Chapter 54 I Will Always Love You
Mia's POV
The hallway buzzed with students heading home, but to me, the world had quieted. For a second, it was just us, his hand in mine, my heart thudding louder than my footsteps, and the impossible beauty of what it felt like to be wanted by the one boy I thought I'd never have.
As we walked toward his car, Chloe stood near the lockers with two other girls, holding her script high, laughing just a little too loud.
"See you at rehearsal, Liam," she called, all sugar and poison.
I didn't look back. I didn't need to. Because Liam's hand tightened around mine like a promise.
"Where are you exactly taking me?" I asked.
"To one of my favorite places, I had a lot of places that I wanted to share with you." He said without answering me with direct answer.
"Well, I am sure it would be a beautiful place, but to be honest, I didn't care where as long as we are together even for a short moment, it would be enough to make
my day." I answered.
"I feel the same way too, but I want every moment with you to be special, I just want to make you happy." He said and my heart warmed.
"Liam, I am happy when I am with you, being your girlfriend made me the happiest girl on earth." I said making him smiled showing off his beautiful dimples.
"Wow..." I whispered, my breath catching in my throat. "This place is beautiful."
The words slipped from my lips before I could stop them as my gaze swept across the scene, rolling hills bathed in gold, the sun shimmering over the calm waters of Suncrest Lake, and the breeze gently rustling the trees around us. The hilltop felt like something out of a dream.
Liam dropped the picnic blanket over the grass with a smooth flick of his wrist, the fabric landing softly beneath a patch of dappled sunlight. Then he turned to look at me, eyes sparkling with something quiet and unreadable.
"This is my favorite place," he said, his voice barely above a murmur, like he wasn't just telling me, but confessing a secret.
I looked at him, my heart squeezing in my chest. "This is my favorite place now too," I said softly.
Liam's lips tugged into a smile, the kind that made me forget how to breathe.
He crouched down, placing the wicker basket carefully at the center of the blanket, and began pulling out its contents: two sandwiches wrapped in parchment, a small container of cut fruit, a chocolate bar I'd once mentioned liking, and a thermos that smelled like fresh brewed iced tea.
I blinked. "You... remembered."
"I pay attention," he said with a small shrug, though his cheeks turned slightly pink under the fading sun. "You mentioned chocolate that day you were doing your science homework and said you needed brain fuel."
I laughed, my heart tumbling in my chest. "I didn't think you were even listening."
"I always listen when it's you."
The words hung in the air, tender and charged. I looked away for a second, afraid my face would give too much away.
Because this wasn't just a sweet gesture.
It was Liam Alcaraz, the boy with guarded eyes and steady hands. The one who made me feel seen in a world that had too often looked past me.
I sat down beside him, letting the silence wrap around us like a soft blanket. Everything about this moment felt surreal. The way the sunlight caught in his hair. The way his hand brushed against mine when he passed me the napkin. The way his eyes lingered on me, not with expectation, but with awe. Like I was the view, not the lake.
I didn't mean to fall for him. But it was happening, slowly, irreversibly, like the way the sun slipped beneath the horizon.
And right now, in the middle of nowhere, with sandwiches and laughter and that one chocolate bar between us, I realized something:
I was falling for Liam harder than I ever meant to.
And maybe... I didn't want to stop.
The sun had dipped lower now, casting the lake in molten gold and painting the sky in soft hues of peach and rose.
We sat in silence for a while, listening to the wind, the rustle of the trees, and the occasional call of a distant bird. It wasn't awkward.
It was perfect.
Liam leaned back on one hand, watching the sky shift. His other hand moved toward my waist, hesitating just a second before gently wrapping around it. I tensed, not because I didn't want it, but because it felt too good. Too safe. Too much like everything I didn't know I'd been missing.
I let out a soft breath and leaned my head against his chest.
He didn't move. He just held me.
"You know..." he murmured after a few moments, voice low, like he wasn't sure if he should speak but couldn't hold it in anymore, "I didn't bring you here just because it's my favorite place."
I tilted my head slightly to look up at him. "No?"
He shook his head, his hand gently tightening around me. "I brought you here because... I wanted you to be part of it. I wanted this memory to have you in it."
My heart thudded hard.
"Mia," he said, looking down at me now. "I don't know how it happened, or when. But I fell in love with you."
My breath caught in my throat.
"I love you," he repeated softly, his eyes never leaving mine. "Not because you're kind. Not because you're strong. Not even because you make me laugh when I least expect it. I love you because when you're around, I finally feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."
I blinked, and for a moment, the tears welled up before I could stop them. Not from sadness, but from the overwhelming ache of being wanted. Of being loved the way I had secretly wished for.
"I love you too," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I've been trying not to. I told myself it wasn't the right time, that I wasn't ready, that maybe you'd never see me that way... but I do. I love you, Liam. So much that it scares me."
Liam’s eyes softened, and then he smiled in that way that always made my heart forget how to be careful. He reached for me gently and pulled me closer, slow and patient, until I was tucked perfectly against his chest. His arms wrapped around me like I had always belonged there. Then he lowered his chin and rested it lightly on the top of my head as we stared out at the lake together.
The water below us shimmered under the night sky, reflecting the first stars like scattered pieces of light. A cool breeze brushed my cheeks, but Liam’s warmth surrounded me so completely that I barely felt the cold. For a long time, neither of us spoke. We didn’t need to. The silence between us felt safe, not awkward. It felt like peace.
Because in that quiet hilltop, above the lake and beneath the rising stars, love had already spoken for us. Not through grand promises or dramatic words, but through the way he held me close, the way his heartbeat stayed steady against mine, the way he didn’t rush me, didn’t demand anything, just stayed.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt something I almost forgot I deserved.
I wasn’t just surviving. I was glowing.
Then Liam’s voice broke the silence, low and gentle, like he was speaking directly to my heart.
“Don’t be afraid, Mia,” he whispered. “I am here for you.”
My chest tightened, and my eyes stung, not because I was sad, but because I was overwhelmed. No one had ever said those words to me in a way that felt real, in a way that felt like a promise meant to last.
“I just want you to remember,” he continued softly, holding me a little closer, “whatever happens, I will always love you.”
My heart swelled so quickly it almost hurt. I closed my eyes and let myself breathe him in, let myself believe him, even if only for this moment.
Because right there, in his arms, with the lake shining below us and the stars rising above, I finally felt safe.
And I finally felt loved.
