Chapter 108 Clique Confrontation Redux
POV: Luna
A week after the Council intercepted my letter, classes resume.
Campus is mostly repaired. Wards reinforced. Students back to routine.
But nothing feels routine anymore.
I'm constantly aware of being watched. Monitored. Assessed.
Every move I make is potentially being reported to the Council.
It's suffocating.
Combat practice with Cole is the only time I can almost relax. Almost forget the surveillance.
But even that's complicated now. After our conversation. After the confession of feelings.
There's tension between us. Awareness. Unspoken attraction that makes every interaction charged.
"Focus, Luna," Cole says as I miss a block for the third time. "Your mind is elsewhere."
"Sorry. Just distracted."
"By what?"
"Everything. The Council. The surveillance. The attacks. All of it."
"Then compartmentalize. When you're training, nothing else exists. Just the technique. The movement. The present moment."
"Easier said than done."
"I know. But necessary. Especially now."
We're practicing integrated combat. Wolf and magic simultaneously. The technique I've been developing.
I'm improving. Getting smoother. More natural.
But Cassandra's Circle is in this class too. Watching. Whispering.
I can feel their hostility. Their resentment that I'm still here. Still training. Still thriving despite their efforts to destroy me.
"Pair up for sparring," Cole announces. "No magic. Just combat. I want to see pure technique."
I'm paired with a neutral student again. Someone who doesn't particularly care about Academy politics.
We square off. Begin.
The sparring is controlled. Professional. Both of us demonstrating skill without trying to actually hurt each other.
That's when I feel it.
Someone else's magic. Interfering. Enhancing my partner's strength beyond normal levels.
Not again.
I glance around. Cassandra's Circle. All of them focusing energy toward my partner.
Making them stronger. Faster. Trying to overwhelm me.
"Professor!" I call out.
But the attack comes before Cole can respond.
My partner, enhanced beyond their control, swings hard.
I dodge. Barely.
They stumble. Confused. "I didn't mean to... something's wrong with my magic!"
The Circle keeps pushing. More power. More enhancement.
My partner is going to hurt someone. Themselves or me or someone nearby.
I have to stop this.
I shift partially. Just enough for enhanced reflexes.
And I deflect their attack. Redirect their momentum. Use their enhanced strength against them.
They go down. Gently. Safely. Unhurt.
But everyone saw me shift. Saw the partial transformation.
"Luna Eclipse used wolf powers!" Claire shouts. "That's against the rules! She should be disqualified!"
Cole intervenes immediately. "Miss Eclipse was defending herself and her partner from magical interference. Which is against the rules. Unlike defensive shifting, which is permitted when under attack."
He turns to Cassandra's Circle. "I felt five distinct magical signatures enhancing the sparring partner without consent. That's manipulation. That's dangerous. And that's a direct violation of Academy combat protocols."
"We were just trying to make the match more interesting," Cassandra says innocently.
"You were sabotaging another student. Again." Cole's voice is ice. "All five of you. Detention. One week. And I'm reporting this to the Headmaster."
They look furious. But they can't argue. Not when caught so blatantly.
As students file out after class, I overhear them.
"This isn't over," Claire is saying. "We need to escalate. Really expose her. Show everyone what she is."
"How?" another girl asks.
"By forcing her into a situation where she can't hide. Where she'll have to use full power. Full Eclipse magic. And when she does, we'll have proof that she's too dangerous to exist freely."
"What situation?"
"I'm working on it. But it involves exposing her to forces she cannot yet control. Making her choose between protecting others and protecting herself. She'll fail either way."
Cassandra joins in. "Just make sure it's documented. We need evidence the Council can't ignore. Evidence that proves binding her power is the only option."
They're planning something major. Something designed to trigger a catastrophic loss of control.
And I have no idea what it is or how to prepare for it.
After class, Cole pulls me aside.
"You handled that well. Defended yourself without escalating."
"They're not going to stop. They'll keep pushing until something breaks."
"I know. Which is why you need to be perfect. Give them nothing they can use against you."
"I'm trying. But it's exhausting. Being constantly on guard. Never able to relax."
"I know." His voice softens. "Luna, if I could make this easier for you, I would. But all I can do is support you. Train you. Help you stay sharp."
"It's enough. More than enough."
We're standing close. Too close. The awareness between us electric.
"I should go," I say. "Before someone sees us and adds inappropriate teacher-student relationship to my list of problems."
"There's nothing inappropriate happening."
"Not yet. But if we keep standing this close, looking at each other like this, there might be."
He steps back. Putting professional distance between us.
"You're right. I'm sorry. I'll be more careful."
"Don't apologize. Just... let's both be careful. Until circumstances change."
"Until circumstances change," he echoes.
I leave before I do something stupid. Like close that distance. Like finding out if he kisses as well as he fights.
But as I walk across campus, I can't shake the feeling that everything is building toward something.
The Circle's escalation. The Council's surveillance. The shadow caller's threats. My growing feelings for Cole.
All of it converging. Accelerating. Heading toward some inevitable confrontation.
And when it comes, I'll have to choose. What matters most. Who I trust. What I'm willing to sacrifice.
But for now, I just have to survive. One day at a time.
One threat at a time.
One impossible situation at a time.
Until I'm strong enough. Smart enough. Ready enough.
To face whatever comes next.
