Chapter 17 Craziness At Its Very Peak
Kate's POV
Murmurs floated around me—soft, broken, and distant.
I could hear people whispering in my head, but I had no idea what was happening or where I was.
Finally, I forced my eyes open, but the sharp lights above suddenly stabbed through them like needles.
I squinted for a second before I finally adjusted to the brightness of the light.
And for some minutes, everything seemed white—too white and blurry. I almost could have swore that I was dead and in heaven already.
I saw figures moving around in white lab coats and green hospital gowns. I also heard multiple voices whispering around me, but I still couldn't figure out where I was or what was going on.
When my eyes finally cleared, I saw rows of hospital beds, and I was on one of those beds. People were lying still on the bed while nurses and doctors attended to them. Others were sitting by the side of the hospital bed, next to random patients, I bet they're related to whoever was lying on the bed.
This was when it hit me—I was in a hospital.
I looked around again just to be sure, but everything still looked the same—a hospital hall with uncountable beds and patients lying on them.
I slowly turned around so I could grab the edge of the bed while I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain suddenly tore through my ribs. It was so sharp that I almost lost it and screamed so loud.
I groaned silently, clutching my side as if I was blessing the pain, but it only hurts more.
Tubes and wires were tugged at my skin, but I didn't care—I needed answers. I'm not supposed to be here, what the hell am I even doing in a hospital.
My heart pounded as I looked around again, panic slowly rising to its peak as the same questions roamed my head—why am I here? What happened?
Then the memories suddenly slammed back at once—it was raining, I was in Lina's car, there was a little girl standing in the middle of the road while we drove.
The screams from the incident suddenly filled my head, and I could barely think straight.
I could hear Lina screaming too, the wheel spinning, then the loud and unimaginable crash. I remembered everything clearly now.
My breath suddenly hitched.
It was an accident.
I was in an accident. Not just me, bit with Lina.
Then the thought hit me like a wave—Lina.
Where is Lina?
Did she even survive it?
I felt my heart stopped for a second
Without thinking twice, I immediately yanked at the wires connected to me. Maybe they were life support, but I didn't care. Lina isn't here. So where could she be?
I ignored all the pain and swung my legs out of the bed like I was being chased to do so.
“Lina,” I groaned in pain, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Lina please,” I whispered again, now scanning the room all over again, perhaps, I might find her on one of the beds, but nothing.
Panic started to crawl up my spine and I could feel it aiming for my head.
I grabbed the last wire on my chest and was just about to rip it off me, when Lina suddenly entered the room.
The moment she sighted me seated on the bed, she immediately rushed to my side like a toddler who had missed her mom.
“Oh my God, Kate—you’re awake!” Lina exclaimed, shock and relief blending together in her voice.
I froze.
Lina was standing just next to me, she was looking perfectly fine and untouched. Not even a single scratch was on her body. My stomach instantly dropped like a curse. What? How is she looking this okay? Looking so normal, and alive.
Maybe I'm going crazy for real.
I swear I think I'm crazy.
I stared at Lina in disbelief. She noticed my expression so she stepped closer to me, maybe to touch or hold me, but I immediately jolted back.
“What is this? Who are you?” I whispered slowly.
“What do you mean?” Lina responded casually, confusing me even more.
I blinked my eyes sharply as I took another full look at Lina, she indeed was looking fine and okay.
“Lina, what happened to you? Are you okay?” I stammered, my voice rough and words shaky, but overly demanding.
Lina rolled her eyes in confusion, “What do you mean, Kate?” She asked with an excited tone. She seemed not to know anything about my confusion.
But I can't just believe how things turned out this way.
Last night, Lina and I were in an accident and I saw it with my own eyes. Lina died! I swear I saw her bleed to death before I went unconscious, so what's happening now?
Lina blinked, then she laughed softly, “Come on, Kate. You're scaring me now. What are you even saying? I'm fine. I just came to check up on you. You were in an accident last night, remember?”
Of course, how could I ever forget? But what I can't even forget most is the fact that we were both involved in that accident, so cut the bull shit. If this is some sort of prank, then I swear it's not funny. This has to stop.
I stared at Lina for a while, still searching for some signs of stitches and bandages on her body, but nothing.
“What do you mean I was in an accident? We were in an accident!” I fired back, causing my rib to sting even more, but I didn't care.
“Oh please, Kate. Joking in such a serious situation, you're such a thing…” Lina laughed, now stepping closer to me again.
I couldn't contain my frustrations anymore.
I can't believe Lina really isn't remembering anything from last night.
What the hell is going on, oh God?
“The girl on the road—don’t you remember her?” I cried. “She caused it! We went off the ditch together! Last night! It was raining!” I suddenly screamed out the words, desperate for Lina to remember something—anything at least.
Lina’s eyes widened, but not in recognition—in confusion. “Kate, what are you talking about?”
This was when I realized it. Lina was truly confused, she's genuinely lost. This wasn't some prank shit. Now, I think one of us must be crazy, either I or Lina.
My mouth fell open. “What? You came to my house, you told me we had to leave, then we saw the girl—” I stopped to study Lina's expression, but her blank stare made my blood run cold. I can't believe she's not getting me still.
“I'll go call the doctor, Kate. I think you need help, okay?” Lina finally said, slowly backing away as if she was scared that I was losing my mind and I might go violent if care is not taken.
Lina looked worried. Totally worried for me, and I hated that I made her feel that way about me.
“I’m not crazy, Lina!” I shouted, but she was already stepping back, looking almost too terrified.
Lina didn't bother listening to me, she'd already started calling for the doctor's attention.
“Doctor!” she called, waving toward the hallway. “Something’s wrong with her—please, hurry!” she cried, still stepping away from me.
I can't believe this is happening to me.
Why would Lina ever think I'm going crazy?
For God's sake, I'm a certified therapist, I am a psychologist, so what the hell could ever go wrong with me?
I swear, I'm not crazy, I know what I'm saying. I swear, I do.
It was as if the doctors were waiting patiently for someone to call on them. They didn't hesitate, they immediately rushed to my side and the helping-nurses had already started to prepare sedatives so they could inject me with it, and then fall asleep.
The moment I sighted the injection filled with sedatives, I sprang up immediately, but the doctors carefully grabbed me back, now pressing my back down on the bed.
“ No! No! Lina, no please! Wait!” I begged. “Don’t leave me, please, Lina! You were there—you were there last night! Please don't let them keep me here, please I beg you!” I cried, but the injection was already going into my neck and I know it'll take effect in just a second.
“Please, don’t do this!” I screamed as they pressed me down—the sharp sting burned into my neck as my vision blurred, the room spinning into nothing.
“Lina…” I whispered, voice breaking.
Then everything slowly, but finally went black.
