Chapter 105 – Ash and Silence
Chapter 105 – Ash and Silence
Light.
That was all Louve knew at first—an endless flood of silver-gold light burning so bright it scalded her eyes even shut. It poured through her veins, roared in her ears, seared her lungs until she thought she might combust entirely. The world was gone—only fire and blinding brilliance remained.
And then, silence.
When the light broke at last, the silence was worse than the roar. Louve’s body hit stone with a jarring crack that rattled through her bones. The cavern floor—or what was left of it—heaved beneath her, scorched and split into jagged fault-lines. Heat clung to the air, pressing against her skin, burning, choking.
Her wings flickered, broken feathers of flame guttering. She forced her eyes open.
Everything was ash.
The abyssal walls had collapsed inward, molten rivers smothered under layers of charred black stone. Where once shadows had writhed, now only shivering fragments of smoke curled upward, as if too stunned to reform. The air stank of iron and sulfur, thick with the taste of endings.
Louve staggered to her knees, every muscle trembling. Her chest burned with each breath. The fire inside her still smoldered, but it was faint now—barely more than embers clinging to a dying log.
“Kade.”
The word cracked out of her throat, hoarse, barely more than a whisper. She tried again, louder, desperation sharpening it.
“Kade!”
The silence pressed back.
Her pulse thundered. Panic clawed its way up her throat. She lurched to her feet, staggering across the unstable stone, slipping on ash, stumbling against shards of obsidian. Her wings flared faintly with each step, casting fractured light into the ruins.
“Kade!” she cried again, her voice breaking.
No answer.
\---
The battlefield sprawled like a scar through the abyss. Craters smoldered, pits yawned wide into bottomless black, shards of molten rock jutted like jagged teeth. Louve searched every crevice, her light flickering over broken surfaces, calling his name until her throat burned raw.
She found scraps—pieces of the broken blade glimmering faintly amid the rubble. She knelt, shaking hands brushing the fragments, swallowing against the thickness rising in her chest. His weapon had exploded into light. And if that was all that remained…
“No,” she whispered fiercely, fists clenching around the shards. “You’re not gone. You can’t be.”
The fire in her veins stirred, answering her denial with a weak flicker.
She staggered onward.
\---
The silence weighed heavier the further she moved. Every step seemed to echo too loudly, bouncing back from shattered walls. The abyss itself felt… stunned. Not gone, not dead—she could feel it still, in the way the air shivered, in the tremor beneath the stone—but wounded. Reeling.
And watching.
That knowledge pressed into her mind like cold fingers. Somewhere, beyond sight, the abyss still lingered, coiling, waiting.
But she didn’t care. Not now.
“Kade!” Her cry cracked again, ragged. “If you can hear me—answer!”
For a long, terrible moment, only silence answered.
Then—
A sound.
Faint. Broken.
Her head snapped toward it. A cough.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. She ran, stumbling over debris, fire flickering wildly as hope surged like blood through her veins. She climbed a ridge of shattered rock, scrambled down the far side, and there—
“Kade!”
He lay half-buried in rubble, his body twisted awkwardly, his arm outstretched toward the open. His chest rose and fell faintly, shallow, ragged. Blood matted his hair, stained the stone beneath him. His eyes were closed.
For a moment, the world blurred. Relief and terror tangled, pulling her breath into shuddering gasps.
She dropped to her knees, tearing rocks away with hands that blistered against the heat. Her fire tried to flare, but sputtered weakly, leaving her to rely on her raw strength. She dug, dragged, pulled, until at last she freed him enough to cradle his body in her arms.
“Kade,” she whispered, pressing her forehead to his, her voice breaking. “Stay with me. Please—just stay.”
His chest rose faintly against her arm. A breath. Another.
Alive.
Tears stung her eyes.
\---
But even in that fragile relief, the silence shifted.
The cavern shuddered faintly, a tremor running through the scorched stone. The smoke above thickened, coiling, trembling as if something stirred within it.
Louve’s gut twisted. The abyss was not done.
She looked down at Kade. His face was pale, blood streaking his jaw. He needed time—he needed safety. But there was none left.
Her fire whispered at the edges of her mind. It was faint, but it pulsed still—steady, insistent. A spark that refused to die.
She tightened her arms around Kade, her jaw set.
“If you want us,” she whispered into the silence, her voice low, fierce, “you’ll have to tear us apart again.”
The tremor deepened. The abyss stirred, shadows trembling back toward shape.
And Louve’s fire rose to meet it.
\---
But just as she braced for the next clash, something new cracked through the silence.
Not the abyss. Not Kade.
A voice.
Faint, ancient, almost buried beneath the stone.
You have woken me… and still you burn.
Louve’s breath caught. Her head snapped toward the molten fissure splitting the cavern floor. Light—dull, red, pulsing—beat faintly within it, like a heart buried in stone.
The true core.
She felt it at once—the weight of it, the age, the hunger coiled within. Older than the abyss, deeper than its whispers. Something that had been buried, chained, and now cracked open by their clash.
Her fire surged, instinctive, both drawn and repelled.
The abyss shrieked in the shadows, recoiling from that pulse.
And Louve understood—this was not its ally. This was something else. Something it feared.
Her arms tightened around Kade as she stared into the fissure, light pulsing brighter with each beat.
The voice rose again, faint but inexorable.
Daughter of flame… choose.
The stone beneath her feet trembled, the heat rising until it blistered her skin. The fissure widened, light spilling upward in molten streams.
The abyss shrieked louder, shadows clawing toward her to drown it out.
Louve stood caught between them, Kade’s faint breath against her neck, fire shuddering in her chest.
Ash and silence, abyss and core. Two hungers, two pulls.
Her heart pounded. Her fire burned.
And she whispered, raw and trembling—
“I won’t break.”
The cavern roared in answer, both powers surging toward her at once.
