Chapter 179 Lilian Baker

Chapter 179 Lilian Baker

As if the universe had a special plan for me, night came faster than I imagined. And just like that, the movie night I planned with Lewis was a few minutes away.

Martha wasn't at home when I got back from school. And she wasn't there when I was leaving for Lewis's place.

I wondered if she was with Derek Walker again. I wondered if the neighbours already noticed the both of them together.

And Susan?

I didn't want to think about that yet.

The fact that she knew more than she let on literally sent chills down my spine.

Lewis already told me he left the front door open. So all I had to do was stroll in like another member of the household.

I was halfway to Lewis's room when I saw Andrew.

I stopped so suddenly that the strap of my bag slipped from my shoulder.

He was standing at the end of the hallway, one hand in his pocket, his expression unreadable.

For a second, neither of us said anything.

After everything that had happened between us, silence had become the easiest language we shared.

I adjusted my bag.

"Hi," I managed to let out.

He nodded.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Lewis's room."

His eyes moved briefly toward something behind me.

"Why?"

"Because we're supposed to have movie night."

He nodded slowly, as if that explained everything. Then he looked at me again.

"Come with me."

I blinked, completely astonished.

Come with him?

Just like that?

What gave him the impression that I would come with him?

Those were the questions ringing in my head but what came out of my mouth was completely different.

"Where?" I asked.

"I want to show you something," he answered calmly as if he didn't yell at me in the clinic that same day.

"What?" I asked instead.

"You'll see."

I would see?

I stared at him in disbelief.

I didn't understand what made him think I would just follow him because he asked me to.

"I'm supposed to meet Lewis," I said, trying all my possible best to remain calm.

"It won't take long," he said instead.

What did he want to show me?

My curiosity spiked higher than expected.

"How long?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Seriously?" I said, raising my eyebrows.

After everything that had happened today, not answering my question shouldn't even be on his to-do list.

"Five minutes," he finally answered.

I looked toward Lewis's room, then back at Andrew. There was something about his expression that made me hesitate.

I didn't know what he wanted, but maybe it was important.

"Fine,” I gave in.

He turned and started walking.

I followed.

"What are you showing me?"

"Nothing."

I stopped.

"Then why am I following you?"

He looked back at me.

"Because I asked you to."

I rolled my eyes.

"That isn't an explanation."

He said nothing and just like that, we continued walking.

When we got outside, I realized he was heading toward his car.

I stopped again.

"Wait."

He opened the passenger’s door.

"Get in."

"Andrew."

"Lily."

"I don't understand."

"Just get in."

"You said five minutes."

"I know."

"And now you're taking me somewhere."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"You'll know when we get there."

I wanted to argue but what was the point?

I sighed and got into the car. The moment he closed the door, I knew this wasn't going to take five minutes.

Andrew started the engine.

I looked at him and asked again, "Where are we going?"

He didn't answer.

I turned toward the window.

Fine.

If he wanted to play mysterious, he could, but my patience was already running thin.

I had promised Lewis I'd be there. We had planned the evening and now I was sitting in a car with his brother, who apparently thought explanations were optional.

The silence lasted several minutes and I finally couldn't take it anymore.

"Are you going to tell me where we're going?"

He kept his eyes on the road.

"No."

"Excuse me?"

"You'll find out."

"You're wasting my time."

"I'm aware."

"Then why are you doing it?"

He didn't answer.

I leaned back against the seat.

My irritation grew with every passing second.

I had spent enough time being confused by Andrew. Enough time trying to understand him. Enough time wondering why he pushed me away and then suddenly acted as if he couldn't stay away.

And now he had decided to take me somewhere without even telling me why.

"Can you at least tell me how long this will take?"

"Not long."

"That's what you said before."

He sighed.

"Lily."

"What?"

"Just trust me."

I laughed humorlessly.

"That's difficult when you won't tell me anything."

He glanced at me and I caught the look.

Something was bothering him. I could tell, but I was tired of being expected to understand things he refused to explain.

Eventually, the car slowed.

I looked outside.

We were nowhere near where I expected.

"Where are we?" I asked as he parked the car.

He didn't answer.

I looked around.

There wasn't anything particularly special about the place.

I turned toward him. "What exactly am I supposed to see?"

He didn't answer.

That was when I lost my patience.

"You know what? I should have stayed with Lewis."

Andrew looked at me and asked, " why are you upset?"

Why was I upset?

I almost laughed.

"You literally came to me, told me to follow you, refused to tell me where we were going, drove me away from the house, and now you're asking me why I was upset."

"I wanted to talk to you."

"Then talk!"

He went quiet again.

"What is it?"

"I don't know," he said before looking away.

That answer stunned me.

"You don't know?"

He shook his head.

"No."

I exhaled sharply.

"Then why did you bring me here?"

"I just..." He stopped.

I waited.

He didn't continue.

"Andrew, I have somewhere to be."

"I know."

"Then take me back."

Surprisingly, he didn't argue. He just nodded. Then he started the car again.

The ride back was even quieter.

This time, I didn't bother asking questions.

I looked out the window and tried not to think about anything, but my mind wouldn't cooperate.

Why did he do this?

Why did he keep pulling me close and then pushing me away?

Why did he confess his feelings and then tell me I should enjoy being with Lewis?

Why did he care so much about where I was?

And why did I still care about what he thought?

He already made his intentions clear but he was going against it himself.

I thought I knew where to stand but whenever he did confusing things like this, it made me question my own decision.

Was I really standing?

Or was I pretending to stand well on moving on with Lewis and the fake relationship?

I didn't know anyone.

But one thing was certain. Andrew was the author of my confusion and at this point, he didn't want me to be clear of the confusion.

He wanted me trapped in a state of dilemma. The same state he already placed himself, locked himself and threw the key away.
