Hunger Unleashed
Hunger Unleashed
The wolves surged forward in a storm of claws and teeth, their growls echoing through the cavern. Elara barely had time to shift before one leaped at her. Her bones snapped and stretched, fur bursting through her skin as her wolf form took over. She collided with the attacker midair, sending both of them rolling across the stone floor.
Aiden shifted beside her, his wolf a fierce blur of gold. Kai followed, launching himself into the pack with a snarl. Lila stayed back, firing arrows into the shadows, each shot hitting a corrupted wolf square in the chest.
But for every wolf they threw aside, two more took its place.
Sylvia stood near the cracked lunar crystal, her body glowing brighter with every passing moment. The shards at her feet pulsed like beating hearts, feeding her strength. The wolves fought not as individuals but as extensions of her will, moving with unnatural precision. Their eyes shone silver, their bodies jerking with moonlight that did not belong to them.
Elara pinned one wolf to the ground, teeth flashing. It snapped at her throat, saliva dripping from its fangs. She hesitated. There was something human still flickering behind its eyes.
That hesitation almost cost her. Another wolf charged from behind, slamming into her side. She skidded across the stone floor, pain flaring through her ribs.
Aiden barked sharply, warning her, fighting off three wolves at once. His fur was streaked with blood, but his stance remained unbroken.
Elara pushed herself to her feet, shaking off the hit. Her breath came fast and uneven. The hunger stirred inside her, rising like a tide. It sensed danger. It sensed opportunity.
Feed, it whispered. You cannot protect them unless you take what is offered.
No. She pushed the thought aside, tightening the grip on her own mind. She had not survived the grove only to surrender now.
But then she saw Lila falter. A wolf tackled her to the ground, claws pinning her shoulders. Lila screamed, trying to push it off, her arrows spilling across the floor.
Elara’s heart lurched.
She moved without thinking, sprinting toward Lila. The hunger surged, finally breaking through her restraint. Silver light burst from her fur as she lunged, slamming into the corrupted wolf with a force she had never felt before. The creature flew across the chamber and crashed into the far wall, its body crumpling.
Elara stood over Lila, her breaths harsh, her vision tinged with bright silver. Her wolf form glowed faintly, as if lit from the inside.
Lila stared up at her, wide eyed. “Elara… your eyes.”
Elara blinked. The hunger pulsed again, sending another wave of heat through her body. “I am in control,” she growled, though she was not sure if she believed it.
Aiden rushed to her side, breathing hard. He lowered his head in warning as another group of wolves approached.
“We’re losing ground,” he growled. “We cannot keep this up.”
Elara looked toward Sylvia. The spirit queen hovered inches above the crystal now, her form almost solid. Her smile was calm and cruel.
“You fight like children,” Sylvia said, her voice echoing through the cavern. “Every moment you struggle, I grow stronger. Soon the moon will open to me fully.”
The crystal pulsed again, sending a wave of cold light through the wolves. They howled in response, their bodies twisting, strengthening.
Elara felt her stomach drop. Sylvia was feeding off the corrupted wolves, and with every kill, her power only grew.
“We have to break the link,” Elara snarled, her voice rough with wolf and hunger.
Kai slammed a wolf to the ground and shouted through the chaos. “You mean destroy the crystal?”
“No,” Elara said. “If the crystal shatters, Sylvia will spread into every wolf connected to the moon. We need to sever her from it, not destroy it.”
Aiden growled, slashing at another wolf. “How do we do that?”
Elara bared her teeth. “By giving the hunger something stronger to feed on.”
Aiden froze, understanding dawning in his eyes. “No. Absolutely not.”
Elara met his gaze with fierce resolve. “It is the only way. The hunger reacts to power. If I draw from Sylvia directly, I can pull her essence from the wolf network before she strengthens too much.”
“That could kill you,” he growled.
“It could kill all of us if I do nothing.”
Sylvia laughed softly. “Such bravery. Such foolishness.”
She raised her hand, and another wave of corrupted wolves poured into the chamber. The ground trembled with the force of their howls.
Elara stepped forward, her wolf form glowing. “Aiden. Kai. Protect Lila. Keep the wolves back.”
Aiden blocked her path with his body, growling deep and low. “I will not let you do this alone.”
“You won’t,” she said. “But you cannot follow me into this part. The hunger reacts to what I feel. If you are too close, it will try to take you too.”
He faltered. His golden eyes softened, but the fear in them sharpened.
“I will come back,” Elara whispered. “I swear it.”
Aiden held her gaze for a long moment, then stepped back slowly, tail low, accepting her choice.
Elara turned toward Sylvia, her heartbeat steadying. The hunger inside her swelled, greedy and fierce.
Sylvia lifted her arms, light gathering around her like a halo. “Come then, child. Let me show you what true power feels like.”
Elara charged.
The crystal flared. The wolves howled. The hunger erupted.
And she plunged straight toward the Queen’s light.
