Chapter 178 Unexpected Ally Joins Battle

Chapter 178 Unexpected Ally Joins Battle
POV: Luna
We were heading back to campus when the ambush happened.
Different rogues. Fresh. Well-rested. Unlike us.
"They're not giving up!" Nova shouted.
"They're desperate!" I replied. "Cole's losing resources! This is a last-ditch effort!"
We fought. Exhausted but determined.
I channeled what little Eclipse power I had left. It wasn't much. Barely enough to defend myself.
Liam was beside me. Protecting. Supporting. Equally drained.
We were losing. Slowly. Painfully.
Then something unexpected happened.
A figure appeared. Cloaked. Hooded. Radiating powerful magic.
They attacked the rogues with devastating precision.
Spells I'd never seen. Techniques that shouldn't exist.
Within minutes, the rogues were defeated. Destroyed. Gone.
The figure turned toward us.
"Who are you?" the Headmaster demanded.
"A friend," a female voice said. "Or at least, not an enemy."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer you're getting."
The figure approached Selene. "You. Princess. Your power is remarkable. But uncontrolled. Dangerous."
"I'm working on it," Selene said defensively.
"Work faster. You have potential. But potential means nothing if you can't harness it."
"Who are you to judge?"
"Someone who's survived longer than you've been alive. Someone who's seen royal magic at its peak. You're not there yet. But you could be."
The figure raised a hand. Magic flowed from them to Selene.
Gentle. Guiding. Teaching.
"Feel that? That's how you channel royal magic. Not explosively. Not desperately. Smoothly. Naturally."
Selene's eyes widened. "I can feel it. The technique. It's like you're showing me directly."
"I am. Pay attention. Remember this feeling. Replicate it."
The magic faded. The figure stepped back.
"Better," they said. "Practice that. Master it. Before your power masters you."
"Thank you," Selene said. "But why help us?"
"Because you're fighting the right enemy. And I have my own reasons for wanting them stopped."
"The architects," I realized.
"Among others. The conspiracy is deeper than you know. Older. More dangerous."
"Then help us! Tell us what you know!"
"I've already helped. More than I should. Now I must go."
"Wait!" Liam said. "Who sent you? Who are you working for?"
The figure paused. Seemed to consider.
"I work for no one. But I answer to balance. And the architects threaten that balance."
"That's cryptic."
"That's intentional."
The figure started to fade. Teleporting away.
But as they disappeared, something fell. A small object. Deliberate.
I picked it up. A coin. Old. Engraved with symbols I recognized.
"That's Cole's family crest," Sienna breathed.
"Why would they leave this?" Aria asked.
"A clue," Liam said. "They want us to investigate Cole's family. His background."
"Why not just tell us?"
"Because maybe they can't. Or maybe they want us to discover it ourselves."
"Either way, we have a lead."
We returned to campus. Exhausted. Battered. But alive.
The Headmaster examined the coin. "This is definitely Thornheart clan. Cole's bloodline. But there's more. These symbols. They're ancient. Pre-kingdom. From the Great Pack Wars era."
"What do they mean?" I asked.
"I don't know. But I know someone who might. An archivist. Specializes in pack histories. She's retired. Lives off campus. But she might help."
"We should visit her. Tomorrow. After we rest."
"Agreed. But be careful. If the mysterious figure led you to this information, there's a reason. It might be helpful. Or it might be a trap."
"Everything's a trap these days."
"True. But some traps are worth springing."
That night, I couldn't sleep. Too much on my mind.
The mysterious figure. The coin. Cole's family history.
And the technique the figure had shared with Selene. That level of skill. That depth of knowledge.
Who were they?
Liam found me on the roof. Our usual spot.
"Can't sleep either?" he asked.
"Too much to process."
"Same."
"What do you think? About the mysterious figure?"
"I think they're dangerous. Powerful. And have their own agenda."
"But they helped us."
"They helped Selene. There's a difference. They might be using us. Guiding us toward some goal we don't understand."
"Or they're genuinely trying to help stop the architects."
"Maybe. But I don't trust mysterious figures who won't reveal their identities. That's manipulation. Even if the immediate result is helpful."
"You're suspicious of everyone."
"I'm suspicious of everyone who hides their face and speaks in riddles. That's just common sense."
Fair point.
"What about the coin?" I asked. "Cole's family crest. Why give us that?"
"Because they want us to dig into his past. Find something. But what?"
"Maybe the answer to why he betrayed us. Why he's so committed to the architects' vision."
"Or maybe evidence that connects him to something bigger. Something we haven't figured out yet."
We sat in silence. Thinking. Planning.
"Tomorrow we visit the archivist," I said. "Find out what these symbols mean. Maybe that'll give us answers."
"Or more questions."
"Always with the optimism."
"Someone has to be realistic. You're idealistic enough for both of us."
"I'm not idealistic. I'm hopeful. There's a difference."
"Is there?"
"Yes. Idealism ignores reality. Hope acknowledges it but believes in possibility anyway."
"That's actually profound."
"I have my moments."
He kissed me. Soft. Gentle. Full of love.
Through the mate bond, we shared strength. Comfort. Determination.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges. New dangers. New revelations.
But tonight. Tonight we had this. Each other. Our pack. Our purpose.
And that was enough to keep fighting.
