this. I figured it would be best to talk to Dr. Hann's victims before it is too late." When did Alison and I get this in sync? I was just thinking of asking her for a favor but it was something she had already decided on doing.
"Thank you."
"There is no need for thanks between us. This is all because of me, after all." No matter what I said, she has never stopped blaming herself. I even asked Mary to talk to her and the result was still the same. What Alison did know, was that I blamed myself too. While she thought we were in this predicament because she moved to my pack, I believed things had stemmed from me not getting rid of Melanie the first time. This was something we might never agree on.
A few hours later, I was beginning to feel like a circus freak. "Asher, can you come to the hospital cafeteria?" That was an easy request, right? Wrong. I ran all the way there thinking there was an emergence only to be met with expectant looks.
For some reason, I started feeling uneasy because of the way they were staring at me. It was later that I realized I should have listened to my gut feeling and sent someone else. "What is going on?"
"They don't believe that humans can turn into wolves, so I want you to do a demonstration for them." A demonstration! Alison wanted me to shift before them. I almost asked her why she didn't do it herself but remembered she was expectant. Shifting wasn't allowed during the course of pregnancy.
"I don't think it is convenient."
"Why? You only need to shift once."
"Will you allow me to be naked in front of other females? My clothes will tear when I shift." I decided to talk to her through the link. I know to the humans we must have looked weird standing there just staring at each other without a word.
Her reply sent all the blood in my body rushing to my cheeks. Why did she have to say it like that? "What? Even Mary had seen you naked, don't you guys shift in the presence of each other all the time?" I had no choice but to accept my fate.
The fear I was expecting when I shifted never came. Maybe it is because they had gone through so many things that they were barely surprised anymore. They instead found the existence of werewolves fascinating. Wasn't this too easy?
I obviously could not keep standing there naked, so, I left the newly shifted wolf to explain everything she knew including mates and what Dr. Hann was really doing. It could be said that that was the only thing that went well on this messed-up day.
