Chapter 126
Chapter 126
Lucian's POV
Freya was delusional, of course, if she thought she could convince me to leave the side of good, to fight against my kind alongside people who wanted my total destruction and that of my people, then she was delusional. There was just no way.
"You've come to the wrong place," I said to her. "And all of these people whose heads you want—you could take their heads yourself if you wanted to."
She shrugged casually. "You're right, I could. But you've kept Paula away securely, helped Azazel escape, and as for Agnes, you have her kept securely within the pack. Besides, it will be much easier if I ask my old friend for a favour."
"And this is the deal the Rogue King wants to make with me? Their heads for... what, a seat at his table?"
She shrugged. "You best believe it. It's true."
"What would he want their heads for, Freya?"
I knew, of course, that this was all her doing. I doubted the Rogue King even knew she was here at this very moment.
"It's none of your business," she replied.
"Well, I think you need to see yourself out," I said to her. "I am not interested in any deals you have to make."
She laughed. "The fact that we are sitting in this place and not the palace tells me that you have lost a lot already, and there is still a lot more to lose."
"Why won't you just get out, Freya? Get out. I am being as courteous as I can right now. You bitch. You killed my brother. You killed my family, and now you expect me to... what? Join you in your wicked plots against werewolves?"
She stared blankly at me and then burst into laughter all of a sudden. When she was done laughing, she looked into my eyes coldly. "Oh, dear Lucian, what now? Do you expect me to cry you a river?"
That was it. I had had enough.
I lunged forward at her and wrapped my hands tightly across her neck. She began to choke, her face turning white and her eyes rolling backwards. I could feel the life force slip out of her body, and I choked her until her arms slumped onto the sofa.
When I let go, I put my finger underneath her nose. She was dead.
But I knew that was not the end. Freya was going to come back.
And right on cue, her body jerked awake suddenly, and she turned her head to look into my eyes. "See? I will always come back, Lucian."
I staggered backwards. Something was not right with this whole regenerative thing. Was it normal to be sent to death and then come back so quickly? What deal had she made? What had she traded to get such a power? I doubted even one soul could be enough to amass such great power.
Then something began to make sense in my head. Rogue werewolves had kept coming back, no matter how many of them we killed. And yet, whenever we did a cleanup of the pack, considering the number of casualties left behind, there were very few rogue bodies left behind. It appeared now as though they resurrected and came back. Was it the same way with Freya? Did they have some sort of power that allowed them to die, only to return to life later on?
A shudder ran down my spine. Maybe she was wrong about me joining their side, but she was certainly right about them being the winning side. If they could not die, how could they possibly lose?
"Do not look so frightened, Lucia0n. Don't worry. Unlike you, I have better control of my anger. I will not suddenly snap and try to break your neck, just like you have done mine."
I could only stare at her with an underlying sense of terror. What other powers did the Rogue King possess that would grant him victory in this war? It was no secret how our ancestors had fought the Cold Great War tooth and nail, barely managing to make it out alive. They had managed to push the dragons and the vampires into remission until their numbers remained very few—too few to return and hunt us. But now, the Rogue King had managed to fly under our radar, possibly collaborating with dragons and vampires to destroy us. The Great War was far from over. It was going to happen all over again. History was repeating itself, and this time, we werewolves might not emerge as the victors.
"On a more serious note," Freya began, "I came to warn you as your best friend."
I could only stare at her, unable to speak.
"Someone unexpected is going to betray you."
"You already did," I hissed under my breath.
She shrugged and smiled. "Well, too bad. But there will be more betrayals in your path. You need to be careful about who you trust."
And with that, she sauntered out of my presence, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
When she walked out, Edgar and Azariah entered the room. I found a chair to settle down in because I had begun to feel slightly dizzy from talking to Freya.
"What happened? Are we just letting her go?" Edgar asked, confused.
I looked at Edgar, the terror I had felt seeing Freya come back to life twice reflecting in my eyes. "She is... she is something completely evil, Edgar. I cannot describe it to you."
He looked at me with confusion.
"She came back to life, Edgar. They have some sort of magic that is beyond anything we've ever seen. And if they have the dragon-wolf, too..."
Azariah interjected, "The dragon-wolf? Is it true? Do they really have the dragon-wolf on their side?"
I shuddered, thinking about Samara and the necklace in my pocket. I needed answers, and I was not going to get them this way. I had to do something, even though I was not sure what.
"Alpha George was certain he spotted a dragon-wolf in his pack," I said, but it was all I could tell them for now. I could not tell them that I suspected Samara of being the dragon-wolf, and I sincerely hoped that George would not tell anyone else. If he did, the very second Samara returned or was spotted in our realm, she would be killed in rather gruesome ways—and it would not matter if we later found out we were wrong about her.
“Then we are doomed,” Azariah exclaimed, “we should send supplications to the moon goddess and hope for a place in paradise.”
“We cannot subject ourselves to such a gloomy fate,” Edgar said immediately, “dragon wolf or not, we shall fight till our last breath. We have always survived in the grimmest of conditions and we will…”
“A dragon wolf is no joke, Edgar,” the fear in Azariah’s eyes was palpable, “have you seen one before? The force of their breath can take out an entire pack.”
“So what?” Edgar cried, “we just give up?”
Before anyone could respond, loud knocks rapped on the door.
“Come back later,” I shouted but the voice on the other side made me freeze.
“Alpha Lucian!”
