Chapter 135 135
Chapter 135 135
EVA
I stared at her retreating figure, shivering from the cold sipping into my bones thanks to my wet hair dripping onto my shirt and trying to make a puddle with it.
Nico and Sage were the only two people I knew could protect this place, the only two Dante trusted. But now neither of them was in any condition to do anything and I can't leave him alone like that.
I rubbed my face with both hands and let out a long breath. This better be a short day, I just want to sleep in my bed, wake up to see everyone alive and going about their day.
I turned and walked back upstairs, needing to go home and get some clothes. I couldn't stay here in this borrowed shirt forever. Besides it was late already, I figured I can go get clothes and everything needed for the surgery, come back tonight, stay here, then go to the hospital in the morning for Lily's surgery.
I have to make it work. I didn't have a choice. Lily needed me and so does Dante. And I was the only one trying to hold both worlds together.
I walked into the bedroom and grabbed my phone and my bag and the few items I'd scattered around, then paused at the door and looked back at him.
His chest rose and fell in a slow rhythm, and he looked almost peaceful, like he was just sleeping. But I knew the damage underneath was more than what was on the surface. It was bound to happen anyway seeing how much blood he lost. If I lost that much there’s no way I’m going to survive it. I stood there for a moment, and felt a knot form in my throat.
I walked out and shut the door behind me, handing the key to the guard by the side.
I went downstairs and found the head maid in the hallway.
“Hey!” She turned around and rushed to me, confusion etching her features.
"Listen carefully," I said. "I know I'm not your superior or anyone at all ti boss you around, but this is very important to your boss. I'm going home to get some things but I'll be back by evening. While I'm gone, the bedroom stays locked. No one goes in. No one. If anyone from the family comes, and I mean anyone, you tell them Dante isn't here. You don't let them in. Don't let a soul near that door. Even if you have to throw them out. Understood?"
She slowly nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
I know how absurd I sound with such order. If I was her I know I'd certainly let curiosity get the best of me and ask why. Which would get me fired.
But if Dante trusted them enough to let them work for him, I can trust them too. I can trust them to follow my order even at the risk getting fired or threatened. Blair would rather go bald than stoop low to a servants level, her friend might take it upon themselves to teach the servant a lesson but she wouldn't get her manicure chipped because of people she go considered low and meaningless.
"And if anything happens—anything at all—you can call me immediately.” I stretched out my palm and she quickly took out her phone from her apron and placed it there. I quickly insert my number and saved it before handing the phone back. “I don't care what time it is. I don't care who it is. You call me, okay?"
"Yes, ma'am."
“And make sure Nicholas leaves the house before noon okay? Whatever excuse he gives, don't listen to him.”
“He's left already.”
I nodded. “Okay, that's good make sure he doesn't return. If he does, send him back.”
I thanked her and began booking a ride as I walked out. I hugged myself against the chill from the cold morning air and my wet hair and I waited for my ride to come. I booked a ride and waited, my phone clutched in my hand. Hoping the pain in my chest goes away.
I began walking to the gate when I saw that it was closer. when I reached, the car was there already. A nondescript sedan with a driver who barely glanced at me as I climbed in. I gave him my address and leaned back, closing my eyes.
Halfway through our ride, I noticed the driver glancing at the rearview mirror. He would look at me then glanced the rearview.
I looked at myself, making sure no part of clothes was torn. But I found nothing. Still he continued glancing at it, his hands gripping the steering wheel a little too hard.
I couldn't take it anymore.
"Are you okay? You keeping glancing at the mirror. We're on the road." I asked.
He hesitated, his eyes flicking to the mirror. "Not to alarm you ma'am, I've taken three turns now, and there's a car that's been keeping pace behind us. You expecting anyone to follow us?"
Expect who?
“No one.”
“Should I…should I call the cops.” He suddenly swerved, almost hitting a car.
My stomach dropped as I turned and looked out the back window. Truly as he said, there was a black sedan following us, staying so close, sometimes he almost bumped into eachother, never falling behind, like it was attached to us by some invisible string. Panic rose in my chest again settle back like lava.
What is going on?
I racked my brain but there was nothing there. I have absolutely no one who is crazy not to say whatever shit they wanted to my face but trail me instead.
My heart skipped a beat at the thought that immediately followed.
Are they…? Are they Dante's enemies?
I've read and seen my enough books and movies to know when one is being trailed. I have lived with and seen enough conspiracy theorist, so digging into these kind of things came naturally.
Countless times they've been trailed home, but it was more bad than good reason.
Was it Blair?
No, Blair wouldn't go out her way to play out a movie if all she wanted was to scare me they were many million other ways to.
My pulse rate rose higher and faster as the driver sped past a road accident that almost gave me a heart attack, as the car followed. It was glaringly obvious now what was going on.
Was it Elena?Jace? The last time I saw them was ages ago, Elena got her son back she can't just kill me out of spite, can she?
Jace just got back and he's been acting pretty nice and I've never even spoken to him. So why? Who?
He has even more reason to want to kill me. But wouldn't that make things harder for him?
He's made it obvious he wanted his father's blessings and property, a criminal record won't look good.
I tried to take a deep breath but it only made my lungs burn from the panic.
You never know how many enemies you have until you're in a situation that survival requires you to count them. How did I spend all my life on earth and the most things I've accomplished and gathered were enemies.
I quickly pulled out my phone and sent my location to Chloe and Mira, my fingers trembling as I typed.
Then I turned to the driver. "I don't think they're good people, so try to lose them."
He was even more focused on doing so I don't think he heard me.
