Chapter 141 Romantic Tension

Chapter 141 Romantic Tension
POV: Luna
The Academy went into lockdown the next day.
Classes were suspended. Students confined to their dorms except for meals and supervised activities.
The Headmaster was questioning everyone connected to Victoria's clan.
Including Cole.
I hadn't seen him since the tower. Didn't know if he was okay or if Victoria had punished him for his betrayal.
Part of me cared. The part that remembered loving him.
But a bigger part was just done. Done with the lies. Done with the manipulation.
Done with being used.
I was in the training room, working out my frustration on a punching bag, when Liam appeared.
"Thought I'd find you here," he said.
"Can't sit still. Too much nervous energy."
"Want a sparring partner?"
"You sure? I'm not exactly gentle right now."
"I can handle it."
We moved to the mat.
No warm-up. No preamble. Just fighting.
He matched me move for move, push for push.
It felt good. Honest. No holding back.
"You're angry," he observed, blocking my strike.
"Wouldn't you be?"
"Absolutely. But anger makes you sloppy."
He proved his point by sweeping my legs.
I hit the mat hard.
Before I could get up, he was there. Offering his hand.
I took it, and the moment our skin touched, my mark flared with heat.
We both gasped.
"What was that?" Liam asked.
"I don't know."
But I did know. Deep down, I knew exactly what it was.
Mate recognition.
I pulled my hand back quickly. "Again. Let's go again."
We fought for another hour. Each time we made contact, the mark reacted.
By the end, we were both breathing hard, covered in sweat.
"You're incredible," Liam said. "The way you move. The way you fight. It's like watching art."
"You're not so bad yourself."
"I know. I'm amazing." He grinned. "But seriously, where did you learn to fight like that?"
"Trial by fire. You either learn or you die."
"That's dark."
"That's my life."
We sat on the bench, cooling down.
"Can I ask you something?" Liam said.
"Sure."
"What's going on with you and Cole?"
My chest tightened. "Nothing. We're done."
"Because of the betrayal?"
"Because of everything. The lies. The manipulation. The fact that he doesn't trust me enough to tell me the truth."
"Do you still love him?"
I thought about it. Really thought about it.
"I loved who I thought he was. But that person might not exist. So I don't know."
"That's honest."
"What about you?" I asked. "Anyone special in your life?"
"Not yet. But I'm hoping."
The way he looked at me when he said it made my heart race.
"Liam—"
"I know. Bad timing. You just got out of a relationship. You're dealing with assassination attempts and conspiracies. I shouldn't push."
"But?"
"But I can't help how I feel. And I feel like we're connected. Have been since the moment we met."
My mark pulsed in agreement.
"I feel it too," I admitted. "But I don't know if I can trust it. My instincts about Cole were wrong. What if I'm wrong about you too?"
"Then test me. Push me. Question me. I'll prove myself."
"That's what Cole said."
"I'm not Cole." He turned to face me fully. "I won't lie to you. Won't manipulate you. If you ask me a question, I'll answer honestly. Even if the answer isn't what you want to hear."
"Okay. Question. Why are you really at Silverwood?"
He didn't hesitate. "My family sent me. They're part of a network that monitors Eclipse wolves. When they heard you were bonded to a princess and potentially in danger, they sent me to protect you."
"So you're here because of me?"
"Yes. But also because I wanted to be. I've been hearing about Luna Eclipse for two years. The girl who defeated Malachar. Who formed pack bonds that should be impossible. Who refused to be controlled by prophecy." He smiled. "I wanted to meet the legend. See if she was real."
"And?"
"You're better than the legend. Braver. Kinder. More human despite all that power."
My face heated. "You're laying it on kind of thick."
"I'm being honest. You asked for honesty."
"I did."
We sat in comfortable silence for a moment.
Then Liam said, "Your wolf. Does she like me?"
"What?"
"Your wolf instincts. The part of you that knows truth. Does she trust me?"
I focused inward, checking with my wolf.
She was calm. Content. Happy even.
Around Liam, my wolf felt safe.
"Yeah," I said. "She likes you."
"Good. Because my wolf really likes you."
"You haven't shifted around me."
"Not yet. But I will. When the time's right."
"Why wait?"
"Because shifting around someone is intimate. Vulnerable. I wanted to make sure you were ready to see all of me."
The way he said it made my stomach flutter.
This was different from Cole. Different from Miguel.
This felt real. Solid. True.
"I think I'm ready," I said quietly.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Liam stood and moved to the center of the mat.
His shift was beautiful. Smooth. Controlled.
His wolf was large. Silver-gray with intelligent blue eyes.
He approached me slowly, giving me time to adjust.
When he got close, he lowered his head. Submissive. Respectful.
I reached out and touched his fur.
My mark exploded with warmth.
The mate bond snapped into place.
Not like the pack bonds. Deeper. More fundamental.
This was what Miguel had meant. What my mark had been calling to.
Liam was my true mate.
He shifted back to human, looking stunned.
"Did you feel that?" he asked.
"The bond? Yeah. I felt it."
"So it's real. We're mates."
"Apparently."
"How do you feel about that?"
"Confused. Scared. Happy. All of it."
"That's fair." He moved closer. "Can I kiss you?"
My heart was racing. "I don't know if that's a good idea."
"Why not?"
"Because once we start, I might not want to stop."
"I'm okay with that."
He leaned in, giving me time to pull away if I wanted.
I didn't pull away.
His lips met mine, gentle at first. Testing.
Then deeper. More certain.
The mate bond sang between us, confirming what we both already knew.
This was right. This was real.
When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless.
"Wow," Liam said.
"Yeah. Wow."
"So what now?"
"I don't know. This is all happening so fast."
"We can take it slow. Figure things out together."
"Liam, I just got out of a relationship. A complicated, messy relationship. I don't want to jump into something new before I've processed the old."
"I get it. And I'm not asking you to. I'm just asking you to let me be here. Let me support you while you figure things out."
"As my mate?"
"As your friend. Your ally. Whatever you need me to be."
I wanted to argue. Wanted to say it was too complicated.
But my wolf was purring. Content in a way she hadn't been in months.
"Okay," I said. "Friends. For now."
"For now works."
We left the training room together.
In the hallway, we ran into my friends.
Nova took one look at us and grinned. "Oh my god. Did you two finally—"
"We're friends," I interrupted.
"Friends who are clearly mates," Aria said. "I can see the bond from here."
"It's new. We're figuring it out."
"Does Cole know?" Sienna asked quietly.
"No. And I don't plan to tell him. Not yet."
"That's going to be messy when he finds out," Lyric warned.
"Everything in my life is messy. This is just one more thing."
We headed to lunch together.
The dining hall was tense. Students whispering about the lockdown. About Victoria's clan being questioned.
I spotted Cole across the room. He looked exhausted. Beaten down.
When our eyes met, I saw pain there. Regret.
But I looked away.
I couldn't deal with him right now. Couldn't process his betrayal while also processing new mate bond with Liam.
After lunch, I was walking Selene back to her suite when she said, "So. Liam."
"What about him?"
"You're mates."
"How did you know?"
"Guardian Bond. I can feel your emotions. And right now, you're experiencing mate-bond euphoria mixed with guilt and confusion."
"That's invasive."
"I know. Sorry."
We walked in silence for a moment.
Then Selene said, "For what it's worth, I think Liam's good for you. He's honest. Straightforward. No hidden agendas."
"Unlike Cole."
"Unlike Cole."
"I thought I knew him, Selene. Thought I could trust him completely."
"People are complicated. Sometimes they do bad things for what they think are good reasons."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"
"No. It's supposed to help you understand. Cole's not pure evil. He's just compromised. Caught between loyalty to his clan and love for you."
"How do you know?"
"Because I've seen it before. In my kingdom. Good people making terrible choices because they feel trapped."
We reached her suite.
Inside, guards were stationed everywhere. The Headmaster wasn't taking chances after the tower incident.
"Thanks for the talk," I said.
"Anytime. That's what friends are for."
I headed back to my dorm, but halfway there, someone grabbed my arm and pulled me into an empty classroom.
Cole.
"We need to talk," he said.
"I don't think we do."
"Luna, please. Just five minutes."
"Fine. Five minutes."
He ran a hand through his hair. "I saw you with Liam. In the training room."
My blood ran cold. "You were spying on us?"
"I was worried about you. Wanted to make sure you were safe."
"That's creepy, not protective."
"I know. I'm sorry. But I needed to know you were okay."
"I'm fine. Better than fine, actually."
Pain flashed across his face. "You're mates. You and Liam."
"How did you—"
"I felt it through our bond. The change. The shift in your emotions."
"That's none of your business."
"It is when it affects our bond. Our relationship."
"We don't have a relationship anymore, Cole. You destroyed that."
"I was trying to protect you!"
"By lying to me? By working with people who want to hurt me?"
"It's not that simple!"
"Then explain it! Right now! No more excuses!"
He looked at me, clearly wrestling with himself.
Finally, he said, "I can't. Not here. Not now. But soon. I promise—"
"Stop promising things you can't deliver!"
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm.
"Luna, wait. There's something you need to know. About Liam."
"What about him?"
"He's not who he says he is. His family, the network he mentioned. They're not protectors. They're collectors."
"What does that mean?"
"They collect powerful wolves. Use them for their own purposes. Liam was sent here to recruit you. To convince you to join their network."
"That's ridiculous."
"Is it? Think about it. He shows up right when you're vulnerable. Right when you're questioning me. He's handsome. Charming. Says all the right things. It's too perfect, Luna."
Doubt crept in. Was Cole right? Was Liam manipulating me too?
"You're lying," I said. "Trying to turn me against him because you're jealous."
"I'm telling you the truth. Finally. Please believe me."
Through our bond, I felt his sincerity.
But I'd felt his sincerity before when he was lying.
"I don't know what to believe anymore," I said.
"Then don't believe anyone. Question everything. Including Liam."
He left, and I stood there, mind racing.
Was Liam manipulating me? Using the mate bond to recruit me?
Or was Cole lying again, trying to isolate me from someone who actually cared?
I didn't know.
And that terrified me.
Later that night, I couldn't sleep.
I kept thinking about Cole's warning. About Liam's too-perfect arrival.
Finally, I got up and went to find him.
He was in the common room, reading.
"Can't sleep either?" he asked.
"No. I need to ask you something."
"Okay."
"Your family. The network. What exactly do they do?"
His expression became guarded. "Why do you ask?"
"Because Cole told me they're collectors. That you're here to recruit me."
Liam was silent for a long moment.
Then he said, "It's not that simple."
My heart sank. "So it's true."
"Parts of it. My family does recruit powerful wolves. We offer protection. Training. Resources."
"In exchange for what?"
"Loyalty. Service. When we need help, recruited wolves are expected to assist."
"So you were sent here to recruit me."
"Initially, yes. But that changed."
"When?"
"The moment I met you. The moment the mate bond snapped into place." He looked at me earnestly. "Luna, I was sent here on a mission. But I'm staying because of you. Because I want to. Not because my family ordered it."
"How do I know you're telling the truth?"
"You don't. You just have to decide if you trust me."
And there it was. The same question I'd faced with Cole.
Trust.
The thing I didn't know how to give anymore.
"I need time," I said.
"Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."
I went back to my dorm, more confused than ever.
Everyone I trusted seemed to have hidden agendas.
How was I supposed to know who was real?
My mark pulsed, warm against my skin.
Miguel's presence was barely there. More memory than spirit.
But I heard his words clearly. Trust your instincts.
My wolf trusted Liam. Felt safe with him.
My wolf had been wary of Cole from the start. I'd just ignored it.
Maybe it was time to start listening to my instincts instead of my heart.
Because my heart kept choosing wrong.
