Chapter 12 Training Intensifies

Chapter 12 Training Intensifies

Luna didn't tell anyone about her suspicions.

Not about the orchestrated test. Not about the figure watching from the shadows. Not about her growing certainty that someone at Silverwood wanted her pushed to breaking point.

She kept her head down. Trained. Studied. Survived.

But everything felt different now.

Two days after the rogue creature trial, Professor Thorne announced a change in training schedule.

"First years who successfully completed the forest test will advance to intermediate training. The rest of you stay here with basic drills."

Luna's stomach dropped. Only three teams had succeeded. Nine students total out of thirty-five first years.

Nine students including her.

"Advanced training meets at the north field. Upperclassmen will be joining you. This is not a reward. This is a test to see if you can handle real pack dynamics. Real competition. Real pressure."

Nova grabbed Luna's arm. "We're splitting up."

"Just for training. We'll still have classes together. Dorm. Everything else."

"But not this. Not the thing that actually matters."

Luna hugged her quickly. "You'll catch up. Next trial, you'll succeed. I know it."

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do. You're stronger than you think."

The nine successful students gathered their gear and headed to the north field. Luna recognized Marcus. A few others she'd seen around. All of them looked nervous.

The north field was smaller than the main training grounds. More isolated. Surrounded by dense forest on three sides.

Upperclassmen were already there. Twenty of them. Third, fourth, and fifth years. All watching the first years with expressions ranging from amusement to disdain.

Darius stood at the front. Arms crossed. Smirking.

Luna's mark pulsed. Warning.

Professor Thorne addressed the combined group. "Advanced training focuses on speed, strength, and control. You'll be pushed harder than basic training. You'll compete directly with students who have years more experience. Some of you will fail. That's expected. But those who succeed will be ready for real combat. Real pack challenges. Real life."

He pointed to a series of obstacles across the field. "Speed trial first. You'll run the course. Shifting is allowed. Encouraged. Fastest time wins. Slowest three get extra conditioning."

Students lined up at the starting mark. Luna ended up between Marcus and a third-year girl who looked like she could crush Luna's skull with one hand.

"On my whistle," Thorne called.

Luna's wolf stirred. Ready. Eager.

The whistle blew.

Everyone took off. Immediately, upperclassmen pulled ahead. They shifted mid-stride. Full wolf form. Faster than Luna had ever seen anyone move.

She pushed harder. Let her wolf rise slightly. Partial shift. Claws extended. Speed increased.

But not enough. She was falling behind.

Marcus passed her. Fully shifted. A small brown wolf running with surprising grace.

Luna's competitive instinct flared. She let her wolf surge higher. More than partial. Almost full.

Her body stretched. Reformed. Fur pushed through skin.

She was shifting. Actually shifting while running.

Her speed doubled. The course blurred. She leaped obstacles without thinking. Her wolf knew exactly what to do.

She passed Marcus. Passed several upperclassmen. Crossed the finish line in the middle of the pack.

Not first. But not last either.

She shifted back to human form. Gasping. Shaking. Exhilarated.

"Did you see that?" someone whispered.

"She shifted mid-course. While running."

"First years can't do that."

Luna looked down at her hands. Still trembling. Still clawed slightly.

She'd done it. Fully shifted. Then shifted back. All while maintaining control.

Ryder appeared at her side. "That was reckless."

"That was what you told me to do. Embrace my instincts."

"I meant during controlled exercises. Not during a speed trial where you could've lost control and hurt someone."

"But I didn't lose control. I maintained it. The whole time."

Ryder's expression was unreadable. "Yes. You did. Which is either impressive or terrifying. I haven't decided which yet."

"Next drill," Thorne called. "Strength test. You'll work in pairs. Alpha ranks, choose your partners."

The upperclassmen immediately partnered with each other. That left the first years to pair up amongst themselves.

Luna looked for Marcus. He was already partnered with another first year.

"Luna Eclipse."

She turned. Darius stood behind her. Still smirking.

"No."

"Professor Thorne said Alphas choose. I'm Alpha. I'm choosing you."

"Choose someone else."

"Can't. You're the only first year here worth the challenge." He raised his voice. "Unless you're scared to partner with me?"

Every eye turned toward them. Watching. Waiting.

Luna's mark burned. But refusing would look weak. Would give Darius exactly what he wanted.

"Fine. Let's go."

The strength test involved grappling. Pure physical force. No shifting. No claws. Just muscle against muscle.

Luna knew she'd lose. Darius was bigger. Stronger. More experienced.

But she refused to make it easy.

They took positions in a marked circle. Thorne explained the rules. Force your opponent out of the ring or pin them for three seconds. First to do so wins.

"Begin."

Darius attacked immediately. No warm-up. No testing. Just pure force.

Luna dodged. Barely. His momentum carried him past her.

She used the opening. Struck his ribs. Not hard enough to hurt but enough to prove she could land hits.

Darius recovered and came at her again. This time she couldn't dodge. He grabbed her arm and pulled her into a grapple.

Luna struggled. Used every technique Ryder had taught her. But Darius was too strong.

He lifted her off her feet. Carried her toward the edge of the ring.

Luna's wolf surged. Protective. Desperate.

She didn't consciously shift. It just happened.

Her body changed. Partial shift. Claws extended. Teeth sharpened. Strength increased.

She broke Darius's grip. Twisted free. Landed on her feet inside the ring.

But her eyes were gold. Her hands were clawed. And everyone was staring.

"That's cheating," someone called. "No shifting allowed."

"I didn't mean to," Luna said. Voice rough. Not quite human.

Darius's smirk widened. "Looks like the Eclipse wolf can't control herself after all."

"Enough," Thorne said. "Luna, shift back. Now."

Luna tried. But her wolf didn't want to retreat. It sensed threat. Wanted to fight.

"Luna." Ryder's voice cut through the chaos. Calm. Steady. "Look at me. Focus. You control your wolf. Not the other way around. Pull her back."

Luna met his eyes. Despite her suspicion. Despite everything. His presence grounded her.

She pulled. Hard. The wolf resisted. But Luna was stronger.

Slowly, the shift reversed. Claws retracted. Eyes returned to normal. Teeth dulled.

When she was fully human again, she swayed. Exhausted. Embarrassed.

"Sorry," she muttered.

"It happens," Thorne said. "But it can't happen again. Loss of control during training is dangerous. For you and everyone around you. Understood?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Take a break. Rest. You're done for today."

Luna walked to the sidelines on shaking legs. Other students whispered as she passed. Some looked impressed. Others looked scared.

She'd proven she was powerful. But she'd also proven she was unstable.

Marcus brought her water. "That was intense."

"That was mortifying."

"It was also incredible. You partially shifted twice in one training session. While maintaining combat effectiveness. Most students can't do that until third year."

"I didn't mean to do it. It just happened."

"Maybe that's your gift. Instinctive shifting. Responding to threat without conscious thought." Marcus sat beside her. "My sister had something similar. She could shift faster than anyone. In combat, it made her nearly unstoppable. But it also made her dangerous when she got scared or angry."

"What happened to her?"

"She graduated. Works for a pack up north now. Security detail for an Alpha. She learned to control it eventually. You will too."

Luna hoped he was right.

She watched the rest of training from the sidelines. Other students continued drills. Ryder worked with upperclassmen on advanced techniques.

And Darius. Darius stood with his group. Talking quietly. Glancing at Luna occasionally.

That smirk never left his face.

He'd gotten exactly what he wanted. Made her lose control. Proven she was unstable. Given fuel to anyone who wanted to challenge her or push her out.

Whatever he was planning, today's display had helped him.

Luna touched her mark. Still warm. Still pulsing.

She needed to be more careful. More controlled.

But she also needed to be ready.

Because Darius's next move was coming.

She could see it in his eyes. In the way he watched her. In the way he talked to his group.

He was planning something. Something bigger than training exercises.

And Luna had no idea how to stop it.
