Chapter 23 Luna's Secret Power
POV: LUNA
Luna couldn't focus in class. Professor Cael droned on about magical theory. Something about energy channels and proper meditation techniques.
All Luna could think about was Darius's threat. And Miguel. And those damn texts.
"Miss Eclipse."
Luna's head snapped up. "Yes?"
"I asked you to identify the primary chakra point for transformation magic."
"Solar plexus."
Cael's eyebrow raised. "Correct. Though I'd appreciate your attention during the explanation of why."
"Sorry."
The rest of class crawled by. When it finally ended, Nova caught up with her in the hall.
"You okay? You look like death."
"Didn't sleep."
"Still thinking about Miguel?"
"And Darius. And everything else."
"You need a distraction. Something to clear your head."
Luna didn't want a distraction. She wanted answers. But Nova was right. She was spiraling.
"What kind of distraction?"
"Forest exercise this afternoon. Thorne is having us track a rogue creature. Practical application stuff. Gets you out of your head."
Luna hesitated. After yesterday's incident with the watchers, the forest felt dangerous.
But staying on campus meant risking another confrontation with Darius. And she needed to practice her tracking anyway.
"Fine. When?"
"Two hours. Meet at the north gate."
The group assembled at the gate. Twenty students. Professor Thorne stood with arms crossed.
"Listen up. We've got a rogue wolf loose in sector three. Young. Recently turned. Scared and unpredictable. Your job is to track it. Corner it. And bring it back without injury. To you or the target."
He pointed to a map. "You'll work in pairs. Stay within designated boundaries. Use your training. And for the love of the goddess, don't do anything stupid."
Students paired off. Luna ended up with Marcus. The quiet gamma from her combat class. He nodded at her but didn't speak.
They headed into the forest. Luna let her wolf senses rise. Not shifting. Just enhancing. Smell. Hearing. Sight.
The forest was different during the day. Less ominous. But still watchful.
Marcus proved surprisingly competent. He moved quietly. Read signs Luna would have missed. After twenty minutes, he stopped.
"Here."
Fresh tracks. Clawed. Uneven gait. The rogue had passed through recently.
"How long ago?"
"Ten minutes. Maybe less."
They followed. The trail led deeper. Away from designated boundaries. Into denser undergrowth.
Luna's mark pulsed. Warning. But they were close. She could feel it.
Marcus held up a hand. Stop.
There. Thirty yards ahead. Movement. A young wolf. Gray fur. Ribs showing. Eyes wild with fear and hunger.
"Easy," Marcus whispered. "We circle around. Cut off its escape. Force it back toward the others."
But the rogue had already sensed them. It turned. Snarled. Backed away.
Luna stepped forward slowly. "We're not going to hurt you."
The wolf's ears flattened. Its hackles raised.
"Luna," Marcus warned. "Don't get too close."
"It's scared. If we spook it, it'll bolt. Or attack."
The rogue growled. Low. Threatening.
Luna's wolf responded. Rising without permission. Her vision sharpened. Her muscles tensed. The shift wanted to happen.
"No," she muttered. "Not now."
But the rogue charged. Fast. Desperate.
Luna reacted on instinct. Her wolf surged. Not a partial shift. Full.
One second she was human. The next, four legs. Fur. Fangs.
The transformation hit like lightning. Violent. Complete. Overwhelming.
Luna's human mind struggled to keep control. But the wolf was stronger. Faster. More certain.
The rogue tried to dodge. Luna was faster. She intercepted. Slammed the smaller wolf to the ground. Pinned it with strength that shouldn't have been possible.
The rogue whimpered. Submitted instantly.
Luna's wolf wanted to press harder. To establish dominance completely. To show this territory belonged to her.
"Luna!" Marcus's voice. Distant. Muffled.
She shook her head. Tried to remember she was human. That this wasn't an enemy. Just a scared kid who'd lost control.
The shift reversed. Slower than it started. Painful. Like being pulled backward through ice.
Luna collapsed beside the rogue. Human again. Gasping. Shaking.
The rogue scrambled away but didn't run. It watched her. Cautious but no longer terrified.
"Holy shit," Marcus breathed. "That was your first full shift?"
Luna nodded. She couldn't speak yet. Her throat felt raw. Her body ached everywhere.
"You just dominated a rogue without training. Without preparation. Most first years can barely hold a partial shift for five minutes."
"Is that bad?"
"It's incredible. And terrifying."
Footsteps crashed through the undergrowth. Ryder appeared. Took in the scene. The submissive rogue. Luna on the ground. Marcus standing guard.
"What happened?"
"She shifted," Marcus said. "Fully. Took down the rogue in seconds."
Ryder's expression shifted. Surprise. Then concern. "Everyone okay?"
"We're fine. The rogue's calmer now."
Ryder approached the young wolf. Extended a hand slowly. Let it sniff. Read his intentions.
"You did good," he said to the rogue. "Scared is normal. But you're safe now. We'll get you fed. Trained. You'll be okay."
The rogue's tail wagged slightly. Still wary. But trusting.
Ryder turned to Luna. "You need to stand. Can you do that?"
Luna tried. Her legs wobbled. Ryder caught her arm.
"Take it slow. First full shift takes a lot out of you."
"I didn't mean to. It just happened."
"That's normal. Fear response. But the control you showed? That's not normal. Most first shifters go fully feral. Attack anything that moves. You maintained enough awareness to recognize submission. To stop."
"Didn't feel like control."
"Trust me. It was."
Marcus helped secure the rogue. Used a calming spell to keep it docile. Other students started arriving. Drawn by the commotion.
Nova pushed through the crowd. "Luna! Are you okay? Someone said you shifted."
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine. You look like you're about to pass out."
Ryder guided Luna to a fallen log. Made her sit. "Stay here. Drink this."
He handed her a canteen. Luna drank. Water. Cold. It helped clear her head.
Thorne arrived. Assessed the situation quickly. "Good work. Everyone back to campus. Now."
The group dispersed. Marcus led the rogue. Nova stayed with Luna. Ryder hung back. Watching.
"You did well," he said quietly. "But that kind of power comes with responsibility. And danger."
"What do you mean?"
"Strong wolves attract attention. Challenges. Politics. People will want to test you. To see if you're as powerful as you seem. Or they'll try to control you. Use you."
"Like Darius."
"Darius is one threat. But there are others. Bigger. More dangerous."
Luna's mark pulsed. That warning feeling again. Stronger this time.
She turned. Scanned the forest. Something watched them. Not students. Not faculty.
"Ryder."
"I feel it too."
The presence wasn't visible. But it was there. Predatory. Assessing. Ancient.
"What is that?"
"I don't know. But it's not from Silverwood."
The sensation intensified. Closer. Circling.
Luna's wolf rose again. Ready to shift. To fight.
"Don't," Ryder said. "You're exhausted. If something attacks, you won't be able to defend yourself properly."
"So what do we do?"
"We leave. Now."
They started back. Luna's mark burned. The presence followed. Keeping pace. Staying just out of sight.
Nova noticed. "Something's wrong."
"Keep walking," Ryder said. "Don't look back."
But Luna couldn't help it. She glanced over her shoulder.
For just a second, she saw it. A massive shape. Too large for a normal wolf. Too deliberate for a rogue.
Eyes like burning coals. Smoke curling from its mouth.
Then it vanished. Like it was never there.
Luna stumbled. Ryder caught her.
"What was that?"
"Something that shouldn't be here. Something old."
They reached the campus boundary. The wards hummed. Active. Protective.
The presence stopped. Unable or unwilling to cross.
Luna looked back one more time. Nothing visible. But she felt its gaze. Cold. Calculating. Patient.
"It's waiting," she whispered.
"For what?"
Luna's mark pulsed. The answer settled in her bones like ice.
"For me."
