Chapter 48

Shayna sat in her New York apartment, staring at the wedding invitation from Charlene. She had been avoiding this decision for days, but deep down, she knew she couldn't keep running. With a deep breath, she decided to attend the wedding. The thought of seeing everyone again filled her with a mix of anxiety and anticipation, but she knew it was the right thing to do.

She booked a room at the local motel, wanting to have some space of her own, and planned to arrive a few days before the wedding. As she packed her bags, memories of the ranch and Dayton flooded her mind.

When she arrived in the small town, the familiar sights and sounds brought back a rush of emotions. Checking into the modest motel, she took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. After settling into her room, she picked up her phone and dialed Charlene’s number.

"Charlene, it's Shayna," she said when Charlene answered the phone. "I'm here, but I'm staying in town at the local motel."

"Shayna!" Charlene's voice was filled with joy. "I'm so glad you decided to come. We've missed you so much. Can you come over to the house? We could really use some help with the last-minute wedding preparations."

"Of course," Shayna replied, a small smile forming on her lips. "I'll be there soon."

Driving up to the Radisson ranch, Shayna’s heart pounded in her chest.

"It's so good to see you," Charlene said, stepping back and smiling at Shayna. "We have so much to do before the wedding. I hope you're ready for some serious shopping."

Shayna laughed, feeling her tension ease slightly. "I can handle shopping. Lead the way."

The next two days flew by in a whirlwind of activity. Shayna and Charlene visited flower shops, bakeries, and boutiques, checking off items from Charlene's extensive list.

The second afternoon, as they sat down for a quick lunch at a local café, Charlene reached across the table and squeezed Shayna's hand. "Thank you for coming. It means a lot to have you here."

Shayna smiled, feeling a genuine happiness she hadn't felt in a long time. "I'm glad I came too. It’s been nice to get out of the city and be here for you."

Charlene's eyes softened. "I know things have been complicated, but you're part of this family. We want you here."

Shayna nodded, her heart full. Despite everything, it felt good to be back and to be welcomed with open arms. But during this whirlwind of activity, she hadn’t laid eyes on Dayton at all. Shayna wondered if Dayton knew that she was here and perhaps purposefully avoiding her? Or was he genuinely busy?

The day before the wedding, the Radisson ranch house buzzed with excitement and activity. Martha, Charlene, Shayna, and some of Charlene's closest friends gathered in the living room, the atmosphere filled with laughter and joy. The room was decorated with fairy lights and pastel-colored streamers, creating a warm and festive ambiance.

Martha had gone all out to ensure that Charlene's hen party was perfect. A large table was set up with an array of finger foods, from mini sandwiches and quiches to an assortment of cheeses and fruits. A small bar in the corner offered a variety of cocktails, and a tiered tray held an impressive display of cupcakes that Shayna and Charlene had baked the afternoon before.

As the women settled into the comfortable chairs and sofas, Shayna handed out glasses of champagne, toasting to Charlene’s happiness. “To Charlene, the most beautiful bride-to-be! May your marriage be filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures.”

The group raised their glasses, cheers ringing out through the room. Charlene blushed and smiled, her eyes shining with happiness. “Thank you, everyone. This means so much to me.”

The evening unfolded with a series of fun games and activities. They started with a “How Well Do You Know the Bride?” quiz, where Charlene’s friends competed to see who knew the most obscure facts about her. Shayna, who had spent the most time with Charlene recently, managed to answer quite a few questions correctly, earning playful glares from the others.

Next, they played a game of “Bridal Pictionary,” where they had to draw wedding-related items while the others guessed. The room was filled with giggles and laughter as everyone tried to decipher the often hilarious drawings.

Martha, ever the hostess, brought out a surprise – a beautifully decorated cake with “Charlene’s Hen Party” written in elegant script. They all gathered around, singing and clapping as Charlene cut the first slice. The cake was a delicious masterpiece, and everyone enjoyed the sweet treat as they continued their celebrations.

As the night wore on, the conversation turned more sentimental. Charlene’s friends shared their favorite memories with her, recounting funny and touching stories from their past. Shayna listened, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for being included in this circle of love and friendship.

Martha, with her warm and motherly presence, took a moment to give a heartfelt speech. “Charlene, you’ve always been like a daughter to me. Seeing you so happy and surrounded by friends who love you fills my heart with joy. May your marriage be as wonderful as you are.”

Tears glistened in Charlene’s eyes as she hugged Martha. “Thank you, Martha. You’ve been like a mother to me. I’m so grateful for everything.”

Shayna, feeling the emotion in the room, decided it was time for her gift. She handed Charlene a small, beautifully wrapped box. “This is for you. I hope it brings you as much happiness as you’ve brought to my life.”

Charlene opened the box to reveal a delicate silver necklace with a small heart pendant. “Shayna, it’s beautiful! Thank you so much.” She hugged Shayna tightly, whispering, “I’m so glad you’re here.”

The night continued with more laughter, music, and dancing. They played Charlene’s favorite songs and danced around the living room, carefree and happy.

As the party wound down, they all gathered for a final toast. “To Charlene,” Martha said, raising her glass. “May your wedding day be the start of a beautiful new chapter in your life.”

“To Charlene!” they all echoed, clinking glasses one last time.

The hen party gradually wound down and the guests slowly began to leave, expressing their excitement for the upcoming wedding and hugging Charlene goodbye. Shayna stayed behind to help Martha and Charlene tidy up. The living room, once bustling with laughter and conversation, now felt calm and serene as they cleared away the remnants of the celebration.

"Thank you for staying to help, Shayna," Martha said with a warm smile. "It's been such a wonderful evening."

"Anything for Charlene," Shayna replied, returning the smile. "I'm glad I could be here."

After the living room was back in order, Shayna carried a tray of empty glasses to the kitchen. The door swung open silently, and she paused, surprised to find Dayton standing at the counter, staring out the window into the dark night.

Dayton turned as she entered, his eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, neither of them said a word. Shayna's heart ached at the sight of him. He looked so different from the confident, strong man she had come to know. He looked vulnerable, almost lost.

She placed the tray on the counter, the clinking of glasses the only sound breaking the silence. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but the words caught in her throat. What could she say that would bridge the gap between them? The hurt and confusion were still too raw.

Dayton continued to stare at her, his eyes reflecting a mix of pain and longing. He seemed on the verge of speaking, but instead, he simply sighed, the sound heavy with resignation. Shayna wished she could reach out and touch his hand. But she remained rooted to the spot, afraid that any movement might shatter the fragile moment.

Finally, Dayton tore his gaze away, looking down at the floor. "Goodnight, Shayna," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. Without waiting for a response, he walked past her, his footsteps echoing softly as he left the kitchen.

Shayna watched him go, her chest tightening with an overwhelming sense of loss. She wanted to call after him, to make him stay and talk, to clear the air between them. After a few moments, she shook her head and turned back to the task at hand. There were still dishes to wash and counters to wipe down.

When the kitchen was finally clean, Shayna stood by the sink, staring out into the darkness where Dayton had been looking. She felt a deep sadness settle over her, knowing that despite her best efforts, she had hurt someone she cared about. And the worst part was, she didn't know if she could ever make it right.

Shayna grabbed her jacket and quietly slipped out of the house. The night air was cool, and she took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Her van was parked just a few steps away, but as she reached it, she glanced up at the house. Her eyes were drawn to the window of Dayton's room. The light was still on.

Shayna walked around the side of the house, heading toward the entrance Dayton had used when he first brought her to the ranch. Her footsteps were silent on the soft ground, her heart pounding in her chest. She reached the door and hesitated for a moment, her hand hovering over the handle. What if he didn't want to see her? What if she only made things worse?

Pushing those thoughts aside, she took a deep breath and knocked softly. The seconds stretched into what felt like an eternity before she heard footsteps approaching. The door creaked open, and there he was, standing before her, his expression a mix of surprise and confusion.

"Shayna?" Dayton's eyes were wide as he looked at her.

Shayna met his gaze, her heart in her throat. "Dayton, I..." she began, but the words seemed to fail her.
