Chapter 212 Cafeteria Politics

Chapter 212 Cafeteria Politics
POV: Luna
\[Earlier That Day - Before Midnight Training\]
Lunch was usually peaceful. Social. Normal.
Not today.
I entered the cafeteria and felt it immediately. Tension. Hostility. Judgment.
Students staring. Whispering. Gossiping.
"What's going on?" I asked Nova.
"Shadow Sisters. They've been spreading rumors. All morning. About you. About Caleb."
"What kind of rumors?"
"That you're cheating on Liam. That you and Caleb are secretly involved. That you're dishonoring the mate bond. That you're becoming exactly like the wolves you claim to be better than."
My blood boiled. "That's ridiculous. Caleb and I are friends. Colleagues. Nothing more."
"We know that. But not everyone does. And the Shadow Sisters are convincing. Detailed. Creating narrative that seems plausible."
"I need to address this. Publicly. Set the record straight."
"That might make it worse. Acknowledging rumors gives them power. Legitimacy."
"Ignoring them lets lies spread unchallenged."
Before I could decide, Selene stood. Addressing the entire cafeteria.
"Attention everyone," she said. Royal voice. Commanding. Authoritative. "I've heard the rumors circulating about Luna Eclipse. About her alleged relationship with Caleb Webber. I'm here to state, publicly and officially, that these rumors are false. Malicious. Designed to undermine Luna's authority and character."
The cafeteria fell silent. Everyone listening.
"Luna Eclipse has saved this school repeatedly. Protected students. Defeated conspiracies. Sacrificed continuously. She deserves respect. Gratitude. Not gossip. Not judgment. Not character assassination based on lies."
"How do you know they're lies?" someone called out. Probably a Shadow Sister.
"Because I know Luna. Trust her. Stand beside her. And I've seen no evidence of impropriety. Just collaboration. Friendship. Mutual respect between two powerful wolves working toward common goals."
Some students nodded. Agreeing. Supporting.
Others looked skeptical. Unconvinced. Suspicious.
"The Shadow Sisters want to divide us," Selene continued. "Want to create conflict. Want to weaken Luna's pack. Don't let them. Don't fall for manipulation. Think critically. Question sources. Demand evidence before accepting accusations."
She sat down. The cafeteria buzzed. Discussing. Debating. Choosing sides.
"Thank you," I told her through the Guardian Bond.
"You're welcome. Though I may have made things worse. Political ripples. Students forced to choose. Alliances tested."
"Better open conflict than hidden resentment."
Liam approached the Shadow Sisters' table. Controlled anger radiating.
"You need to stop," he said. "The rumors. The lies. The character assassination. Stop. Now."
"We're just sharing observations," Vivian replied innocently. "Noting behaviors. Patterns. Connections. Is that against the rules?"
"Spreading malicious lies is against every rule. Moral. Social. Ethical."
"We're not lying. We're interpreting. Luna spends considerable time with Caleb. Alone. Training. Planning. Coordinating. Observers might conclude intimacy. We're just voicing what others think."
"You're manipulating. Twisting. Creating narrative from innocent interactions."
"Are they innocent? How do you know? You're not always there. Not always watching. Maybe things happen when you're absent. Maybe Luna has secrets."
Liam's control slipped. He grabbed the table. Lifted. Nearly flipped it.
"Enough!" Professor Thorne appeared. "Mr. Castellan. Step back. Miss Vivian. Outside. Now. Both of you."
Faculty intervened. Separated them. Prevented violence.
But the damage was done. Lines drawn. Conflict escalated.
I found Caleb afterward. Watching from across the cafeteria. Assessing. Analyzing.
"You saw everything," I said.
"I did. And I made notes. Who supported you. Who questioned. Who stayed neutral. Strategic information. Valuable in coming conflicts."
"You think tactically. Always analyzing. Always planning."
"I think survival. Protection. Optimization. Same as you. Same as Miguel always did."
There it was. Acknowledgment. Almost confirmation.
"Why did you say that? Why reference Miguel specifically?"
"Because it's relevant. True. Important. You see the similarities. Feel the recognition. Deserve acknowledgment. Even if I can't fully confirm yet."
"When, Caleb? When will you stop being cryptic? Stop holding back? Stop making me guess?"
"Soon. I promise. When Cole returns. When the final battle begins. When you need all your allies. All your strength. All your truth. Then I'll tell you everything. Reveal everything. Become everything you already suspect."
"That's not good enough."
"It has to be. For now. Please. Trust me. Just a little longer."
He left. Leaving me frustrated. Certain. Desperate for confirmation that wouldn't come.
That evening, Vivian approached me directly. Bold. Confident. Threatening.
"Cole sends his regards," she said. "He's very interested in your new friend. The mysterious Caleb Webber. Wants to know who he really is. Where he came from. Why he's here. Cole has theories. Suspicions. Plans."
"Cole is in maximum security. He can't know anything. Can't plan anything."
"Can't he? Cole has resources. Connections. Allies. Even imprisoned, he sees. Hears. Knows. And he's very interested in disrupting your life. Your bonds. Your certainties. Caleb is perfect leverage. Perfect weapon. Perfect opportunity."
"Stay away from Caleb."
"Or what? You'll fight me again? Prove your superiority again? That worked so well last time. Really endeared you to everyone."
"I'll do whatever necessary to protect my pack. My friends. My allies. Including Caleb."
"Including your returned lover? Your reincarnated ex-boyfriend? Your impossible second chance? Because that's what he is, isn't it? Miguel. Back from the dead. Reformed. Returned. Impossible but undeniable."
My blood ran cold. "How do you know that?"
"Cole knows. Figured it out. Analyzed the patterns. Drew conclusions. And he's fascinated. Wants to use it. Exploit it. Destroy it. And you. When he returns. When he attacks. Caleb's identity will be his weapon. Your weakness. Your downfall."
She walked away. Smiling. Victorious. Threatening.
Leaving me terrified. Exposed. Vulnerable.
Cole knew. About Caleb. About Miguel. About everything.
And he was planning to use it against me.
Soon. Very soon. When he returned.
Everything would explode. Everyone would know. Everything would change.
And I had no idea how to prepare. How to protect. How to survive.
The revelation was coming. Ready or not.
