Chapter 247: Swept Away
A knock on Sharon's door shattered the comfortable silence that had settled between her and Mia. Her mother, eyes sparkling with mischief, nudged Sharon towards the door.
"Go on, sweetheart. It's probably Adrian," she teased.
Sharon's heart skipped a beat, hopeful to see him. Opening the door, she found herself face to face with a delivery man holding a sleek black box wrapped in shimmering silver ribbon.
Beside it, a bouquet of Adrian's selection of flowers, which filled the air with a sweet fragrance.
"Delivery for Ms. Sharon?" the man inquired, his smile friendly.
Sharon nodded, a blush creeping up her cheeks.
"Thank you," she said, accepting the package and the flowers with a shy smile.
Nestled in soft tissue paper, inside the box, laid a long stunning black dress, its fabric shimmering with a subtle sheen under the light.
"Wow," Sharon breathed, tracing the delicate lace neckline with trembling fingers.
Mia, standing just behind her, leaned in for a closer look.
"Oh, honey," she cooed. "That dress is gorgeous. It will look amazing on you."
Sharon's smile widened.
"There's a note," she said, noticing a small card tucked beneath the dress. Unfolding it, she read the single sentence: 'Tonight. Seven p.m.'
A delicious flutter filled her stomach.
"Adrian sent it," she said, a thrill shooting through her.
"Well, go get ready then," Mia urged, her eyes twinkling. "Don't keep the handsome man waiting."
Sharon spent the next hour in a whirlwind of activity. With Mia's help, she slipped into the dress, the cool silk caressing her skin.
Mia styled her hair in a simple yet elegant updo, and helped with her makeup.
"There you go," Mia declared with a satisfied smile, stepping back to admire her handiwork. "You look absolutely stunning."
Sharon caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and couldn't help but agree.
At precisely seven o'clock, the doorbell chimed. Mia winked at Sharon, a knowing glint in her eyes, before answering the door. A moment later, Adrian stood on the threshold.
"Hi," he said, his voice a husky murmur. He looked dazzling in a well tailored suit, his eyes lingering on Sharon for a beat too long.
"Hello, Adrian," Sharon replied, her cheeks flushing again. "The flowers are beautiful."
"They're nothing compared to you," Adrian countered, a genuine smile gracing his lips.
Mia beamed at both of them.
"Have a wonderful evening, you two."
The sleek town car ferried them through the city's twinkling lights to their venue.
"This place looks wonderful," Sharon said a few minutes later, as the car pulled up to a restaurant with a sparkling facade and a valet stand bustling with activity.
"I thought you might like it," Adrian replied, offering her a hand as they stepped out of the car.
The interior of the restaurant was even more stunning. Soft music filled the air, and the aroma of delicious food tantalized their senses. Adrian led her to a cozy table, the candlelight creating a warm and intimate ambiance.
Over a decadent meal of char-grilled tenderloin and buttery mashed potatoes, Sharon looked at Adrian with eager eyes.
"So how did you manage to find my mother after all these years?"
Adrian nodded and began explaining the process.
"Well, I took a photograph of the picture in your locket. Mike then took that photo and had it enlarged significantly with high resolution. He started his investigation in Galena, Illinois, since we know that's where you're from. In the background of the alley where the original picture was taken, there were some distinct landmark buildings visible. By analyzing the angle and position of those buildings, we were able to pinpoint the exact location of where that alley was."
Sharon looked at him in disbelief.
"Landmarks? In that blurry locket picture?"
"Exactly," Adrian chuckled. "With some clever image manipulation and a lot of squinting, Mike was able to pinpoint the exact location. We got lucky; the old landlord from back then was still around. It wasn't easy, everything was on paper back then, no fancy computer records. But after sifting through mountains of documents, he managed to track down some of the tenants who lived in that building the year you were born."
He took a deep breath, savoring the surprise blooming on Sharon's face.
"The old man had plenty of stories to tell, and Mike was able to get a list of young girls who were pregnant at that time. And guess what? Your mother's name was on it."
Sharon gasped, a hand flying to her mouth.
"Oh, wow," she whispered, overwhelmed by the sheer improbability of it all.
"Mike then set out to track down and meet with each woman to see if they were indeed your biological mother," Adrian continued. "Sadly, none of them admitted to leaving a baby at a church which matched what we knew of your origins. His search ended when he finally met your mother."
