Chapter 223 Shadow Sisters Strike
POV: Luna
Caleb reached the dormitories just as the stealth attack began. I felt it through our connection, through the bond that was forming whether we acknowledged it or not. He was fighting, protecting, saving the younger students just like Miguel always had.
But we had our own problems. While Caleb handled the stealth team, the main rogue assault continued with devastating force. And then I felt them. The Shadow Sisters, using the chaos of the wolf attack as cover to infiltrate Silverwood's grounds.
"They're here!" I shouted to my pack. "Shadow Sisters! Using the battle as distraction!"
"Where?" Liam demanded, fighting beside me while tracking multiple threats simultaneously.
"Everywhere. They've split up. Targeting key locations. Wards. Supply buildings. Medical wing. They're trying to cripple our infrastructure while we're focused on the rogues."
"Divide and conquer," Aria realized. "Classic military tactic. We can't defend everything at once."
"Then we prioritize," I decided. "Nova, Aria, take the wards. Keep them stable. Sienna, Lyric, protect the medical wing. Liam and I will handle the Shadow Sisters directly."
My pack split up, each team heading to their assigned location. Through the pack bonds, I felt their determination, their readiness, their absolute refusal to let Silverwood fall.
Liam and I tracked the nearest Shadow Sister. Found her attempting to corrupt one of the defensive ward anchors, her dark magic pulsing with malicious intent.
"Stop!" I ordered.
She turned, smiling. It was Vivian, the leader, the one who'd challenged me before.
"Luna Eclipse," she said. "Right on time. I was hoping you'd come. Makes this so much more satisfying."
"You're working with the rogues. With the architects. Betraying everything Silverwood stands for."
"I'm working for the future. For change. For power that doesn't bow to outdated hierarchies and corrupt councils. Cole promised us that future. We're just helping him deliver it."
She attacked. Dark magic flowing, corrupting, destroying. I countered with Eclipse power, purifying, cleansing, protecting. Our magic clashed, creating shockwaves that rattled nearby buildings.
Liam circled, looking for an opening. He couldn't engage directly without risking dark magic corruption, but he could provide support, create distractions, protect my vulnerabilities.
Through the mate bond, we coordinated perfectly. I engaged magically while he positioned physically, creating a two-front assault that Vivian couldn't fully counter.
But she was strong. Skilled. More powerful than I'd anticipated. Her dark magic had grown, evolved, become something terrible and impressive simultaneously.
"You can't win," she taunted. "Not against all of us. Not against what's coming. Cole's return is inevitable. His victory is certain. You're just delaying the inevitable."
"I've been delaying the inevitable my entire life," I replied. "It's kind of my specialty."
I channeled more Eclipse power, overwhelming her defenses, forcing her backward. She stumbled, lost concentration, gave Liam the opening he needed.
He struck. Physical attack combined with Alpha authority, disrupting her magical focus enough for me to land a decisive blow.
Vivian went down. Not dead. Not defeated permanently. But neutralized for now, unable to continue fighting.
Then Caleb appeared, returning from the dormitories. His clothes were torn, blood on his face, but his eyes were clear and focused.
"Students are safe," he reported. "Stealth team eliminated. But there are more Shadow Sisters. At least four more, scattered across campus, all working on different sabotage missions."
"Can you track them?" I asked.
"Already am. Their magical signatures are distinct. Corrupted. Easy to follow once you know what you're looking for."
"Then lead the way."
We ran together, tracking Shadow Sisters across campus. Caleb's precision was unnervingly similar to Miguel's combat style. He anticipated their movements, predicted their tactics, countered their strategies with moves that Miguel had perfected years ago.
Through my Eclipse mark, I felt the truth reinforcing itself with every action. This was Miguel. Not just in spirit. In skill. In instinct. In every way that mattered.
Liam noticed my distraction. Through the mate bond, he felt my attention splitting, my focus wavering, my heart pulling toward Caleb even in the middle of battle.
"Luna," he said quietly. "Stay focused. We can deal with emotions later. Right now, we fight."
He was right. I pushed the confusion aside, concentrated on the immediate threat, let instinct guide me instead of emotion.
We found the next Shadow Sister attempting to poison the water supply. Stopped her. Found another corrupting the library's protective wards. Neutralized her. Found a third planting dark magic seeds throughout the gardens. Eliminated the threat.
Each battle was brutal. Exhausting. Desperate. But we won. Every time. Through teamwork. Through determination. Through refusal to fall.
Finally, we cornered the last Shadow Sister. The youngest. The one who'd warned me about Cole's return. She wasn't fighting. Just watching. Waiting.
"I told you," she said. "I told you they were planning this. I tried to warn you. But you couldn't stop it. No one can stop what's coming."
"Why help them?" I asked. "Why betray Silverwood? Why choose destruction over growth?"
"Because I'm scared. Because they're powerful. Because refusing them means death. At least this way, I might survive. Might have a place in whatever world Cole creates."
"That's not survival. That's surrender. And you're better than that."
"Am I? How do you know? You don't know me. Don't know my past. Don't know what I've survived to get here."
"I know you warned me. Took a risk. Showed courage. That counts for something. That means you're not lost. Not yet."
She looked at me. Really looked. Seeing something she hadn't expected.
"If I help you. If I testify against the others. If I provide information about their plans. Will you protect me? Keep me safe from retaliation?"
"Yes. Absolutely. You have my word."
Through my Eclipse mark, she felt my sincerity. My honesty. My absolute conviction.
"Okay," she said. "I'll help. I'll tell you everything. Just please. Keep me safe."
We secured her. Brought her to the Headmaster. She talked. Revealed everything. The Shadow Sisters' full plan. Their coordination with rogues. Their communication with Cole's shadow. Their ultimate goal.
It was worse than we'd feared. Better than we'd hoped. We had information. Intelligence. Advantage.
But we also had confirmation. Cole was coming. Soon. With overwhelming force. With devastating power. With absolute certainty of victory.
And hidden in the chaos, planted during the battle while we were distracted, one Shadow Sister had succeeded in her mission.
A magical trap. Linked directly to Cole's lingering shadow. Embedded deep in Silverwood's foundation. Waiting. Growing. Building toward activation.
We found it too late. Hours after the battle. Hidden so well that even Sienna's magical scans hadn't detected it initially.
"What does it do?" I asked, staring at the pulsing dark sigil.
"I don't know," Sienna admitted. "But it's connected to Cole. Drawing power from his shadow. Building toward something. Probably activation when he returns. Creating optimal conditions for his manifestation."
"Can we remove it?"
"Maybe. But it's sophisticated. Protected. Removing it wrong could trigger it early. Or worse. Could destroy the foundation it's embedded in. Bring down half of Silverwood."
"So we leave it?"
"For now. We monitor. We study. We prepare. And when we understand it fully, we disarm it. Carefully. Precisely. Perfectly."
It wasn't ideal. But it was reality. Sometimes survival meant living with threats. Managing dangers. Accepting imperfect solutions.
The battle was over. The rogues had retreated. The Shadow Sisters were captured or neutralized. Students were safe. Silverwood still stood.
But the trap remained. Cole's influence persisted. The final confrontation approached.
And we were running out of time to prepare.
