Chapter 26 The Weight of the Locket

Chapter 26 The Weight of the Locket
The front door slammed so hard the whole house seemed to shake. I barely had time to take off my shoes before Liam was standing right in front of me. His chest rose and fell quickly, and his face was red with anger. He looked like he had been holding everything in for too long.

"A locket, Elena?" he hissed, his voice cracking under the weight of his fury. He stepped closer, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides. "You threw yourself into a pack of thugs for a piece of silver?"

“It’s his mother’s, Liam!” I shouted back, my hand trembling as I gripped the cold metal through my pocket. “He barely spoke in class today. He looked completely lost. I couldn’t just stand there and everything was because he follow us yesterday!”

Liam slammed his palm against the wall, the dull thud echoing through the hallway.
"Did you know what you don't use to admit you are wrong, fine it's because of us it lost his precious things but you should have let me know, then I will be glad to follow you? What if that siren didn't go on? You run into the fire without even checking if you’ll get burned. You act like you have nine lives, but you only have one!"

The tension between us was so heavy it felt hard to breathe. I opened my mouth to argue back, but a soft voice suddenly came from upstairs.

"That is enough, Liam."

Grandma stood at the top of the stairs, her hands resting calmly on the railing. She didn't look angry; she looked weary. She walked down slowly, her eyes moving from my flushed face to Liam’s shaking hands.

"I heard everything," she said softly, stepping between us. She placed a hand on Liam’s arm, her touch finally making his shoulders drop. "She was reckless, yes. But she did a kind thing. Forgive her. Her heart moved faster than her head."

Liam stared at the floor, his jaw tight. It took a long ten minutes of Grandma’s quiet reasoning, her murmuring about family and the weight of grief, before the fire in his eyes died down. He finally let out a long, ragged sigh and gave a stiff, reluctant nod. He didn't say he was happy about it, but when I asked to meet Daniel the next day, he didn't stop me. He just muttered a warning to stay in public places.

The next afternoon, I stood outside the restaurant, my thumb obsessively rubbing the digital face of my watch.

3:58 PM.

3:59 PM.

I kept my hands buried deep in my pockets, my fingers tracing the delicate links of the silver chain. Every time the restaurant door swung open, a gust of warm, savory air hit me, making my stomach flip. I had kept my message to Daniel short, giving no hint of why I was here.

A few moments later, Daniel finally came around the corner. His head was lowered, and his shoulders looked tense, like he was carrying too much on his mind. He looked tired, and the dark circles under his eyes were worse than before.

"Elena," he said as he reached me, his voice flat and hollow. "Why did you want us to meet? I'm not really up for much today."

"Just come inside," I said, catching his sleeve and tugging him into the warmth of the restaurant.

We slid into a small wooden booth near the window. Without a word, I reached into my pocket and pulled out the locket. I held it up by the chain, letting it sway gently.

The silver caught the overhead light,
Daniel’s breath hitched. He froze, his face turning a ghostly shade of white as he stared at the metal. His hand reached out, his fingers trembling so violently he couldn't even touch the silver. "You... you found it? How?"

"I told you I would," I said, my voice steady. "Now, turn around."

He hesitated, then slowly turned his back to me. I stood up, leaning over the table. The scent of his jacket, rain and woodsmoke, filled my nose as I reached around his neck. My fingers brushed the warm skin of his nape, and a visible shiver ran through him.

"Oh my god, look," a girl whispered loudly from the booth behind us. She nudged her friend, both of them leaning over to watch.
"That is so sweet! See? That’s real love."

"I know!" her friend chirped, not even trying to lower her voice. "She’s so lucky. I wish my boyfriend did stuff like that."

Heat flooded my face, a fierce blush spreading across my cheeks. I could see the tips of Daniel’s ears turning a bright, vivid red. I bit my lip, focusing on the tiny, stubborn clasp until I finally heard the faint click as it locked. I dropped back into my seat, trying to look anywhere but at the other customers.

Just then, the waiter appeared. He leaned against the table with a wide, knowing smirk, tapping his pen against his chin.
"Well, now," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "What can I get for our favorite young couple today? Maybe something on the house for the lovebirds?"

I stared at the table, my heart racing. I couldn't even find my voice. Daniel was gripped his menu so hard the paper began to crinkle.

"We... we aren't..." I stammered, trailing off into an embarrassed silence.

"I'll just have a water," Daniel managed to get out, his voice cracking mid-sentence.

"Make it two," I added, my eyes fixed on a stray napkin.

The waiter chuckled and walked away, shaking his head. Behind us, the girls continued to whisper and "wow" at the scene.

Daniel finally looked up. He reached beneath his collar, gripping the locket through his shirt as if to make sure it was real. The hollow, empty look was gone. A genuine, radiant smile broke across his face, lighting up his eyes for the first time in days.

"You did this for me," he said softly, the noise of the restaurant fading away. "Thank you, Elena. Truly."

I looked at him and smiled back, the embarrassment finally melting away. For the first time since everything started, the world felt like it was finally in balance.
