Chapter 66 Full Moon Transformation
POV: Luna
The howls grow louder.
Closer.
Everyone in the Moon Circle tenses, but the Headmaster's voice cuts through the panic.
"Hold your positions. Do not break the circle."
The standing stones around us begin to glow, pulsing with ancient magic. The Moon Circle isn't just a gathering place. It's a fortress.
"The wards will hold," Professor Cael says calmly. "Continue the ceremony."
But everyone's focus is broken. We're all listening to those howls. Counting them.
Too many.
Way too many.
"Focus," the Headmaster commands. "The moon's power is at its peak. Draw on it. Let it strengthen you."
I try to focus on the moon above, massive and silver and impossibly bright.
And something happens.
The pull I've been feeling intensifies. Not just from the moon. From something deeper.
My Eclipse mark blazes with light so bright several wolves nearby yelp and back away.
"Luna?" Ryder's voice, concerned.
But I can't respond.
Because power is flooding through me. More than I've ever felt. More than during my first shift. More than during any training session.
This is different.
This is what it truly means to be Eclipse.
My wolf form shifts. Grows. My silver fur seems to absorb the moonlight, glowing with its own radiance.
Around me, other wolves stop and stare.
Even the faculty look shocked.
"Impossible," someone whispers.
"She's channeling pure moon magic," Professor Cael says, his voice filled with awe. "Without any training. Without any preparation."
I don't understand what's happening. I just feel... infinite.
Like I could run forever. Fight anything. Protect everyone.
The howls outside the circle continue, but now they sound different. Uncertain. Wary.
They can feel it too. The power radiating from the Moon Circle. From me.
And then, as quickly as it came, the power begins to settle. Not disappearing, but banking like a fire being controlled rather than extinguished.
I'm still glowing faintly, but I can think again. Can breathe.
The other wolves in the circle are backing away slightly, giving me space.
Not out of fear exactly. Out of respect.
Or maybe fear after all.
"The Eclipse bloodline," the Headmaster says quietly. "I've read about this. The ability to channel moon magic directly. But I never thought I'd see it."
"Is she okay?" Ryder asks, moving closer despite the residual energy crackling around me.
"I think so," I manage to say, my wolf voice steadier now.
The howls outside have stopped. Whatever was out there has retreated, scared off by the display of power.
"The ceremony is complete," the Headmaster announces. "Return to your human forms. The danger has passed."
Slowly, everyone begins shifting back.
I'm one of the last, still feeling that immense power thrumming under my skin.
When I finally shift back to human form, I'm exhausted. That surge of magic took everything I had.
My legs give out, and Ryder catches me.
"I've got you," he says softly.
Around us, students are dispersing, talking in excited whispers about what they just witnessed.
"Did you see her?"
"She was glowing."
"Like the moon itself."
Nova pushes through the crowd to reach me. "Luna, that was incredible. And also terrifying. Are you okay?"
"I don't know. I feel... empty. Like something burned through me and left nothing behind."
"That's normal after channeling that much power," Professor Cael says, approaching us. "You'll need rest. Food. Your body needs to recover."
"What happened to me?" I ask.
"You did what Eclipse wolves are meant to do. You channeled the moon's power directly, without a conduit, without preparation. Most wolves need years of training to do even a fraction of what you just accomplished." He pauses. "But it's also dangerous. That much power could have consumed you if you hadn't instinctively known how to release it."
"I didn't know what I was doing."
"That's what makes it even more remarkable." He looks at Ryder. "Get her back to her dorm. Make sure she eats something. She'll need to sleep this off."
Ryder nods and helps me to my feet. I can barely walk.
"I can manage," I protest weakly.
"You can barely stand. Stop being stubborn."
He keeps one arm around me as we walk back through the forest toward the Academy. Nova walks on my other side, ready to catch me if I stumble.
The other students give us a wide berth. Staring. Whispering.
I've never felt more isolated.
"They're scared of me now," I say quietly.
"They're in awe of you," Ryder corrects. "There's a difference."
"Doesn't feel like it."
We reach the main building, and Nova peels off toward the kitchens. "I'll get food and bring it to your room. You just rest."
Ryder helps me up the stairs to the girls' dormitory. We're breaking protocol, but right now nobody seems to care.
When we reach my room, he helps me sit on my bed.
"Thank you," I say. "For catching me. For helping me back."
"Always." He crouches in front of me so we're at eye level. "Luna, what you did tonight... that was extraordinary. But it also painted an even bigger target on your back. Every enemy you have now knows exactly how powerful you are."
"I know."
"And I need you to know that I'm going to do everything in my power to keep you safe. No matter what comes."
There's something in his eyes. Something intense and raw.
"Why?" I whisper. "Why do you care so much?"
He's quiet for a long moment. Then he reaches up and brushes a strand of hair from my face.
"Because when I look at you, I see someone worth protecting. Worth fighting for. Worth..." He stops himself. "Just know that you're not alone in this. Whatever happens, you have me."
My breath catches.
We're so close. His hand is still near my face. His eyes are searching mine.
For a moment, I think he might kiss me.
And for a moment, I think I might let him.
But then Nova's voice echoes from the hallway. "Luna? I've got food!"
Ryder pulls back, the moment broken.
He stands and heads for the door. "Get some rest. I'll see you at training tomorrow."
"Ryder?"
He pauses at the doorway.
"Thank you. For everything."
He smiles slightly. "Don't thank me yet. We still have six days until whatever the Ancient Council warned about arrives."
He leaves just as Nova enters with a tray of food.
She takes one look at my face and grins. "What did I just interrupt?"
"Nothing."
"That was not a nothing face. That was definitely a something face."
"Nova—"
"Fine, fine. I won't push. But for the record, the way he looks at you? That's not just protective mentor energy. That's something else entirely."
I don't know what to say to that.
Because she's right.
And it terrifies me.
I eat the food Nova brought, even though I'm not really hungry. My body needs the fuel.
Then I collapse into bed, still wearing my ceremonial robes, too exhausted to change.
Nova settles into her own bed. "That was really something tonight. I've never seen anything like it."
"It felt like I was on fire from the inside out."
"You looked like it too. In a good way. A scary, powerful, don't-mess-with-me way."
I close my eyes. "I just want things to go back to normal."
"I don't think normal exists for you anymore."
She's probably right.
I drift off to sleep, my body exhausted, my mind still reeling from the power that flowed through me.
The moon's magic. My Eclipse heritage. The weight of it all.
But sleep doesn't bring rest.
Instead, it brings him.
Miguel.
The dream-link activates so violently I gasp in my sleep.
Suddenly I'm not in my bed anymore.
I'm standing in the woods near Miguel's house.
And he's there.
Running.
Terrified.
"Miguel!" I call out.
This time, he hears me.
He spins around, his eyes wide. "Luna? Is that really you?"
"I'm here. I'm in your dream. Or you're in mine. I don't know anymore."
"Something's chasing me." His voice is shaking. "Something fast. I can hear it getting closer."
I look around frantically, but the forest is too dark. Too thick.
"Where are you? In real life, where are you?"
"The old mill. By the creek. I've been hiding here for days but it found me. It always finds me."
"Miguel, you need to—"
A howl cuts through the night.
Close. So close.
Miguel's face goes white. "It's here."
And then I see it.
Not a rogue wolf.
Something worse.
Something that moves too fast to see clearly.
All I catch is a glimpse of red eyes and shadows.
"RUN!" I scream.
But Miguel is frozen. Too scared to move.
The creature is closing in.
And I'm trapped in the dream, unable to help him.
Unable to do anything but watch.
