Chapter 42 Unexpected Ally

Chapter 42 Unexpected Ally
POV: LUNA
The council meeting was shorter than I expected. Twenty minutes of questions about what I'd found in the forbidden zone. What the carvings showed me. What powers had awakened.
I told them everything. Mostly. Left out a few details about the figure who'd blocked my path. About the spy. About how much danger I sensed closing in.
They dismissed me with warnings. Stay out of forbidden areas. Focus on the challenge. Let them handle the bigger threats.
Like I could just turn off my instincts and ignore everything happening around me.
Ryder escorted me back toward the dorms. Silent. Tense. He'd been in the meeting too. Heard everything I'd said. But he hadn't spoken. Hadn't defended me or questioned me.
"You're angry," I said.
"I'm concerned. You went into forbidden territory alone. After everything we've said about the buddy system. About staying safe."
"I needed answers."
"And you got them. Along with the council's attention. Which is the last thing you need right now."
We reached the main courtyard. Students were gathering. Setting up for tonight's challenge. Building the fighting circle. Preparing torches. The whole spectacle.
"I should go prepare," I said.
"Luna."
I turned. Ryder's expression was softer now. Worried instead of angry.
"Be careful tonight. Darius won't play fair. And with everything else happening. With the rogues and the spy and the convergence. There are too many variables. Too many ways this could go wrong."
"I know."
"Just survive. That's all that matters. Forget pride. Forget proving anything. Just survive."
He left. Headed back toward the faculty building. Leaving me alone in the courtyard.
I started toward my dorm. Needing to change. To mentally prepare. To find that center Ryder had taught me about.
"Luna Eclipse."
A voice behind me. Female. Unfamiliar. I turned.
A senior student stood there. Tall. Confident. Dark hair pulled back. Eyes sharp. Assessing. I'd seen her around campus but never spoken to her.
"Can I help you?"
"Actually, I'm here to help you. If you'll listen."
"I don't know you."
"My name's Jasmine. Fourth year. And I know more about what you're facing tonight than you realize."
Jasmine. The one who'd warned me weeks ago. About Darius planning a public challenge. About my sister who'd had an unusual mark and died.
"What do you want?"
"To give you information that might keep you alive. Darius has been planning more than just a straightforward fight. He's got contingencies. Backup plans. Dirty tactics that will humiliate you even if you're stronger."
"Why tell me this?"
"Because I told you before. You remind me of my sister. And I won't watch another gifted wolf get destroyed by pack politics and arrogance."
I glanced around. The courtyard was filling up. Students preparing. Faculty overseeing. Anyone could be listening. Anyone could be the spy.
"We should talk somewhere private," Jasmine said. She gestured toward the forest edge. Away from crowds. Away from ears.
Every instinct screamed not to go. Not to trust. Not to put myself in another vulnerable position.
But I needed every advantage I could get. And Jasmine had been right before. About the challenge. About Darius.
"Fine. But make it quick."
We walked to the forest edge. Far enough for privacy. Close enough to campus for safety. Jasmine leaned against a tree. Casual. But her eyes never stopped scanning. Watching for threats.
"Darius plans to provoke your wolf during the fight," she said. "Push you into losing control. Make you look feral. Dangerous. Unfit for the academy. Even if you win the physical fight, you lose the political one."
"How do I stop that?"
"You don't take the bait. No matter what he says. What he does. How he pushes. You stay human. Stay in control. Show everyone you're more than just instinct and power."
"Easier said than done."
"It is. But you've been training with Ryder. Learning control techniques. Use them. Trust them. And remember why you're fighting. Not to prove Darius wrong. But to protect the people you care about."
She pushed off the tree. Moved closer. Her voice dropping lower.
"There's more you need to know. About Silverwood. About the packs. About why Eclipse wolves are so feared."
"I thought we were guardians. Protectors."
"You are. But you're also dangerous. Your bloodline doesn't just guard the seal. It has the power to break it. To unleash what's locked away. That's why so many packs want you dead or controlled. Because an Eclipse wolf who goes rogue. Who loses themselves to grief or anger or corruption. They become the thing they're supposed to guard against."
My stomach twisted. "So I'm not just a target because of what I protect. I'm a target because of what I could become."
"Exactly. And tonight, Darius will try to push you toward that darkness. Toward loss of control. Toward proving you're too dangerous to exist."
"How do you know all this?"
Jasmine's expression shifted. Sadder. Older. "Because my sister went through the same thing. Different circumstances. Same pattern. They pushed her. Provoked her. Made her feel like a monster. And when she finally lost control. When she finally became what they accused her of being. They killed her for it."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Be smart. Learn from her mistakes. Stay in control. Stay human. Even when your wolf wants to rip Darius apart."
"Is there anything else? Any other tricks he's planning?"
"He'll have supporters in the crowd. People shouting. Distracting. Trying to break your focus. Ignore them. Tune them out. The only person in that circle who matters is you. Not Darius. Not the crowd. Just you and your ability to stay centered."
She handed me a small stone. Smooth. Warm. Carved with a simple rune.
"This was my sister's. A focus stone. When things get overwhelming. When the noise gets too loud. Hold this. Let it remind you of why you're fighting. Who you're fighting for. It won't give you power. But it'll help you remember yours."
I took the stone. Closed my fist around it. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. Survive tonight. Then you can thank me."
Jasmine started to leave. Then stopped. Turned back.
"One more thing. The spy everyone's looking for. The one feeding information to Darius and whoever's orchestrating the rogue attacks. They'll be at the challenge tonight. Watching. Recording. Looking for weaknesses. Stay alert. Trust no one completely."
She walked away. Disappearing into the growing crowd of students preparing for tonight.
I stood alone at the forest edge. Holding the focus stone. Processing everything she'd told me.
Darius had traps planned. The spy would be watching. My own bloodline made me dangerous. And I had to stay in control through all of it.
No pressure.
I started back toward my dorm. The stone warm in my hand. A reminder. An anchor. A gift from someone who'd lost her sister to the same darkness I was fighting.
"Luna."
A whisper. My name. Soft. Coming from behind me. From the trees.
I spun. Heart racing. Hand going to my mark instinctively.
Nothing. Just trees and shadows and fading daylight.
"Hello?"
Silence. No movement. No presence. Just that lingering sense that someone had been there. Had whispered. Had vanished.
I scanned the area. Using wolf senses. Looking for heat signatures. Scent trails. Anything.
Nothing. Like they'd never existed.
But I'd heard it. I knew I'd heard it. Someone calling my name from the shadows.
The spy. The watcher. The shadow that had been following me for weeks.
They were still here. Still tracking. Still observing. Making sure I knew I was never alone. Never unwatched. Never safe.
I clutched the focus stone tighter. Headed back to campus. The challenge was in two hours. I needed to prepare. To center myself. To be ready for whatever came next.
But that whisper lingered. My name spoken from nowhere. A reminder that even when I thought I was alone. Even when I thought I was safe.
Someone was always watching.
